Red Coral Identification Guide

How to identify Ramaria araiospora in coastal conifer forest: branch colour and tip colour, the fleshy base, brittle flesh, the pale ochre spore deposit, and how it separates from other red and pink corals on structure alone.

First Impression and Setting

Mossy, deeply shaded conifer forest on the western seaboard - hemlock and fir, thick duff, ferns, rain dripping off everything - some time from mid-autumn into early winter. Against that dark brown litter a red coral is startling: a shrub-like tuft of upright branches, 4-15 cm high and about as wide, in scarlet to crimson or vermilion, apparently glowing among the needles. The habit reads immediately as a coral fungus - repeatedly forked branches rising from a common base, no cap and no gills anywhere - and the colour narrows it drastically, because few corals are truly red.

Before touching it, note how it sits. Coral fungi in this genus arise from soil and duff, not from wood, and the fruit body is a single connected structure rather than a cluster of separate stems. If you can see clearly that it is growing from a rotting log or branch, you are probably in a different genus entirely.

Reading the Branch System

Take the whole structure in your hands and turn it. The architecture is the identification, so read it methodically from the bottom up.

At the base is a short, thick, more or less single stalk-like trunk, whitish to pale pinkish, usually partly buried in duff and often carrying adhering needles and moss. From it the fruit body divides quickly into a few main branches, and these divide again and again - typically three to six orders of branching - with each division producing two to four daughter branches. The branches are upright and roughly parallel, giving a dense, crowded, brush-like outline rather than an open airy one. Axils are rounded rather than sharply V-shaped.

Branch surfaces are smooth and matt; the spore-bearing surface in corals is simply the outside of the branches, so there is no gill, pore or tooth layer to look for. The tips are the detail to record carefully. In this species the tips are either the same red as the branches or, in a commonly encountered form, a clear yellow that contrasts against red branches. Note also that colour tends to be strongest in the upper branches and fades downward into pinkish, then whitish at the base - a gradient, not a uniform wash.

Flesh, Texture and Bruising

Snap a branch. The flesh is white, brittle and slightly fibrous - it breaks with a clean short fracture rather than tearing like rubber or squashing like jelly. It is not gelatinous, not hollow, and not tough. Fresh fruit bodies are firm and cool to the touch; over-mature ones become soft and the tips dull.

Bruising is generally slight in this species: handling may leave faint brownish or dull vinaceous marks, particularly near the base, but there is no dramatic instant colour change. Odour is mild and slightly earthy. Older material fades markedly, and a coral that has been through frost or a week of rain can lose so much red that colour alone is unreliable - which is why branch architecture and habitat matter.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

Corals do print, though people rarely bother. Because the spore-bearing surface faces every direction, the simplest method is to stand a whole fresh fruit body upright on white paper inside a covered container and leave it several hours to overnight; a fine deposit collects in a ring around the base. Alternatively, lay a branch on its side on paper.

The deposit is pale yellow to ochre-yellow or dull yellowish-buff - not white, not brown, not pink. That colour is a genus-level confirmation and separates the fruit body from the white-printing club and crown corals with which red species are sometimes lumped. Under the microscope the spores are narrowly ellipsoid to cylindrical, roughly 8-13 by 3-4.5 micrometres, and their surface is roughened with fine warts or short spines rather than smooth - visible at high power and diagnostic for the genus.

Substrate, Partners and Season

This is a mycorrhizal fungus, and the practical consequence is that it fruits from the forest floor in the presence of particular conifers rather than from decaying wood. In its core range it is strongly associated with western hemlock and related conifers of moist coastal forest, appearing in needle duff, in moss, on shaded banks and along the edges of old skid trails. Elevation and rainfall matter more than soil type; it likes cool, wet, heavily shaded stands.

The season is autumn into early winter, later than most of the mushroom flush, and it will keep fruiting until hard frost. Fruit bodies frequently appear in loose scattered groups over several square metres, and the same patches recur year after year, so a mapped site is worth returning to.

Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone

Other red corals in the same genus. Several relatives share the red colouring. The practical field characters are the size and shape of the base, overall stature and how the colour gradient runs. Species with a very large, massive, deeply buried base and thicker, more inflated lower branches sit apart from this comparatively slender, densely branched one; the ratio of base thickness to branch thickness is a more stable character than colour, which fades in all of them.

Pink-tipped corals. A common group has whitish to cream branches with pink, rose or purplish tips only - the body of the fungus is pale and the colour is restricted to the extremities. In this species the branches themselves are red and the tips may be red or yellow, so an overall pale coral with coloured points is a different species.

Orange and salmon corals with yellow tips. These are usually larger and more massive, with pinkish-orange or salmon rather than scarlet branches, thick lower trunks and a habitat association with broadleaf woodland in many regions. Judge on hue, bulk and forest type together.

Crown-tipped corals on wood. Look at the tips with a lens: if each branch ends in a small crown or cup with a ring of tiny points, and if the fruit body is attached to a fallen log or buried branch, it belongs to a different genus. These are also whitish to tan, not red.

Club and spindle corals. Bright red and orange members of this group exist, but they are unbranched or sparsely forked clubs growing in troops of separate stems from moss and grass, with waxy or brittle flesh and a white spore deposit. The absence of a common branched trunk is the giveaway.

Jelly-textured corals. Some superficially coral-like fungi are gelatinous and rubbery, translucent when wet, and rebound when squeezed rather than snapping. Texture alone separates them.
