Red-mouth Bolete Identification Guide

The Setting And The First Impression

You will almost always meet this bolete in eastern North American hardwood or mixed forest, on a humid day in mid to late summer when the leaf litter is still damp from a thunderstorm. Oak is the tree to look up for, though beech, birch and eastern hemlock all support it. It is a ground-dwelling mushroom, pushing up through litter along trail edges, on shaded slopes and in the grassy fringe of woodland paths, sometimes singly and sometimes in loose scattered troops.

The first impression is of a solid, dry-looking brown bolete with something dark and vaguely bruised about the underside. From standing height the cap reads as plain tawny to reddish-brown and the mushroom looks unremarkable. Crouch down, tilt the cap toward the light, and the character appears: the pore mouths are deep orange-red to almost blood-red, and the stalk beneath them is peppered with fine red dots on a yellow ground. That combination of a matte brown cap over a red-mouthed underside is the whole identification in miniature.

Reading The Cap

The cap runs roughly 5 to 15 cm across. Young caps are strongly convex, almost hemispherical, with the margin curled tightly under; with age they flatten to broadly convex or nearly plane, and the margin may become wavy or slightly upturned in older specimens.

Surface texture is the first thing to test. Run a thumb across the top: it should feel dry and finely velvety, like short suede, at least in young fruit bodies. This subtle velvet is what the epithet refers to. In wet weather the surface can become slightly tacky, and in old age it wears smooth and can crack shallowly, so weigh texture most heavily on fresh caps.

Colour is variable and should not be leaned on alone. Expect yellow-brown, cinnamon-brown, reddish-brown or a dull olive-brown, often darker over the disc and paler toward the margin. Some collections show faint reddish flushes near the edge. Where an insect or slug has grazed the cuticle away, the exposed flesh beneath will already be discoloured blue.

The Pore Surface

Turn the cap over. The tube layer is 1 to 2 cm deep, and the tubes themselves are yellow to olive-yellow when sliced through, but the mouths — the visible openings at the surface — are dark orange-red to brick or blood-red. In very young buttons the pore surface can appear almost uniformly dark red; as the mushroom expands, a yellow zone often develops right at the cap margin, so you may see a narrow yellow rim around a red field.

The pores are small and round, roughly 2 to 3 per millimetre, and the surface is depressed around the stalk in mature specimens. Press a fingertip into the pores and hold for a second. The response is immediate and dramatic: the touched area turns dark blue to blue-black almost as fast as you can lift your finger away. That instantaneous reaction, rather than a slow drift toward blue over a minute, is a useful timing detail.

The Stipe And Base

The stalk is 5 to 12 cm long and 1 to 3 cm thick, more or less equal or slightly swollen below, sometimes tapering to a pointed base where it enters the litter. The ground colour is yellow at the apex, grading to red, orange-red or brownish-red over the lower two thirds.

Look closely with a hand lens. The surface is covered in fine granular dots, points or short fibrils — never a raised net. The absence of reticulation is important and easy to check: a net would appear as continuous ridges forming a mesh, whereas here you see isolated punctae, like fine stippling.

Then dig. Lift the whole mushroom out of the soil rather than snapping the stalk, and clean the base. In this species the extreme base is typically clothed in coarse dark reddish-brown to blackish-brown hairs or matted tomentum, sometimes with rusty mycelial threads binding litter to it. That dark furry base is one of the most reliable single characters, and it is destroyed if you cut the stalk off at ground level, so always excavate.

Flesh And The Colour Change

Slice the mushroom vertically from cap centre to stalk base with a clean knife. The unchanged flesh is pale yellow in the cap, deeper yellow in the stalk, often with reddish tints in the stalk base. The moment air reaches the cut face, the flesh flushes intense dark blue. In fresh specimens the change sweeps across the exposed surface in one to three seconds, so quickly that it is easy to miss the original yellow if you look away.

Over ten or fifteen minutes the blue usually fades to a dull blue-grey or dirty greenish tone. Photograph the cut face immediately if you are documenting a collection, because the initial colour is the diagnostic one. Odour is mild and not distinctive.

Taking A Spore Print

Cut a cap free with a short stub of stalk and lay it pore-side down on white paper or foil. Cover it with a bowl or upturned cup to hold humidity and leave it three to six hours, ideally overnight. The deposit is olive-brown to olive-ochre, the standard bolete colour, and it confirms family placement rather than species. Collect the print from a mature but not decaying cap; overripe boletes drop a smeared, waterlogged deposit.

Substrate, Season And Ecology

This is a mycorrhizal species. It forms sheathing root associations with living trees, so it fruits from soil, never from wood, and never from dung or wood chips. Any red-pored bolete apparently growing on a log is worth re-examining — it is probably rooted in buried debris or is a different organism entirely.

The season runs from early summer through early autumn across eastern North America, peaking in July and August in the northeast. Fruiting is strongly rain-driven, with flushes appearing five to ten days after heavy summer storms.

Separating It From Look-alikes On Morphology

Boletes with a netted stalk. Several red-pored boletes have a raised reticulum over the upper stalk. If you see a mesh rather than dots, you are elsewhere; the Red-mouth Bolete is stippled, not netted.

Frost's Bolete. That species has a sticky, glossy, deep blood-red cap rather than a dry velvety brown one, a coarsely and conspicuously netted red stalk, and young pores that weep amber droplets. Cap texture alone separates them.

Species with a pallid or yellow base. Several close relatives share the velvety brown cap, red pores and instant blueing, but lack the dark red-brown basal hairs. Excavating the base and checking for that dense dark tomentum is the practical field separation.

Bicolor-group boletes. These have a rosy-red to brick cap and yellow pores, not red pore mouths, and they blue more slowly and less intensely.

Ganoderma and other brackets are irrelevant here; if the mushroom is attached to wood by one side rather than standing on a central stalk in soil, the whole group is wrong.

A Quick Field Sequence

  1. Ground-dwelling bolete under hardwoods, dry velvety brown cap.
