Red Pinwheel Marasmius Identification Guide

How to find and confirm Marasmius pulcherripes, the pink-red pinwheel mushroom with deeply pleated caps and hair-thin black stalks that grow straight out of fallen leaves and conifer needles. Covers hand-lens technique and separation from the other Marasmius pinwheels.

Getting Your Eye In

This is a mushroom you find by kneeling. The whole fruit body would sit comfortably on a fingernail, and the first time most people see it is by accident — a flick of rose-pink against brown leaf litter, noticed while photographing something larger. Once you have seen one, you usually see twenty, because the species fruits gregariously across a patch of litter.

The habitat is deciduous or mixed woodland in eastern North America, and also across eastern Asia, in the warm damp weeks of summer through early autumn. Look in shaded, humid pockets: the leaf mat under maples and oaks, drifts of pine or hemlock needles, the damp side of a ravine, the litter under a rhododendron thicket. A few days after warm rain is ideal, because the caps rehydrate and expand only when wet and shrivel to almost nothing in dry spells.

The first impression, once you are down at litter level, is of tiny bright parachutes hovering on invisible threads. The cap colour is a clear pink to rose-red or purplish-red, the stalk is so thin and dark that it disappears against the litter, and the effect is of colour floating above the ground.

Reading The Cap

Caps measure only 3 to 12 mm across. The shape starts as a small hemisphere or bell and expands to convex or nearly flat, and there is very often a tiny raised nipple or papilla at the centre.

The critical feature is the pleating. The whole cap surface is deeply grooved with radial furrows that run from the margin toward the disc, following the lines of the gills beneath. Under a hand lens the cap looks like a folded paper parasol or the ribs of a miniature umbrella. The margin is scalloped where those pleats end.

Colour is bright and fairly consistent: rose-pink, pinkish-red, magenta or purplish-red, usually slightly darker at the papilla and fading toward the margin. Old or sun-bleached caps wash out toward pale pink or buff, so judge colour on fresh material found in shade. The surface is dry and matte, never sticky.

Reading The Gills

Turn a cap over with the point of a knife or the tip of a finger and use a lens. The gills are the opposite of crowded — expect roughly 10 to 16 gills reaching the stalk, widely spaced, with a few shorter gills between them. They are whitish to pale pink, sometimes with a faint pinkish flush picked up from the cap.

Now check the attachment, because this is the character that splits the pinwheels apart. In this species the gills run in and attach directly to the top of the stalk (or are narrowly notched against it). They do not end on a free-standing collar. Look specifically for a small ring of tissue, called a collarium, encircling the stalk apex with the gills fastened to it and a visible gap between that ring and the stalk itself. Its absence here is diagnostic.

The Stalk And Its Attachment Point

The stalk is 2 to 6 cm long but only about 0.2 to 0.5 mm thick — hair-fine, wiry, and stiff enough to hold the cap upright. It is smooth, shining, and horn-like in texture, pale reddish or brownish at the very apex and grading to dark reddish-brown, blackish-brown or black over most of its length.

The base is worth as much attention as the cap. Trace the stalk down with a lens to where it meets the leaf or needle. In this species the stalk is inserted directly into the substrate with no basal disc, no pad of downy mycelium and no fuzzy cushion at the point of attachment — a condition described as insititious. Gently tug one free: it pulls away cleanly, leaving a bare pinprick rather than a tuft of hairs.

Flesh And Colour Change

There is barely any flesh to speak of. The cap tissue is membranous, less than a millimetre thick, and the stalk is solid and cartilaginous. Nothing bruises, nothing bleeds, and there is no latex. Cutting produces no colour change at all, which is itself informative: any small pink mushroom that oozes milk or stains on handling belongs to another genus.

A behavioural trait is worth testing on a collection you take home. Marasmius fruit bodies are famous for reviving. Let a cap dry until it is shrivelled and papery, then wet it, and within an hour it will re-expand to something close to its original shape and colour. Very few small litter mushrooms outside this group do that.

Taking A Spore Print

Getting a print from a cap this small takes patience. Cut several caps with a short stub of stalk, arrange five or six of them gill-side down in a tight cluster on a glass microscope slide or a piece of black and white paper, and cover the lot with a small cup to keep the humidity up. Leave overnight. The individual deposits are faint, but a cluster of caps produces a legible smear.

The print is white. Confirming a white deposit removes a whole set of pink-capped candidates with brown or rusty spores, and combined with the pleated cap and wiry black stalk it seals the genus.

Substrate, Season And Ecology

This is a litter decomposer. It grows on the fallen material itself rather than in soil: individual caps arise from a single dead leaf, a fallen conifer needle, a fragment of petiole or a small twig. If you lift the fruiting patch you will often find fine dark mycelial threads knitting the litter fragments together. It plays a part in the slow breakdown of the surface litter layer, working on material that coarser decomposers leave behind.

Fruiting runs through summer and into early autumn, keyed tightly to rainfall. Populations appear within a couple of days of a soaking and vanish just as fast.

Separating It From Look-alikes On Morphology

Orange Pinwheel (Marasmius siccus). The nearest confusion. It shares the pleated cap, wiry dark stalk and insititious attachment, but the cap is orange, rusty-orange or tawny rather than pink to rose-red, and it usually runs a little larger. Judge colour on fresh caps in shade, since faded material of either species drifts toward buff.

Marasmius fulvoferrugineus. Similar habit, but the cap is a deeper rusty to reddish-brown and larger, and it lacks the clean pink tone.

Pinwheel Marasmius (Marasmius rotula). Easy to exclude on two characters: the cap is white to pale cream, not pink, and the gills are attached to a free collar encircling the stalk. Check the collarium with a lens and the question is answered.

Mycena species. Many small pink Mycenas grow in litter, but their caps are conic to bell-shaped and merely striate rather than deeply pleated, the stalks are fragile and often mycelioid or hairy at the base, and the flesh is watery rather than tough.

Marasmiellus and Gymnopus species tend to have paler, non-pleated caps, thicker and often downy stalk bases, and more crowded gills.

A Quick Field Sequence

  1. Tiny mushroom on leaf or needle litter, gregarious, after warm rain.
  2. Cap 3 to 12 mm, rose-pink to purplish-red, deeply pleated, often with a central nipple.
  3. Gills few and distant, whitish, attached to the stalk apex — no collar.
  4. Stalk hair-thin, shining, black-brown, inserted directly into the leaf with no basal pad.

Common questions

How do I tell this apart from the Orange Pinwheel?
Colour and size. Both share pleated caps, wiry dark stalks and stalks inserted straight into litter, but Marasmius pulcherripes is pink, rose-red or purplish-red and usually smaller, while Marasmius siccus is orange to rusty-tawny. Assess fresh caps found in shade, because sun-faded specimens of both drift toward pale buff.
