Red-tinged Lepiota Identification Guide

A practical guide to recognising Leucoagaricus rubrotinctus by its radially streaked reddish cap, free white gills, movable ring and white spore print, with the structural checks that separate it from other white-gilled woodland mushrooms.

Where You Meet It

The Red-tinged Lepiota is a mushroom of disturbed, litter-rich ground rather than deep wilderness. Typical settings are the leaf-mulched border of a suburban garden, a woodchip bed around ornamental shrubs, a path edge in mixed hardwood forest, the base of a hedge, or the humus-heavy margin where a lawn meets trees. It appears singly, in small scattered groups, or occasionally in loose arcs, from summer into autumn wherever warm weather follows rain.

The first impression is of a clean, slender, well-proportioned mushroom with a striking two-tone cap: a dark reddish or reddish-brown centre from which colour streams outward in fine radial streaks over a white to cream background. From above it can look as though someone brushed red pigment onto a white cap and dragged the brush toward the edge. The stature is elegant — a slim stalk, a flaring cap, and a ring that sits like a loose collar partway down.

Reading The Cap

Caps run 3 to 9 cm across. They begin as small ovoid to bell-shaped buttons in which the reddish cuticle covers the entire surface. As the cap expands, that continuous coloured skin is stretched and torn: it stays intact over the disc but splits into fine appressed radial fibrils and small scales outward, exposing the pale flesh between them. The mature outline is broadly convex to plane, very often with a low broad umbo, and the margin may be finely striate or slightly split in old specimens.

Colour of the disc is the character in the name — brick-red, reddish-brown, coppery or pinkish-red, sometimes browner in age or after sun exposure. The background is white, cream or faintly pinkish. The surface is dry and silky, never viscid, and the fibrils lie flat rather than standing up as shaggy scales.

Reading The Gills

Turn the cap over. The gills are white to cream, and if you look at a cross-section the important structural point is visible: they are free, ending in a clean gap around the stalk rather than running onto it. Slice the mushroom vertically and you should see a narrow moat of space between the gill edges and the stalk apex.

They are crowded, moderately broad, with even edges and numerous short gills interleaved between the full-length ones. In age they may develop a faint cream or pinkish-buff tone but they never go pink-brown like a field mushroom or grey-black like an inky cap. Handling does not stain them.

The Stalk, Ring And Base

The stalk is 4 to 12 cm long and 4 to 10 mm thick, slender, smooth and dry, white to pale cream and often flushed pinkish or brownish toward the base with handling and age. It is hollow — snap one and you will find a clean central cavity — and it enlarges gradually downward into a small basal bulb, rounded rather than abruptly rimmed.

The ring is a key structure. It is membranous, white, thin, often with a faintly brownish or reddish edge picked up from the cap cuticle, and it is typically movable: nudge it with a fingertip and it slides up and down the stalk. Its presence high or mid-stalk on a smooth white shaft is one half of the identification.

The other half is what is not there. Excavate the base carefully, brushing soil away rather than pulling. There is no sac, no cup, no rim of tissue and no ring of warts at the base — the bulb is bare. That single check removes an entire group of similar-looking white-gilled mushrooms whose universal veil leaves a volva.

Flesh And Colour Change

Cut the mushroom lengthwise. The flesh is white, thin over the gills, soft and slightly fibrous in the stalk. Watch the cut surface for a full minute. In this species there is little to no colour change: at most a slow, faint pinkish or brownish discolouration in the stalk base or in insect-tunnelled areas. There should be no rapid flush of saffron-orange, no strong red-brown staining of the whole flesh, and no bright yellow reaction.

Odour is mild, sometimes faintly sweet or slightly rubbery, and is not a decisive character.

Taking A Spore Print

Cut the cap free at the top of the stalk and set it gill-side down on a sheet of black paper, or half on black and half on white so a faint deposit shows up either way. Cover with a bowl and leave four to twelve hours. The deposit is white, occasionally reading as the very faintest cream.

Do not skip this. A white print separates this mushroom from the large green-spored lookalike that shares the pattern of a scaly cap, free gills and a ring, and from brown- and pink-spored mushrooms of similar stature. Judge print colour against a white background as well as black, because a heavy white deposit can look grey on black paper.

Substrate, Season And Ecology

This species is a saprotroph, living on dead plant material in the soil and litter layer. It fruits from rich humus, leaf mould, garden beds, compost-enriched soil and woodchip mulch, and it responds strongly to disturbance — new mulch and freshly turned beds often produce a flush the following season. It is not attached to a particular tree species and forms no root partnership, so the trees around it are context rather than evidence.

Timing runs from early summer through autumn, extending later in mild climates, and fruiting follows warm rain by a few days. Fruit bodies are short-lived and collapse quickly in heat.

Separating It From Look-alikes On Morphology

Green-spored Parasol (Chlorophyllum molybdites). The most consequential separation. That species is much larger and stouter, usually 8 to 25 cm across, grows in open grass in arcs and rings rather than in litter, has coarse pale scales rather than fine red radial fibrils, and drops a greyish-green spore print. Gills often age dull green. If a print is not yet available, size, habit and habitat usually settle it, but the print is the definitive check.

Reddening Lepiota (Leucoagaricus americanus). Shares white free gills, a ring and a white print, but the stalk is characteristically swollen in the middle and tapered at both ends, the mushroom grows on woodchips and sawdust piles, and — the deciding character — cut or handled flesh reddens conspicuously, eventually turning brownish-red. The Red-tinged Lepiota does not do this.

Shaggy Parasol group (Chlorophyllum rhacodes and allies). Much bulkier, with a thick stalk, an abruptly bulbous base, coarse upturned brown scales rather than appressed red fibrils, and strongly reddening flesh.

Amanita species. Also white-gilled with a ring, but the base tells the truth: Amanitas carry either a saccate volva, a rimmed bulb, or a zone of warts, and their caps bear patch-like universal veil remnants rather than radially streaked fibrils. Always excavate the base.

Other small Lepiota species. Numerous small brown-scaled Lepiota lookalikes exist, but they are generally smaller, browner and lack the clean bright red disc with radiating red streaks over a white ground.

A Quick Field Sequence

  1. Slender mushroom in mulch, garden litter or woodland path edge.
  2. Cap with a red to reddish-brown disc breaking into fine radial red fibrils on white.
  3. Gills free, white, crowded; no staining on handling.
  4. Smooth hollow white stalk with a movable membranous ring and a bare, non-rimmed basal bulb — no volva.
