Overview

The Redlead Roundhead (Leratiomyces ceres, formerly Stropharia aurantiaca) is the most colourful of the mulch-bed fungi, its brilliant scarlet to brick-orange caps standing out sharply against dark woodchip. The English name compares the colour to red lead, the old orange-red pigment; in North America the same fungus is often called Chip Cherries for the way young rounded caps dot a fresh mulch bed like scattered fruit.

The species belongs to the Strophariaceae and was moved out of Stropharia into Leratiomyces, a genus that groups several species with a similar viscid cap, purple-brown spores and a poorly developed or fugitive ring. Along with Stropharia rugosoannulata and various Agrocybe and Psathyrella species, it forms part of the distinctive fungal community that has expanded enormously with the modern landscaping habit of surfacing beds and paths with bark and woodchip.

Leratiomyces ceres is thought to be originally Australasian and has spread widely with the international trade in wood mulch and nursery stock. It is now a familiar sight in gardens, parks, car park plantings and municipal landscaping across Europe, North America and beyond.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 2–8 cm across, at first hemispherical or convex and expanding to broadly convex or almost flat, sometimes retaining a low umbo. The colour is intense — scarlet, brick-red or orange-red, usually darkest at the centre and fading to orange or yellow-orange toward the rim, and paling with age and sun exposure to a duller brick or tawny tone. The surface is smooth and distinctly viscid or sticky when moist, drying shiny. Young caps often carry small whitish veil flecks along the margin, which are soon lost.

Gills

The gills are adnate to slightly adnexed, moderately crowded, and change colour markedly with age. They are pale cream to yellowish-grey when young, then dull purplish-grey, and finally dark purple-brown to almost blackish with mottling. The gill edges typically remain whitish and finely fringed, giving a distinct pale margin against the darkening faces.

Stipe

The stipe is 3–10 cm long and 3–10 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly thickened toward the base, white to cream above and often flushed yellowish, ochre or rusty-orange toward the base. It is dry and covered in fine white fibrils or small scales in the lower part. A true persistent ring is usually absent; instead there is a faint fibrillose ring zone, often darkened by trapped spores, which can vanish entirely in mature specimens. White mycelial cords typically bind the base into the woodchip.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is whitish to pale yellowish in the cap and more ochre in the stem base, and does not change colour appreciably when cut. The spore print is dark purple-brown. Under a lens the gill edge cells are conspicuous and pale, contributing to the fringed appearance.

Where and when it grows

This is above all a fungus of woodchip and bark mulch. It fruits abundantly on landscaped beds, garden borders, park plantings, playground surfacing, mulched paths and any place where chipped wood has been spread and allowed to sit for a season or two. It also appears on sawdust piles, wood-waste heaps and occasionally on very rotten wood or bare disturbed ground enriched with wood fragments.

Fruiting typically runs from summer through to late autumn, and can continue into mild winters in urban settings where the mulch retains warmth. Fruit bodies emerge scattered, in troops or in loose clusters, sometimes carpeting a bed in the year or two after fresh chip is laid, then declining as the resource is exhausted. Originally described from Australasia, the species has been carried worldwide with mulch and horticultural material and is now well established across temperate Europe, North America and elsewhere.

Ecological role

Leratiomyces ceres is a saprotroph specialising in fresh lignin-rich wood fragments. It causes a white rot, breaking down both lignin and cellulose in the chip and turning it progressively softer, paler and more crumbly. Its mycelium is a vigorous early coloniser of newly laid mulch, forming visible white cords and mats through the upper chip layer.

Because it thrives on a habitat created and continually renewed by human landscaping, it behaves as a classic anthropogenic species: populations rise and fall with mulching cycles rather than with any natural forest process. Spread is largely by the movement of colonised chip and nursery stock rather than by long-distance spore dispersal, which explains the species' rapid global expansion over recent decades.

Similar species

Stropharia rugosoannulata, the Wine Cap, shares mulch beds but is much larger and stouter, with a wine-red to greyish-brown cap, a thick persistent ring with a distinctive cogwheel or radially grooved underside, and greyer-purple gills. Leratiomyces squamosus var. thraustus also has an orange to tawny cap but differs in its markedly scaly stem below a more definite ring, and it grows in leaf litter and woodland rather than mulch.

Hypholoma species such as the Brick Cap and Sulphur Tuft can look superficially similar in colour but grow in dense clusters on stumps and logs rather than on chip, have olive-yellow to greenish young gills, and lack any ring zone. Gymnopilus species are also orange-tawny but have dry, fibrillose to scaly caps and, decisively, a bright rusty-orange spore print instead of purple-brown. Checking the spore print colour and the woodchip substrate separates the Redlead Roundhead from nearly all of these.

Why does it appear so suddenly in garden beds?
Its mycelium is a vigorous early coloniser of freshly laid woodchip and bark mulch. Once a bed is surfaced, the fungus can carpet it with fruit bodies in the following year or two, then fade away as the chip breaks down and the resource is used up.
