Rooting Polypore
Polyporus radicatus

A tall stalked polypore that appears to grow from bare ground, its blackish scurfy stem tapering into a long root-like extension that reaches buried hardwood below.
Overview
The Rooting Polypore is one of the most distinctive of the stalked polypores because of the long tapering pseudorrhiza, or false root, that extends from the base of its stem deep into the soil. Above ground it presents as a tall, slender-stalked, yellow-brown-capped mushroom standing in leaf litter, and only excavation reveals that the stem continues downward for many centimetres to buried roots or a decaying stump.
It belongs to the family Polyporaceae and to the traditional core of Polyporus, sharing with its relatives a tough pliant texture, white flesh, and a layer of small pale pores running down the stipe. Where most stalked polypores sit visibly on a log, this species exploits below-ground wood, and its rooting habit is the adaptation that lets it reach the surface from a buried substrate.
It is a relatively uncommon fungus, most often recorded in eastern North America and reported patchily elsewhere in the north temperate zone, and it tends to be found singly or in small scattered groups in mature deciduous woodland.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5 to 15 cm across, at first convex, then flattening and finally becoming shallowly depressed to broadly funnel-shaped. The colour is yellow-brown, olive-brown or dingy ochre, sometimes greyer with age, and the surface is dry and characteristically scurfy, minutely roughened or granular-scaly rather than smooth. The margin is thin, often incurved when young and becoming wavy and sometimes split later.
Pores
The pore surface is white to cream, ageing pale buff or slightly yellowish. Pores are small and round to slightly angular, roughly 2 to 4 per millimetre, and are decurrent, extending down the top of the stipe. Tubes are shallow, generally 1 to 4 mm deep.
Stipe
The stipe is the key feature. Above ground it is 5 to 15 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, pale buff to brownish near the apex and becoming dark brown to blackish and conspicuously scurfy or scaly toward the base. Below ground it continues as a long, tapering, blackish rooting extension that may run 10 cm or more through the soil to reach buried wood.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white, firm and tough, drying hard, and does not change colour when cut. The spore deposit is white.
Where and when it grows
Fruit bodies emerge from soil and leaf litter in deciduous and mixed woodland, always connected below by the rooting stipe base to buried hardwood, typically dead roots, root collars, or the remains of an old stump. Oak is the most frequently cited association, with other broadleaves also recorded. Because the wood is out of sight, the fungus gives every appearance of being a ground-dwelling agaric until it is dug up.
The season runs through summer and into autumn, with fruiting triggered by sustained rainfall. It is typically solitary or in small scattered troops rather than in large flushes. Records concentrate in eastern and central North America, especially in mature oak woodland and old parkland, with scattered reports from other temperate regions. It is generally regarded as an uncommon find.
Ecological role
Polyporus radicatus is a saprotroph producing a white rot in buried deciduous wood. By working on dead roots and buried stump remnants it occupies a decay niche that is largely invisible from the surface, contributing to the slow breakdown of the substantial woody biomass that trees leave underground after they die or are felled.
The pseudorrhiza is the functional solution to living below ground. It is a compacted strand of tissue that channels water and nutrients upward from the buried substrate and physically pushes the developing fruit body through soil and litter to the surface, where spores can be caught by air currents. This costly structure explains why fruiting is sporadic and dependent on prolonged wet weather, since the fungus must accumulate substantial reserves before it can build one.
Similar species
Picipes melanopus is the closest analogue, with a black-based stipe and a habit of arising from buried wood, but its stipe base is short and blunt rather than drawn out into a long tapering root, and its cap is smoother and greyer. Picipes badius grows directly on exposed logs, has a smooth glossy chestnut cap and much finer pores, and has a sharply demarcated black lower stem without a rooting extension.
Polyporus tuberaster also appears to grow from soil but is anchored to a hard, soil-bound sclerotium rather than a rooting stipe, and has a paler ochre cap with distinct dark scales, a fringed margin, and larger angular pores. Superficially the fungus can also be mistaken for a large fleshy agaric until the underside is examined, where the poroid rather than gilled surface settles the matter immediately.
