A tall, slender woodland mushroom with a wrinkled, greasy ochre cap, widely spaced white gills and a long tapering stem that continues underground as a deep root-like tail.
Overview
Hymenopellis radicata, long familiar as Oudemansiella radicata or Xerula radicata, is the classic rooting mushroom of temperate broadleaved woodland. It looks like an ordinary brown-capped agarics until it is excavated: the stem does not stop at the soil surface but continues downward as a slender, tough, tapering pseudorhiza that can extend fifteen centimetres or more before reaching the buried root or fragment of wood the fungus is drawing on.
The genus Hymenopellis sits in the Physalacriaceae along with Oudemansiella, Rhodotus and the honey fungi. Its members share large smooth spores, widely spaced gills, and stems that are cartilaginous and often rooting. Hymenopellis radicata is the most frequently encountered representative in Europe, and a series of close relatives with velvety or scurfy stems occupy the same niche in North America and Asia.
The species is distinctive for its proportions as much as its colour: a comparatively small cap held on a disproportionately long, thin, slightly twisted stem, so it stands well above the leaf litter. Combined with the radially wrinkled, greasy cap and the widely spaced white gills, this makes it one of the easier woodland agarics to name in the field.
How to identify it
Cap
3-10 cm across, bell-shaped to convex at first, expanding to broadly convex or flat with a low but distinct central umbo. The colour is ochre-brown, olive-brown, tan or greyish-brown, paler toward the margin. The surface is smooth, greasy to slightly sticky when moist and glossy when dry, and is characteristically wrinkled in radial folds and ripples, especially around the umbo.
Gills
White to cream, sometimes with faint brownish edges in age, broad, thick and notably widely spaced, attached to the stem by a notch or narrowly adnexed. They are soft in texture and the edges are even.
Stipe
The key feature. Above ground it is 8-20 cm long and only 0.3-1 cm thick, tapering upward from a slightly thickened point at soil level, whitish at the apex and progressively brownish downward, longitudinally lined and often distinctly twisted. Below ground it continues as a smooth, tapering root-like extension, the pseudorhiza, which may be as long again as the visible stem and ends attached to buried wood. There is no ring.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white, thin in the cap, and tough, fibrous and cartilaginous in the stem, so the stem twists rather than snapping cleanly. The spore print is white; spores are very large, smooth and broadly ellipsoid.
Where and when it grows
Hymenopellis radicata fruits on the ground in broadleaved and mixed woodland, in parkland and along wooded paths and hedgerows, usually singly or in small scattered groups rather than tufts. Although it appears to grow from soil, the pseudorhiza always leads down to buried hardwood: dead roots, root plates of felled trees, buried branches or fragments of stump. Beech is the most frequent association, with oak, hornbeam, birch and other broadleaved trees also serving.
The season runs from early summer through to late autumn, with fruiting most reliable after summer and early autumn rain. The species is common and widespread across temperate Europe and extends into temperate Asia, with closely related species filling the same role in North America. It is often noticeable around old stumps and in the shade at the base of large beech trees.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic white-rot fungus specialising in buried hardwood roots and root wood. Its mycelium degrades lignin and cellulose below ground, where conditions are stable and moist, and the long pseudorhiza is the structure that carries the fruit body from that hidden resource up through the soil and litter into the open air.
Root decay of this kind is an important and often overlooked part of forest nutrient cycling: when a tree dies or a stump is cut, a large share of its biomass lies underground, and fungi such as Hymenopellis are among the specialists that recycle it. Because the fruit body must be pushed up on a slender stalk from depth, the species invests in a tough, cartilaginous, twisted stem that can flex without breaking, and it stands taller than most litter-dwelling agarics, which helps spores catch air movement above the leaf layer.
Similar species
Megacollybia platyphylla shares white widely spaced gills and a woodland habit, but its cap is grey-brown with dark radial fibrils, its stem is stouter and does not root, and its base is attached to conspicuous white cord-like rhizomorphs running through the litter. Other Hymenopellis species, such as the velvety-stemmed H. furfuracea complex in North America, are separated by a scurfy or finely hairy stem surface rather than a smooth lined one.
Collybia and Gymnopus species can look similar in cap colour but have crowded gills and short stems without a rooting tail. Some Hebeloma and Cortinarius species grow in the same woods with brownish caps, but they have crowded gills, brown to rusty spore prints and no pseudorhiza. Excavating the stem base carefully settles the question in almost every case.
