Rose Black Spot Identification Guide

What You Are Actually Looking For
Rose Black Spot is a microfungus, so identification works differently from a mushroom hunt. You never see a cap and stem. What you find is the fungus expressed on living rose foliage: dark blotches on leaflets, a pattern of yellowing and leaf loss, and — under a hand lens — the tiny erupting structures in which the spores are made. Reading those structures accurately is what separates this species from the several other fungi that spot rose leaves.
The setting is any place roses grow: gardens, parks, hedgerows with wild dog rose, botanic collections, municipal beds. You are usually standing beside a bush in mid to late summer, looking at leaves that were clean in May.
First Impression and the Pattern on the Bush
Before examining a single leaf, read the whole plant. Rose Black Spot works from the bottom up. The oldest, lowest leaves near the soil are marked first, because the spores travel in splashing water, and the marking climbs the bush through the season as rain and irrigation throw inoculum upward. A shrub with clean upper growth and a bare, spotted lower half is showing the classic pattern.
Second, note the yellowing. Marked leaflets do not merely carry spots; they turn yellow around and beyond the spots, often over the whole leaflet, and then fall. By late summer a heavily marked bush can be almost stripped of foliage while still flowering.
Reading a Lesion, Step by Step
Pick a leaflet with several distinct marks and work through it methodically.
Shape and size. Lesions begin as small dark dots and expand into roughly circular to irregular blotches, most between 2 and 12 millimetres across. Adjacent lesions merge into large blackened areas as the season advances.
Colour. Dark brown to purple-black, usually uniform rather than zoned, and slightly sunken or flush with the leaf surface rather than raised as a whole.
The margin — the key character. Look at the edge of the spot with a lens. In this species the border is not a clean line. Fine dark threads radiate outward from the lesion into the green tissue, giving a feathery, fringed or star-burst outline. That diffuse radiating margin is produced by mycelium growing outward just beneath the cuticle, and it is the single most useful field mark. Round spots with sharply drawn edges belong to something else.
The halo. A bright yellow chlorotic zone usually surrounds the lesion and spreads outward, often engulfing the leaflet.
Surface. Lesions form mainly on the upper leaf surface, though marks appear on undersides too. Tilt the leaf into the light and check for a glistening quality within the spot.
The Fruiting Structures Under a Lens
At ten to twenty times magnification, look inside the black area for small, slightly raised, shining pustules — acervuli — scattered across the lesion. These are the asexual fruiting structures, and they push up through the leaf cuticle as the lesion matures. In wet weather or after a leaf has sat in a covered dish overnight, they exude creamy to pale pinkish masses of spores that dry to a crust. Finding those erumpent black pustules within a fringe-margined spot on a rose is effectively a positive identification in the field.
Later in the season, and especially on fallen overwintered leaves, minute disc-like sexual fruit bodies can form on the old lesions, but they are inconspicuous and are not something to rely on outdoors.
Marks on Petioles, Stipules and Canes
Do not stop at the leaflets. Examine the leaf stalks, stipules and the current year's canes. On green stems the fungus produces elongated purplish-black to blackish blotches, sometimes slightly raised or blistered, which persist through winter and act as the starting point for the following spring. Their presence on canes supports the identification and explains recurrence on the same bush year after year.
Seeing the Spores
There is no spore print to take, so substitute a simple slide mount. Lay a marked leaf on damp paper inside a closed box for a day, then scrape the surface of a lesion with a scalpel tip or press a piece of clear adhesive tape onto the pustules and mount it in water on a slide.
Under the microscope the asexual spores are distinctive: colourless, elongate and two-celled, with a slight constriction at the cross wall and one cell noticeably larger than the other, measuring roughly 18 to 25 by 5 to 6 micrometres. That unequal two-celled shape is the confirming character, and it is unlike the long, multi-septate, needle-like spores of the other common rose leaf-spotting fungi.
Season, Weather and Substrate
The fungus lives on Rosa and on very little else. It overwinters as mycelium in cane lesions and in fallen infected leaves on the soil, and starts the new season when spring rain splashes spores onto young foliage.
Conditions matter more than calendar date. Infection requires a long period of continuous leaf wetness — several hours at minimum, most reliably seven or more — at moderate warm temperatures. New lesions become visible roughly a week to ten days after infection, so a wet spell in June shows up as spotting in early July. Sheltered, crowded, poorly ventilated plantings hold leaf moisture longest and are where the marks appear first.
Separating It From the Look-alikes
Cercospora leaf spot of rose produces smaller, more regularly circular spots with a definite, sharply drawn edge, typically greyish or tan in the centre with a purple to reddish-brown border. There is no feathery radiating margin and no glistening erumpent pustules of the same kind; microscopically its spores are long, narrow and multi-septate.
Rose anthracnose makes small spots with pale grey or whitish centres ringed by dark red to purple margins. The dead centres often fall out, leaving shot-holes — something Black Spot never does.
Downy mildew of rose creates angular, purplish-red to dark brown patches that are bounded by the leaf veins rather than rounded, appears very suddenly in cool humid weather, and shows a sparse greyish downy growth on the underside of the lesion. Defoliation is abrupt and can start high on the plant.
Rose rust is unmistakable once you turn the leaf over: bright orange powdery pustules on the underside in summer, blackening in autumn, with only faint yellow flecking above. It never produces fringed black blotches.
Non-fungal marks — spray scorch, fertiliser burn, sun damage and splashed soil — are irregular, often follow the drip pattern of an application, lack any yellow halo pattern tied to individual spots, and above all show no acervuli under a lens. If ten minutes with a hand lens finds no erupting pustules inside the dark tissue, keep looking at other explanations.
