Rose Rust Identification Guide

A field walkthrough for Phragmidium mucronatum, the orange rust that pustules the undersides of rose leaves. Covers the seasonal spore stages, the many-celled tipped teliospores and how it separates from other rose rusts and mildews.

The First Thing You See

Rose Rust announces itself as colour. Walking past a rose in early summer you catch a scatter of pale yellow flecks on the upper surfaces of leaflets, and when you flip a leaf over the underside is dotted with vivid orange, powdery pustules. Nothing else on a rose leaf is that orange. Rub a finger across them and the colour comes away as dust — the spores are loose and abundant.

The setting can be a garden bed, a hedgerow of dog rose, a park planting or a wild scramble on a chalk bank. Because this rust completes its whole life cycle on Rosa, you never have to hunt for a second host plant; everything you need is on the same bush.

Reading the Season's Stages

The great advantage of this species is that it shows different structures at different times of year, and reading the calendar is part of the identification.

Spring. The earliest sign is on new growth. Minute pinprick fruiting bodies form on young leaves, petioles and shoots, followed by bright orange-yellow masses that erupt without any cup-shaped rim around them. On stems and leaf stalks these spring structures can be elongated and can distort or thicken the shoot, sometimes bending it. On leaves they sit mainly on the underside.

Summer. The familiar phase. Small round orange pustules, roughly half a millimetre across, break through the underside of the leaflets, often in loose scattered groups, each corresponding to a diffuse pale yellow blotch visible from above. Successive generations of these spores reinfect the same plant repeatedly through warm humid weather, so a lightly flecked bush in June can be densely dotted by August.

Late summer and autumn. The pustules on the undersides change colour. New ones emerge dark brown to black and eventually the whole underside can look sooty. This is the overwintering stage, and it is the one that gives the definitive microscopic characters.

Reading the Leaf Step by Step

Take a marked leaflet and work both faces.

Upper surface. Look for pale yellow to orange-yellow flecks, often slightly angular where veins constrain them, sometimes with a faint reddish or purplish tinge in older marks. There is no fringed black blotch and no downy growth.

Lower surface. This is where the fungus fruits. Under a hand lens each pustule is a small, cushion-like, erumpent mass that has visibly torn the leaf epidermis on emergence — you can often see the ruptured flap of tissue as a pale rim around the orange powder. Note whether the powder is orange or black, and whether both are present on the same leaf, which is common in early autumn.

Petioles and stems. Check the leaf stalks and young shoots for elongated orange streaks or swollen, distorted areas, particularly in spring. Rusts on stems can persist and are worth recording.

Whole plant. Heavily marked leaflets yellow overall and drop early, so the pattern of leaf loss is another supporting sign, though it is not diagnostic by itself.

Seeing the Spores

There is no spore print. Instead, press a strip of clear adhesive tape gently onto a mature pustule, lift it, and mount it sticky-side down in a drop of water on a slide. Alternatively, tap the underside of the leaf over a dark card to collect the dust and transfer it with a moistened needle.

The microscopic characters are what identify the species. The summer spores are round to broadly egg-shaped, yellow-orange, and covered in fine spines. The autumn spores are the important ones: long, cylindrical, dark brown, and divided crosswise into a row of several cells — most often six or seven, with a usual range of five to eight. Each spore has a distinct pale conical point at the tip, and it sits on a persistent colourless stalk that is noticeably swollen and thickened toward its base. The wall between the cells is finely warted rather than coarsely lumpy.

That multi-celled, cylindrical, tipped spore is the anchor of the whole identification. Any rust whose overwintering spores are only two-celled belongs to a completely different genus, so a single glance down a microscope at the black dust settles the group immediately.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

The species lives only on Rosa, both wild species such as dog rose and field rose and cultivated garden roses. It overwinters as the thick-walled autumn spores on fallen leaves and, in some seasons, in bark crevices and on old canes. In spring those spores germinate to produce a short-lived secondary spore stage that infects the emerging foliage, starting the cycle again.

Warm, humid weather with periods of leaf wetness drives the summer spore generations, and the fungus builds through the season rather than appearing all at once. Sheltered, densely planted sites and damp seasons produce the heaviest expression. Fallen leaves left in place beneath the bush are the principal reservoir from one year to the next.

Separating It From the Look-alikes

Other Phragmidium species on rose are the real challenge, because they look identical outdoors. The separation is microscopic and rests on the autumn spores. This species typically has five to eight cells with a well-developed pale conical tip and a finely warted wall. Its commonest companion on garden roses tends to have fewer cells, often four to seven, a coarsely warty or knobbly wall, and a blunter apex. Measure and count a dozen spores rather than judging from one, and note the pedicel: a long, colourless, basally swollen stalk is characteristic of the genus as a whole.

Rusts on neighbouring plants — for example the rusts of bramble or raspberry — share the same genus and the same many-celled spore architecture, so host plant identification is essential. Confirm you really are on a rose: pinnate leaves with serrated leaflets, stipules fused to the leaf stalk, and prickles on the stem.

Rose Black Spot produces dark blotches with feathery radiating margins mainly on the upper surface, not orange powder on the underside. The two frequently occur on the same bush, so check both faces of several leaves.

Powdery mildew of rose coats young shoots, buds and upper leaf surfaces in a white to greyish felt and often distorts the growing tip. It is white, superficial and wipeable, and it never produces erumpent coloured pustules.

Downy mildew of rose gives angular purple-brown blotches bounded by veins with a sparse greyish fuzz beneath, appearing suddenly in cool humid spells.

Spider mite infestation produces fine pale stippling and bronzing on upper surfaces with webbing beneath, but no pustules and no coloured spore dust — a hand lens tells them apart in seconds.

Common questions

How do I recognise Rose Rust with a hand lens?
Turn the leaflet over. Look for small cushion-like pustules that have burst through the epidermis, leaving a torn pale rim around a mass of powdery spores, bright orange in summer and dark brown to black by autumn. From above, the same points show as diffuse pale yellow flecks. Orange powder on the underside of a rose leaf is effectively diagnostic in the field.
How is it separated from the other rusts found on roses?
Only under a microscope, using the dark autumn spores. This species has long cylindrical spores divided into a row of usually six or seven cells, with a range of five to eight, a distinct pale conical point at the tip, a finely warted wall and a colourless stalk swollen at the base. Related rose rusts tend to have fewer cells and a coarser, knobblier wall, so count and measure at least a dozen spores.
Does it need a second host plant?
No. It completes its entire cycle on Rosa, which is why every stage can be found on the same bush across a single season: spring structures on new growth, orange summer pustules on leaf undersides, and dark overwintering pustules in autumn.
