A scarce, delicate club fungus forming slender rose-pink unbranched spindles among moss and short turf. Its clear pink colour is unique among temperate grassland clubs.

Overview

Rose Spindles is one of the most sought-after of the small grassland club fungi, producing slim, unbranched clubs 2-7 cm tall in a soft rose to pale coral-pink. The colour is unlike anything else in the habitat, and even a small group is conspicuous against green moss and turf.

The species sits in Clavaria (Clavariaceae), the family of brittle, white-spored club and coral fungi that also contains White Spindles and Violet Coral. Like its relatives it has soft, fragile flesh and a smooth, unornamented surface, with no stem clearly differentiated from the fertile club.

It is genuinely uncommon across its range and is treated as a species of conservation interest in several European countries, since it belongs to the grassland fungus assemblage that survives only in old, unfertilised turf.

Slender, unbranched, cylindrical to narrowly spindle-shaped clubs 2-7 cm tall and 2-5 mm thick, growing singly, in small groups or in loose tufts among moss. The clubs are often slightly curved or wavy and taper gently toward a blunt tip.

Surface and colour

The surface is smooth, moist and rose-pink to pale coral or flesh-pink, sometimes a little paler toward the base and yellowing or browning at the very apex in age. There is no distinct stem, though the extreme base may be whitish where it enters the moss. The clubs are never branched or crested.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is pinkish-white, soft and brittle, breaking easily. There is no marked colour change on handling beyond gradual fading. The spore print is white, and spores are broadly elliptical and smooth.

Where and when it grows

Rose Spindles grows among moss and short grass in unimproved, unfertilised grassland such as old pastures, hay meadows, churchyards, lawns and grassy woodland rides. It requires low-nutrient, undisturbed ground with a well-developed moss layer.

Fruiting occurs from late summer through autumn, usually after rain. The species is thinly distributed in Europe and reported from North America and parts of Asia, but it is nowhere common and many recording areas hold only a handful of known sites.

Ecological role

Rose Spindles belongs to the grassland fungus community whose members, on isotope evidence, appear to be biotrophic rather than simple decomposers, drawing carbon through an association with grass and herb roots that is still under study. Their strict requirement for unenriched soil is the practical consequence.

Because it is intolerant of fertiliser, ploughing and reseeding, the species is a strong indicator of long-established grassland and features in conservation assessments alongside waxcaps and earthtongues. The underground mycelium is persistent, and once a site is lost the fungus does not readily return.

Similar species

Clavaria fragilis is the same slender spindle form but pure white, and grows in denser, more crowded tufts. Clavaria zollingeri is deep amethyst-violet and repeatedly branched rather than pink and simple. Alloclavaria purpurea forms clusters of purple-brown to dull violet clubs, usually in conifer woodland and moss rather than open turf.

Ramariopsis pulchella is a tiny lilac branched coral, and pink-toned Clavulinopsis species tend toward apricot or salmon-orange rather than clear rose. Any pink club that is branched, wrinkled or tough belongs elsewhere.
