A stout, evenly rose-pink bonnet of beech and oak litter, larger and firmer than most of its genus, with widely spaced pale gills and a pronounced radish smell.
Overview
The Rosy Bonnet is a close relative of the Lilac Bonnet and was long treated as a variety of it. It is now generally recognised as a separate species on the basis of its larger, sturdier build, its consistently pink rather than lilac colouring, and its stronger association with beech and oak woodland on base-rich soils.
It is among the biggest species in Mycena, with caps regularly reaching six centimetres, and its firm flesh and stout stem give it a presence that most bonnets lack. Fruitbodies come up singly or in scattered troops through the deep leaf litter of mature woodland, and they are conspicuous against brown beech leaves.
The defining combination is colour plus structure: an even rose to shell-pink cap that pales toward a whitish margin, broad widely spaced gills joined by cross-veins, a pale pinkish-white stem with a woolly base, a white spore print, and a strong radish odour.
How to identify it
Cap
3–6 cm across, sometimes larger, conical becoming broadly convex to flattened with a distinct low umbo. Rose-pink, shell-pink or pale flesh-pink, richest at the centre and fading to almost white at the margin; hygrophanous and paler when dry. The margin is finely striate over the gills when moist, and the surface is smooth and slightly greasy in wet weather.
Gills
Broad, rather thick, widely spaced and connected by conspicuous cross-veins, adnate with a short decurrent tooth. White to very pale pink, with even, concolorous or slightly paler edges.
Stipe
4–10 cm long and 4–10 mm thick, cylindrical, straight, hollow and comparatively firm, smooth and polished, white to very pale pink, sometimes with a faint pink flush toward the base. The base is thickened and clothed in white woolly fibrils that trap leaf fragments.
Flesh, odour and spore print
Flesh is white to pale pink, thin but firmer than in most bonnets. It smells strongly of raw radish when crushed. There is no latex and no distinct colour change on bruising. The spore print is white.
Where and when it grows
It fruits from deep leaf litter in broadleaf woodland, with a marked preference for beech and oak, and is especially frequent on calcareous and other base-rich soils. It also occurs in mixed woodland and, less often, under conifers where the litter layer is thick.
Widespread and locally common through temperate Europe and recorded from temperate Asia and North America, it typically appears from late summer through autumn, with the main flush somewhat later than that of the Lilac Bonnet in many regions. Fruitbodies are scattered or in loose troops rather than clustered.
Ecological role
Like its relatives, Mycena rosea is a litter saprotroph. Its mycelium spreads through fallen beech and oak leaves, decomposing cellulose and lignin and helping to convert the seasonal leaf fall into humus. It takes no direct nutrition from living trees and forms no mycorrhizal association.
Its preference for base-rich soils reflects the chemistry of the litter it exploits rather than any tree partnership, and it often fruits in the same patches year after year where litter accumulates deeply. White spores released at litter level are dispersed by air movement close to the ground.
Similar species
The Lilac Bonnet (Mycena pura) is the principal look-alike and can be pink-tinted; it is smaller and more slender, usually lilac or violet-toned, with a proportionately thinner stem and a less pronounced umbo. Mycena diosma is darker grey-violet with a more complex odour and a duller cap.
Mycena pelianthina looks similar in stature but has dark purple-brown gill edges visible with a hand lens. Pink-capped Marasmius and Gymnopus species lack the striate cap margin, have tougher, wiry stems without a woolly base, and do not smell of radish, while Laccaria laccata has thick waxy pinkish gills and a fibrous, longitudinally grooved stem.
