A hard-fleshed rose-red brittlegill of beech woods with a distinctive matt, chalky cap surface and a stipe often flushed pink at the base.

Overview

Russula rosea, long known in field guides as Russula lepida, is among the firmest and most solidly built of the brittlegills. Where most Russula species are soft and easily damaged, this one has notably hard, dense flesh that resists a thumbnail, and the whole fruiting body has a compact, slightly squat look.

The cap is a warm coral to rose-red, and unlike the glossy red caps of many relatives it is matt and dry, frequently overlaid with a fine bloom that makes it look faintly powdered or chalky. Because that bloom is bound into the cuticle, the skin barely peels at the margin, a small but useful character. The stipe is white with a rose or carmine wash, usually strongest near the base.

Within the Russulaceae it belongs to a group of firm-fleshed red species associated with broadleaf trees. It is a common woodland fungus across temperate Europe and is one of the more approachable brittlegills for beginners because of the combination of hardness, matt cap and cream spore print.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 4–10 cm across, convex and often remaining so, only shallowly flattening at maturity. Colour ranges from coral pink through rose to a deeper carmine, sometimes with paler cream or ochre patches where the pigment has washed out. The surface is dry and matt, with a fine chalky or velvety bloom, and it is not greasy even in rain. The cuticle peels only a few millimetres at the margin.

Gills

Gills are adnexed to nearly free, fairly crowded, thick, and rigid rather than papery. They are white to cream, often with a pinkish or reddish tint along the outer edge near the cap margin, and they frequently fork near the stipe.

Stipe

The stipe is 3–8 cm tall and 1.5–3 cm thick, cylindrical to slightly barrel-shaped, and very solid. It is white with a rose or carmine flush that is usually concentrated toward the base or on one side. There is no ring and no volva, and the base is neither bulbous nor sheathed.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is white, exceptionally firm and dense for a brittlegill, and does not change colour when cut. There is no latex. The spore print is cream, and the spores are warty with partial ridge connections.

Where and when it grows

The Rosy Brittlegill is a broadleaf woodland species, most consistently found under beech and also common with oak, hornbeam and occasionally birch. It grows in leaf litter on a wide range of soils but is especially frequent on the well-drained loams and calcareous soils typical of mature beech hangers.

It is widespread across temperate Europe, from Britain and Ireland east through central Europe and Scandinavia, with related forms reported in parts of Asia and North America. Fruiting begins in midsummer and continues through autumn, with fruiting bodies appearing singly or in scattered groups rather than in dense troops.

Ecological role

Russula rosea is ectomycorrhizal with broadleaf trees, particularly beech. Its hyphae form a sheath around the tips of fine roots and penetrate between the outer cortical cells to create the Hartig net where nutrient exchange takes place. The fungus supplies mineral nutrients and water drawn from a much larger soil volume than the roots can reach; the tree supplies carbohydrates.

The unusually dense flesh means fruiting bodies persist longer than those of most brittlegills, drying and hardening rather than collapsing, which extends the window for spore release. Old specimens are commonly colonised by mould fungi and grazed by slugs and fungus-feeding beetle larvae, both of which spread spores through the litter.

Similar species

Russula aurora (R. velutipes) is similar in colour but much softer, with a bloomed but far more fragile cap, a pure white stipe and thinner flesh. Russula velenovskyi has a brick to rose-red cap that is depressed at the centre with a small umbo, softer flesh, and a stipe with only a faint pink wash. Russula paludosa is another firm red species but grows with conifers in damp acid ground and produces an ochre rather than cream spore print.

Russula emetica and its relatives are far more delicate, with shiny scarlet caps whose cuticle peels almost to the centre, pure white gills, a soft white stipe, and white spore prints — the opposite of the hard flesh and barely peeling matt cap of the Rosy Brittlegill.
