Overview

The Rosy Wood Mushroom, Agaricus semotus, is one of the smallest and daintiest species in a genus better known for hefty meadow mushrooms. Caps rarely exceed 5 cm and are carried on a slim stipe, so a fruiting group can be mistaken at a glance for something quite unrelated until the free gills darken to brown.

It belongs to Agaricus section Minores, a group of small, thin-fleshed species characterised by yellowing tissue and a sweet almond or aniseed odour. Within that section, A. semotus is picked out by the warm pinkish, lilac, or vinaceous tint of the fine radial fibrils that cover its pale cap — a colour rarely seen elsewhere in the genus and the origin of both its English and its alternative names.

Taxonomically the small yellowing Agaricus species are a difficult knot, and A. semotus has often been treated as interchangeable with A. dulcidulus and several other names. Field workers generally use the name for any small, pink-fibrilled, yellow-staining woodland Agaricus with a pendulous ring and an almond scent.

How to identify it

Cap

Small, typically 2–5 cm across, at first hemispherical or bluntly conical, expanding to convex and finally almost flat with a slight low umbo. The ground colour is white to cream, densely overlaid at the centre and thinning outward with fine radiating fibrils in shades of rose-pink, lilac-pink, or wine-purple. The margin is often paler and can carry small hanging veil remnants.

Gills

Free from the stipe, moderately crowded, and narrow. They pass from pale greyish-white through a soft dull pink to a dark chocolate brown, the change happening quickly in such a thin-fleshed mushroom.

Stipe

Slender and cylindrical, 3–6 cm long and only 3–7 mm thick, with a small bulbous or slightly swollen base. It is white and smooth above the ring and often finely floccose below. The ring is thin, membranous, and pendulous, sited fairly high on the stipe, and is easily torn or lost in older specimens.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thin and white but turns a clear chrome to lemon yellow where bruised or cut, most strikingly in the stipe base; this fades to ochre after some minutes. The odour is sweetly aromatic, of almonds or aniseed. The spore print is dark brown, and the spores are small — a microscopic hallmark of section Minores.

Where and when it grows

A litter-dwelling species of shaded, humus-rich ground. It occurs in deciduous and mixed woodland, on the leafy floor of parks and large gardens, along shady hedge banks, under conifers on needle litter, and quite often in shrubberies and among ornamental plantings where mulch has accumulated. It shows a preference for richer soils and sheltered spots.

Fruiting is from summer to late autumn, generally as scattered individuals or small loose groups rather than large troops. It is widespread through Europe and reported from temperate parts of North America and elsewhere; because it is small and easily overlooked among fallen leaves, it is probably more frequent than records suggest.

Ecological role

Agaricus semotus is a saprotroph of leaf litter and surface humus. Its mycelium colonises the partly decayed leaf layer and fine woody debris, breaking down cellulose and lignin residues left behind by earlier stages of decay and contributing to the formation of stable humus. In doing so it releases nitrogen bound up in litter back into a form available to the trees and ground flora above.

The small, thin fruit bodies mature and shed spores quickly, an economical strategy for a fungus working through a patchy and rapidly changing resource. Colonies are often short-lived in any one spot, shifting position year to year as the litter beneath them is consumed and replaced.

Similar species

Agaricus dulcidulus is essentially the same size and shape and is separated, when it is separated at all, by finer and more purple-vinaceous cap fibrils and slightly different spore dimensions; many mycologists treat the two as forms of one variable species. The Wood Mushroom (Agaricus silvicola) is a much larger, wholly white or cream mushroom with a broad pendulous ring, and while it also yellows, it entirely lacks the pink fibrils.

Small Lepiota species can look similar in the field, but they have a white spore print and gills that stay white or cream at maturity instead of turning chocolate brown, and their caps break into concentric scales rather than radiating fibrils. Young Agaricus xanthodermus is far more robust, has a squarish white cap, and produces a much more intense yellow stain accompanied by a sharp inky smell rather than almonds.
