Overview

The Ruby Bolete is a compact, vividly coloured member of the Boletaceae that was for many years known as Boletus rubellus or Xerocomus rubellus. It now sits in the genus Hortiboletus, a small group split off on molecular grounds whose members share soft flesh, dry velvety caps, and a distinctive microscopic and macroscopic feature in the base of the stem.

It is one of the easiest small boletes to notice in the field, because the cap is a genuinely saturated red rather than the muted browns of most of its relatives. Against short turf in a park or churchyard the effect is unmistakable, and the species is far more a mushroom of open grassy ground and woodland margins than of dense forest interior.

The genus name refers to gardens, an appropriate nod to how often these fungi appear in mown, managed landscapes where mature broadleaf trees have been retained. It illustrates a broader point about the family: many boletes are tightly tied to particular trees, and those trees do not have to be in a wood for the fungus to fruit.

How to identify it

Cap

Small for a bolete, typically 3 to 7 cm across, convex then flattening. The colour is a rich blood-red, crimson, or brick, sometimes fading toward rosy-brown or developing olive tones with age. The surface is dry, matte, and finely velvety or minutely granular, and older caps commonly crack into small patches with pale yellowish flesh showing between them.

Pores

The tube layer is lemon to golden-yellow when young, dulling to olive-yellow with age. Pores are moderately large and angular, and they blue promptly and distinctly when bruised or cut, the colour usually fading again after some minutes.

Stipe

The stem is slender, 3 to 7 cm tall and often only 5 to 12 mm thick, yellow at the very top and flushed or streaked with red over the middle and lower portions. It has no net-like reticulation, no ring, and no volva, and it usually tapers slightly downward.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is pale yellow, blueing weakly and slowly when cut. The single most useful confirming character is found by slicing the stem base lengthwise: a scatter of tiny, sharply defined carrot-orange to reddish dots is embedded in the flesh there, a hallmark of Hortiboletus. The spore print is olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

This is a mushroom of open, grassy places with scattered mature broadleaf trees rather than closed canopy woodland. It fruits in short turf in parks, on village greens, in churchyards, along woodland rides and grassy path edges, and on lawns, most often in the company of oak and lime, but also with beech, hornbeam, and other hardwoods.

It is widespread across Europe and reported from western Asia and parts of North America, though naming of red-capped small boletes on that continent is complicated by several similar taxa. Fruiting runs from midsummer through autumn, peaking after warm rain, and single fruit bodies or small scattered troops are the norm rather than dense clusters.

Ecological role

Hortiboletus rubellus is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheaths around the fine roots of oak, lime, and other broadleaf trees. The fungal partner greatly extends the effective absorbing surface of the root system, moving water and mineral nutrients into the tree from a volume of soil the roots alone could never reach, and receiving photosynthetic sugars in exchange.

Because its partners are common amenity trees, this species is a good example of a mycorrhizal fungus persisting in intensively managed urban and suburban ground. The mycelium lives year-round in the soil beneath the turf; the visible fruit bodies are brief seasonal reproductive structures, pushing up through mown grass to release spores from the tube layer into the air.

Similar species

Xerocomellus chrysenteron is similar in size and stature but has a dull olive-brown to tan cap that cracks to reveal pinkish flesh, rather than a uniformly red cap, and lacks the orange dots in the stem base. Hortiboletus engelii has a browner, less red cap with a slight rosy flush and also shows the orange stem-base dots, so cap colour rather than the dots separates the two.

Rubroboletus and Neoboletus species such as the scarlet-pored boletes are far bulkier, with thick stems, red or orange pore mouths instead of yellow, and much more dramatic instant blueing. Xerocomellus dryophilus, a western North American oak associate, has a comparable reddish cap but does not show the carrot-orange granules in the stem base when sliced lengthwise.
