Ruddy Panus Identification Guide
A practical walk-through for recognising Panus neostrigosus on hardwood logs, from its violet shaggy cap and decurrent gills to the tough, bendable flesh that separates it from soft oyster-like fungi.
The Moment You Spot It
Most encounters with Ruddy Panus happen on a walk past a fallen hardwood trunk in warm, humid weather. What catches the eye is a tight rosette of small fans, each one a startling reddish-violet, projecting from the bark or from the raw cut end of a log. Even from two metres away the caps look matte and plush rather than shiny, and that dry, felted quality is the first honest clue. Come back a week later and the same cluster will have faded to tawny cinnamon or buff, at which point the hairs, not the colour, become the leading character. Learning to recognise both the fresh purple phase and the faded brown phase is most of the battle with this species.
Reading the Cap
Take one fruit body and turn it over in your hand. The cap runs roughly 2-10 cm across. Young specimens are shallowly convex with a firmly inrolled margin; with age the centre sinks so the mature cap becomes shallowly funnel-shaped, kidney-shaped or fan-shaped, and the margin often becomes wavy, lobed or split. The surface is never viscid, never greasy - always dry. Under a hand lens it is covered in stiff, erect to matted hairs that grow coarser and denser toward the point of attachment. Colour on fresh material is wine-purple, violet-lilac or reddish-mauve; by maturity it is ochre, cinnamon or dull tan, and violet may linger only in the marginal hairs or in the deepest folds.
The Spore-bearing Surface
Turn the fan over and confirm gills, not pores. This is worth stating plainly, because the tough texture and shelf-like habit send many people straight to the polypores. The gills are narrow, crowded and clearly decurrent, running well down onto the short stipe in fine lines. Colour is pale lilac-pink in youth, then cream, then pinkish-buff to tan. Look hard at the gill edge with a lens: it should be even and entire, not saw-toothed or ragged. Gills fork occasionally near the stipe and sometimes carry low cross-veins between them, but they never break up into a maze.
Stipe, Base and Attachment
The stipe is short and often almost an afterthought - 0.5-3 cm long, 3-10 mm thick, lateral or eccentric rather than central. It is the same colour as the cap and clothed in the same stiff hairs, and it is solid and tough right through. Individual fruit bodies frequently fuse at the base into a common hairy stub anchored in the bark, and cutting into that stub exposes white to buff mycelium threading the wood beneath.
Flesh and Colour Change
Slice a cap in half from margin to base. The flesh is thin, only 1-4 mm thick, white to very pale tan, and above all it is tough and pliant. Bend a fresh cap: it flexes like leather and springs back instead of snapping. There is no latex, no juice and no colour change on cutting or rubbing, which is itself diagnostic - if your fan stains blue, brown or black, you are somewhere else entirely. Dried material becomes horn-hard and partially revives when rewetted, a classic behaviour in this group.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut a mature but not collapsed cap free of the wood and lay it gill-side down on paper that is half white and half black, since the print is pale. Cover it with a bowl or cup to hold humidity and leave it four to eight hours, or overnight if the specimen is dry. The result is white to very pale buff or cream. That single result eliminates a lot of the confusion set: any brown, rusty or yellow-brown print rules out Ruddy Panus immediately. Under a microscope the spores are small, smooth and cylindric to narrowly ellipsoid.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Ruddy Panus is a saprotroph and a wood decayer, producing a white rot in dead hardwood. Look on oak, maple, hickory, beech, elm and hackberry, with a strong preference for recently dead logs, large fallen branches, stumps and the exposed cut faces of felled trunks. It is one of the first gilled fungi to colonise fresh wood, often appearing within a season of the tree coming down. It will grow from buried wood and then appear to be on soil, so trace the base if the substrate is unclear. Fruiting runs from late spring through autumn wherever warm rain has fallen, usually in overlapping clusters or dense rosettes rather than singly.
Separating the Closest Look-alikes
Panus lecomtei (Lentinus levis) is larger and paler, cream to tan from the start, with a much less bristly surface and often more widely spaced gills; it lacks the violet phase entirely.
Lentinus tigrinus has a whitish to buff cap decorated with flattened dark brown scales rather than hairs, a well-developed central stipe, and gill edges that are finely serrated under a lens. It favours flood-plain and riverside wood.
Lentinellus ursinus shares the stalkless, hairy, brown habit but its gill edges are conspicuously jagged and saw-toothed, and it has no violet tones and effectively no stipe.
Panellus stipticus is far smaller, only 1-3 cm, kidney-shaped, buff to cinnamon, with a finely scurfy rather than shaggy surface and crowded orange-tan gills.
Crepidotus species are soft and fragile, lack a real stipe, and give a brown spore print.
Pleurotus and Hohenbuehelia have soft, watery, snappable flesh, broad gills and grey to white caps that are smooth, not bristly.
Tapinella panuoides grows on conifer wood, is yellow-brown, has soft flesh and repeatedly forking, cross-veined gills, and drops a yellowish-brown print.
