A tall, elegant bolete of eastern oak woods, instantly known by its extraordinarily long stipe carved with deep, ragged, shaggy ridges and by its cracked olive-brown cap.
Overview
Russell's Bolete is one of the most sculptural fungi of eastern North American woodland. Its stipe is long, slender and often gracefully curved, and it is covered from top to bottom in deep, coarse, torn-looking ridges that form a shaggy, lacerated network unlike anything else in the region's mycota.
It was described in Boletus and later moved through Boletellus before settling in Aureoboletus, a genus of the Boletaceae whose members typically have golden-yellow pores and dry or viscid caps without blue staining. The species honours John Lewis Russell, a nineteenth-century American naturalist.
Against its dramatic stipe, the cap is comparatively modest: dry, olive to yellowish-brown, and quickly breaking into a mosaic of areolae with paler flesh showing in the fissures. The disproportion between the small cap and the very long, shaggy stipe is itself a recognition feature at a distance.
How to identify it
Cap
Convex to broadly convex, 4–10 cm across, relatively small for the height of the fungus. The surface is dry and finely velvety at first, soon cracking conspicuously into angular patches that reveal paler yellowish flesh in the fissures. Colour is olive-brown, yellow-brown or dull reddish-brown, sometimes with rosy tints in the cracks.
Pores
Angular and rather large, bright yellow when young, becoming olive-yellow or greenish-yellow with age. They are unchanging or stain only faintly brownish when bruised, without a blue reaction. The tube layer is yellow and often slightly depressed around the stipe.
Stipe
The defining structure: very long relative to the cap, typically 10–20 cm tall and only 1–2.5 cm thick, tapering upwards and often curved or sinuous. Its whole length is covered with deep, coarse, raised ridges that split and tear into a shaggy, lacerated reticulum with elongated meshes, coloured reddish-brown to olive-tan over a yellower ground. The base is often narrowed and bound into litter.
Flesh and spore print
Pale yellow, soft, essentially unchanging when cut. The spore print is olive-brown, and the spores are unusually large and longitudinally grooved, a microscopic character shared with a few related genera.
Where and when it grows
Aureoboletus russellii is mycorrhizal with oaks and is also reported with other hardwoods and occasionally conifers. It favours sandy or gravelly, well-drained acid soils and is typically found singly or in small numbers along woodland trails, on slopes and in open oak woodland with a thin litter layer.
Fruiting takes place from early summer into early autumn, usually after warm rain. The species occurs across eastern North America, from southern Canada and New England south to the Gulf Coast and west to the Great Lakes and eastern Texas, and it is generally uncommon rather than abundant.
Ecological role
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming sheathed root tips on oak and exploiting a large volume of light, dry sandy soil for water and mineral nutrients. Its habit of appearing on eroded banks and trail edges reflects the thin litter and open canopy of the sites where its hosts grow on such substrates.
The very tall stipe raises the tube layer well above the litter, which improves spore release into moving air in the still conditions of closed woodland understorey; the deeply ridged surface may also help the slender stipe resist bending. Fruit bodies are soft and short-lived, decaying within a week and returning nutrients quickly to the surface soil that the mycelium exploits.
Similar species
Aureoboletus betula, sometimes called the Shaggy-stalked Bolete as well, shares a long deeply reticulate stipe but has a bright orange to reddish, smooth and distinctly viscid cap rather than a dry cracked olive-brown one. Boletellus chrysenteroides has a similarly cracked dark brown cap but a much shorter, only faintly roughened stipe.
Strobilomyces species have grey to blackish, coarsely shaggy-scaly caps and stipes with woolly scales rather than raised ridges, and their pores are whitish then blackening. Xerocomellus species share the cracked cap but are small, with short, smooth to faintly ribbed stipes and pores that usually blue on bruising.
