A step-by-step guide to Gymnopus dryophilus in leaf litter - the hygrophanous tan cap, crowded pale gills, hollow cartilaginous stipe and white spore print, plus the toughshanks it is confused with.
The Setting and the First Look
Russet Toughshank is one of the commonest litter fungi of oak and mixed woodland, and you are most likely to meet it as a scattered troop or an irregular line of small tan caps pushing up through fallen leaves. The impression is of something plain but tidy: caps 2-5 cm across, smooth, evenly domed, warm russet-tan in the centre and paler toward the rim. What makes you stop is the stalk. Grasp a fruit body and pull - the cap is soft but the stipe is springy, wiry and cartilaginous, and it resists in a way that no Mycena or small Agaricus would. That contrast between a soft cap and a tough shank is exactly what the common name records.
Reading the Cap
Examine the cap in good light. It is 2-6 cm across, convex at first and becoming broadly convex to nearly flat, often with a low, indistinct umbo and a margin that may become wavy or slightly uplifted with age. The surface is smooth, bald and faintly greasy when wet, without scales, fibrils or hairs. Colour is the important part: it is strongly hygrophanous, meaning it changes markedly as it loses water. Moist caps are reddish-tan, russet, foxy-brown or rich ochre-brown, most saturated at the disc; as they dry they fade from the margin inward to pale buff, cream or almost whitish, so a single troop can contain caps at several different shades at once. Do not let this variability push you away from the species - expect it.
The Gills
Turn the cap over. The gills are white to very pale cream, occasionally with a faint yellowish or pinkish cast in some collections, and they are notably crowded and narrow. Attachment is adnexed to nearly free - they approach the stipe and pinch away from it, rather than running down it. Check the gill edge with a lens: it is even and smooth, not scalloped or serrated. The pale gills contrasting with a warm brown cap is a useful two-colour signature at arm's length.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 3-7 cm long and only 2-5 mm thick, cylindrical, sometimes slightly enlarged or club-shaped at the base. It is smooth, bald and shiny rather than fibrous, and coloured pale cream to yellowish at the apex, grading to reddish-tan, foxy brown or dark rust toward the base. Slice it lengthwise: it is hollow through most of its length, with a thin, tough, gristly wall. At the very base look for a small pad of white mycelium binding leaves and twigs together, and check whether there are pinkish or brownish cord-like rhizomorphs running away into the litter, since their presence points elsewhere. The cap flesh is thin, whitish and soft, and it shows no colour change on cutting or bruising - no blue, no red, no blackening.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free, place it gills-down on paper that is half white and half dark, cover it, and leave it four to eight hours. The print is white to very faintly cream. This is a genuinely important step in this group, because a pale pinkish-cream print pushes you toward Rhodocollybia, and any brown or rusty print takes you out of the toughshanks altogether. If your cap is already dried and hygrophanously pale, rehydrate it briefly on damp paper before printing.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Russet Toughshank is a saprotroph living on fallen leaves, needles, twigs and buried woody debris. It is not attached to a living root system, which is why it can be abundant in one patch of litter and absent ten metres away where the litter is thinner. Oak leaf litter is the classic habitat, hence the epithet, but it also fruits freely under beech, birch and conifers, in hedge banks, on woodland paths and in leafy urban parkland. The season is long - from late spring through to late autumn, with a strong flush in early summer that few other litter agarics match. Fruit bodies grow gregariously, often in loose arcs, lines or clusters where a leaf drift has accumulated.
One ecological detail worth knowing in the field: this species is regularly attacked by the parasitic jelly fungus Syzygospora mycetophila, which produces irregular pale brown or cream gelatinous swellings and galls on the cap and stipe. Finding a troop of deformed, lumpy toughshanks is often a confirmation rather than a puzzle, since this host relationship is quite specific.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Gymnopus aquosus is very similar but paler, more watery-buff, fruits earlier in the year, and has a distinctly swollen or bulbous stipe base from which pinkish to ochre rhizomorphs radiate through the litter. Dig the base carefully rather than snapping the stalk.
Gymnopus ocior has a darker, more red-brown to date-brown cap and gills that are noticeably yellow rather than white or cream.
Gymnopus erythropus has a much darker red-brown to blackish-red stipe, conspicuously hairy at the base, and grows in tighter clusters on woody debris.
Gymnopus confluens grows in dense fused clumps, has a stipe covered in fine white down over its whole length, and has very crowded, narrow gills.
Rhodocollybia butyracea is larger and stouter with a greasy, buttery-feeling cap, gill edges that are finely eroded or serrated under a lens, and a pale pinkish-cream spore print.
Marasmius oreades lives in grassland rather than woodland litter, has thick, broad, widely spaced gills, and a solid, pliant stipe.
Small Pholiota and Tubaria species may match the cap colour but give brown or rusty spore prints and often show veil remnants at the cap margin.
