A slender woodland bonnet whose broken stem releases vivid saffron-orange latex that stains everything it touches. It is closely tied to beech leaf litter on lime-rich ground.

Overview

Mycena crocata is one of the most instantly recognisable members of the large genus Mycena, a group of several hundred small, fragile, bell-capped fungi in the family Mycenaceae. Where most bonnets are drab studies in grey and brown, this species carries a hidden pigment: any break in the stipe or cap flesh releases a thick, brilliant saffron- to orange-red latex that quickly stains the fungus, the surrounding leaf litter, and the fingers of anyone handling it.

The fruit bodies are gregarious rather than densely tufted, appearing in loose troops scattered through deep beech litter. Individually they are unassuming — a conical cap a couple of centimetres across on a wiry stem — but the colour reaction makes confirmation trivial in the field. Older specimens often show orange blotches on the cap margin and along the lower stipe where the latex has leaked and dried.

Within Mycena, only a small handful of species exude coloured latex, and the saffron-orange tone of M. crocata is unique among the European members of that group. Its strong preference for calcareous beechwood also makes it a useful indicator of soil chemistry for people mapping woodland fungal communities.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 1–2.5 cm across, at first narrowly conical or egg-shaped, later expanding to broadly bell-shaped with a low central bump. The surface is smooth, faintly translucent-striate when moist, and coloured pale greyish-brown to olive-brown, usually paler towards a slightly ragged margin. Any bruise or split develops an orange to saffron stain within a minute or two.

Gills

Gills are adnate to narrowly adnexed, sometimes with a tiny decurrent tooth, moderately spaced (around 13–20 reaching the stem), and whitish to pale cream. On ageing or handling, the gill edges pick up rusty-orange to saffron marks from leaking latex, producing a spotted appearance.

Stipe

The stipe is 4–12 cm tall and only 1–3 mm thick, hollow, stiff and wiry, brownish-orange to yellowish above and darkening downwards. The base is clothed in coarse orange-brown hairs and often appears rooted into the litter. Cutting or snapping the stipe releases the abundant saffron-orange juice that names the species.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is very thin, pallid, and immediately releases orange latex when cut. The odour is faint and unremarkable. The spore print is white, from smooth amyloid ellipsoid spores; cheilocystidia are club-shaped and finely roughened, a standard Mycena microscopic pattern.

Where and when it grows

Saffrondrop Bonnet is a litter-dwelling species of mature deciduous woodland, and in Europe it is strongly associated with beech (Fagus sylvatica) growing on chalk, limestone or other base-rich substrates. Fruit bodies emerge from the deep layer of packed leaves, small twigs, beech mast husks and partly buried woody fragments beneath the canopy, often in shaded hollows where the litter stays damp.

It occasionally accompanies hornbeam, oak or hazel where these grow on similar soils, but records away from beech are much scarcer. The main fruiting season runs from August into November. The species is widespread across temperate Europe, commonest in the southern and central beech belt, thinning northwards, with related material reported from parts of temperate Asia.

Ecological role

Mycena crocata is a saprotroph, breaking down fallen leaves, petioles, cupules and fine twiggy debris on the forest floor. Its mycelium runs as a fine white web through the litter layer, contributing to the slow conversion of leaf carbon into humus. Because beech litter is tough, waxy and slow to rot, this fungus is part of a specialised decomposer community adapted to that resource.

Fruiting is triggered by autumn rainfall after the litter has been warmed through summer, and the same patch will often produce troops of fruit bodies year after year, indicating a persistent, long-lived mycelial network. Spores are released from the white gills and dispersed by air currents moving through the understorey.

Similar species

The nearest relative is Mycena haematopus, which also bleeds — but its latex is dark red to purplish-brown rather than saffron-orange, its cap is reddish-brown with a scalloped margin, and it grows in dense tufts directly on decaying hardwood logs rather than scattered in litter. Mycena sanguinolenta is much smaller and more slender, releases dark blood-red juice, and has gills with distinctly dark red-brown edges.

Drab litter bonnets such as Mycena galericulata and Mycena polygramma share the conical grey-brown cap but produce no latex at all; M. polygramma additionally has a stiff, silvery, longitudinally grooved stipe. Any specimen that stains its surroundings orange when snapped can be separated from all of these on that character alone.
