Sandy Stiltball Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for Battarrea phalloides, the tall woody-stalked sand dweller whose small brown head sheds rusty spore dust. Covers the shaggy stipe, the buried volva, and how to rule out stalked puffballs and stinkhorns.

The first impression

You almost never meet this species in the middle of a wood. The setting is open, dry and usually disturbed: a sandy bank, a rabbit-scraped slope in a dune system, the loose crumbly soil under an old elder on a warm hedge line, the gravelly margin of a track, or the sandy spoil of a quarry. What stops you is a tall, stiff, wooden-looking column standing 10 to 40 cm out of bare ground with a small brown button balanced on the top, like a rusty nail driven in upside down. The proportions are wrong for a normal mushroom, and the texture is wrong too: dry, fibrous and papery rather than fleshy. Because the fruitbody dries in place instead of collapsing, you may be looking at a specimen that matured weeks or even months ago and simply stayed standing.

The first useful decision is made before you touch anything. Note the substrate under your boots. If it is sand or a very sandy loam, in the open, in sun, you are in exactly the right place. If you are on rich woodland humus in shade, reconsider the identification straight away.

Reading the head

The fertile head sits on top of the stalk as a low dome or flattened hemisphere, roughly 2 to 5 cm wide. A young, unweathered specimen is closed, with an outer skin covering the whole head. That skin lifts and peels away as a ragged little cap, and beneath it you find a dense cushion of powder in rust, cinnamon or ochre tones. Tip the stalk gently and tap it against your finger: a cloud of brown dust drifts off downwind. Once that powder has all blown away, the top of the stalk is left as a bare, slightly dished disc, and specimens at that stage are easy to walk straight past.

Make a point of confirming what is absent. There are no gills, no pores and no teeth anywhere on this fungus. The whole spore mass matures enclosed inside the head and is only released by weathering, which places the species among the gasteroid fungi rather than with the ordinary capped agarics.

The stalk

The stalk is the character that supplies the common name. It is long, stiff, hollow and genuinely woody in feel, typically 1 to 2 cm thick, so the silhouette is extreme: a slender column carrying a disproportionately small head. The whole surface is clothed in coarse recurved fibres and shaggy upturned scales that catch the light and feel rasping under a thumb. Colour runs from straw and pale tan to russet, often sun-bleached on the side that faces the light. Split one lengthways with a knife and you find a hollow tube with a fibrous pith, not solid flesh.

The base and the volva

Always dig. This is the single most informative thing you can do with a stiltball. Follow the stalk down through the sand, 5 to 10 cm if necessary, using fingers rather than a blade so you do not shear the structure off. At the bottom you should find a tough, persistent membranous sac, a volva, that the stalk emerges from. In sandy ground the sac is usually cemented with grains into a firm gritty cup, sometimes stained rusty where spores have washed down. Anything claiming to be this species without a buried sac at the base needs rethinking.

Flesh and colour change

There is no latex and no milky juice. The flesh of the stalk is dry, tough and cream to pale brown, and cutting it produces no colour reaction at all. Recording that absence positively is useful, because several of the fungi people confuse with it do change or do exude something.

Taking a spore reading

The classic overnight spore print does not work here, because a mature head has already thrown its spores and a young one has not yet opened. Instead, collect the dust directly. Hold a sheet of white paper under the head and tap the stalk; the deposit that lands will read rust-brown to cinnamon. Smear a trace onto a slide if you have a lens or scope. The spores are globose, thick-walled and covered in fine warts, ochre-brown in mass. Mixed among them you will find long, hyaline, spirally thickened threads, sometimes called elaters, which twist and untwist as they dry and help fling the spores clear. Those coiled threads are a genuinely diagnostic sight.

Substrate and season

This is not a wood-rotter and it does not build the usual root partnerships you would look for under an oak. It appears on nutrient-enriched sandy soils: dune systems, sandy hedge banks, elder thickets on light ground, dry warm banks and arid steppe-like habitats. Fruiting is mainly late summer and autumn, but the dried structures persist far beyond that and can be found standing through winter. Appearances are sporadic and a known site may produce nothing for several years and then several fruitbodies at once.

Separating it from the look-alikes

Tulostoma species (stalked puffballs). Same architecture, radically different scale. Their stalks are 2 to 5 cm and slender, the head is a small ball around a centimetre across, and crucially the head opens by a defined mouth or pore at the apex rather than by the whole outer skin peeling away. If you can fit the whole fungus in a matchbox, think Tulostoma.

Podaxis pistillaris. A desert and semi-desert species with an elongate, cylindrical to spindle-shaped head that stays wrapped around the spore mass instead of shedding a flat cap, and a spore powder that reads much darker, blackish-brown rather than rust.

Stinkhorns. A Phallus emerges from a soft gelatinous egg, has a white, spongy, chambered stalk and a pitted honeycomb head coated in olive slime. The stalk texture alone settles it: spongy and brittle versus woody and shaggy.

Stouter, larger-volva collections often labelled Battarrea stevenii. These differ mainly in bulk and in the size of the basal sac, and many mycologists treat them as the same variable taxon. Measure and record rather than agonise.

Dead plant stems and weathered agarics. Old dried grassland mushrooms can present a stalk with a shabby remnant on top. Dig for the volva and tap for rusty dust; neither will be there.

A quick field checklist

Open sandy ground, a woody shaggy stalk far longer than the head is wide, a small dome shedding rust-brown powder, a hollow fibrous interior, no colour change on cutting, and a sand-encrusted membranous sac buried at the base. Get all six and the identification is secure.
