Overview
Scaly Rustgill (Gymnopilus sapineus) belongs to a genus defined by warm yellow to orange colouring, gills that mature to rust or cinnamon, and a rusty orange-brown spore deposit. Gymnopilus sits in the family Hymenogastraceae and contains species ranging from tiny wood-chip colonisers to the very large clustered forms found on hardwood stumps.
This species represents the small to medium end of that spectrum. Its epithet sapineus references fir and pine, reflecting its habit of fruiting on coniferous wood, and its common name points to the fine appressed scales that break the cap surface into a subtly roughened, fibrillose texture. It is one of a cluster of closely related and much-debated taxa whose boundaries mycologists have redrawn repeatedly, so field records often cover a small complex of similar conifer-dwelling rustgills.
It is widespread through the conifer forests of the Northern Hemisphere and often appears in numbers on the same log year after year, its bright ochre caps standing out clearly against dark, mossy conifer wood.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2–7 cm across, convex when young and expanding to broadly convex or nearly flat, sometimes with a shallow umbo. The surface is dry and matt, coloured tawny yellow, ochre-orange or rusty tan, and is covered — especially toward the centre — with fine, flattened, slightly darker fibrillose scales that give it a minutely roughened appearance. The margin is often paler and may be faintly striate in wet weather.
Gills
The gills are close to crowded, adnate to slightly decurrent by a tooth, and moderately broad. They begin bright yellow to pale ochre and darken steadily to rusty orange or cinnamon-brown as the spores ripen. Rust-coloured spotting is common on older gill faces, and mature specimens often shed enough spores to tint the stipe apex.
Stipe
The stipe is 2–7 cm long and 3–8 mm thick, roughly equal or slightly swollen toward the base, and coloured yellowish to pale ochre above with browner, sometimes rusty tones below. It is fibrillose to silky in texture and typically stuffed then hollow. A true membranous ring is absent; at most there is a faint fibrillose veil zone that soon fades, and the base is often bound with pale mycelial threads to the wood.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is pale yellow to yellowish-buff, thin in the cap and firmer in the stipe, and does not change colour markedly on cutting. The spore print is a strong rusty orange-brown — the key genus character — and under a lens the spores are roughened and warty rather than smooth.
Where and when it grows
Scaly Rustgill is a wood-inhabiting fungus of coniferous forest. It fruits on stumps, fallen trunks, sawn logs, larger branches, buried roots and heavily decayed woody debris of pine, spruce, fir, larch and Douglas fir, and will also appear on conifer sawdust piles and bark mulch. Fruit bodies emerge singly, in scattered troops, or in small loose clusters of a few caps sharing a base — never in the very dense many-capped tufts of the largest members of the genus.
The season runs from late summer through autumn, sometimes into early winter in mild coastal areas. The species is broadly distributed across temperate and boreal Europe, North America and northern Asia, tracking the range of conifer forest and appearing readily in plantation as well as natural woodland.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic wood decomposer. Its mycelium spreads through dead conifer wood and causes a brown rot, breaking down cellulose while leaving much of the lignin behind; wood decayed in this way ends up brown, crumbly and cracked into cubical blocks. Brown-rot fungi are especially prominent on conifers, and Gymnopilus is one of several agaric genera that occupy this niche alongside the more familiar bracket-forming specialists.
Colonies persist for years within a single log, fruiting each season as conditions allow, and the crumbly residue they leave behind is an important long-lived component of forest soil organic matter — it holds moisture, supports invertebrates, and provides a rooting medium for mosses and seedlings. The fruit bodies themselves are grazed by slugs and fungus gnats.
Similar species
Common Rustgill (Gymnopilus penetrans) is extremely similar and overlaps in habitat, but its cap is typically smoother and more evenly orange-tawny without the fine scaliness, and its gills develop conspicuous rusty spots. Spectacular Rustgill (Gymnopilus junonius) is far larger, with caps to 15 cm or more, grows in dense clustered masses at the base of broadleaved trees, and has a distinct membranous ring on a stout, often swollen stipe.
Several Pholiota species share the tawny colouring but usually have a viscid or slimy cap with more prominent, upturned scales and a duller brown rather than rusty spore print. Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata) is also rusty-spored and occurs on conifer wood, but it is more slender and hygrophanous with a smooth, unscaly cap and a clear membranous ring.
