Also called pale shield, sawdust shield

A large pale shield mushroom whose whitish cap carries brown fibrillose scales over the centre, with free gills flushing pink and a stout ringless stem. It favours sawdust and mulch.

Overview

Scaly Shield (Pluteus petasatus) is the big, pale counterpart to the ubiquitous Deer Shield. Where P. cervinus is fawn to dark brown all over, P. petasatus is essentially a white or cream mushroom that has been dusted and scaled with brown fibrils across the middle of the cap, leaving the outer half clean and pallid.

It belongs to the same section of the genus Pluteus as Deer Shield and shares the group's microscopic signature of horned, thick-walled pleurocystidia. Field mycologists separate the two chiefly on cap colour, scale pattern, stature and substrate: P. petasatus is often the stouter and heavier of the two, with a thicker stipe and firmer flesh, and it has a marked affinity for man-made accumulations of wood waste.

The epithet petasatus means "wearing a broad-brimmed hat", a reference to the wide, flattened cap of mature specimens, which can spread well beyond 15 cm on rich sawdust and take on an almost plate-like profile.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 4–15 cm across and occasionally much larger, convex then broadly flattened, sometimes with a low umbo. The ground colour is white, cream or pale buff, and over the central third it is broken into fine appressed brown to greyish-brown fibrillose scales that thin out towards the margin, leaving the outer zone smooth and pale. The surface is dry and silky and the margin is even, sometimes splitting radially in old, wide caps.

Gills

The gills are free from the stipe, crowded, broad and ventricose, white when young and turning salmon or rosy pink as spores mature. Gill edges are even and concolorous. The free attachment is often very clear here because the stipe is thick, leaving a visible collar-like gap.

Stipe

The stipe is 5–12 cm tall and 8–20 mm thick, firm, more or less equal but usually with a swollen or slightly bulbous base. It is white and smooth or faintly fibrillose, occasionally with brownish fibrils low down, and completely lacks both a ring and a volva. White mycelial strands often bind the base into the sawdust or chip.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white, thick and firm, and does not change colour when cut or bruised. The spore print is pink to salmon; spores are smooth and ellipsoid. Microscopically the pleurocystidia are thick-walled with two to four apical hooks, matching the cervinus group.

Where and when it grows

Scaly Shield is strongly associated with concentrated wood waste: sawdust heaps, timber-yard debris, fresh wood-chip mulch on flower beds and paths, and piles of chipped branches. It also occurs naturally on hardwood stumps and buried logs, especially poplar, elm, willow and beech, but its most reliable habitat in towns and gardens is landscaping mulch.

Fruiting runs from late spring through summer and into autumn, often in clusters or arcs where the mycelium has spread through a mulch bed. It is widespread across Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and its dependence on wood waste means it turns up readily in parks, gardens, nurseries and industrial sites well away from woodland.

Ecological role

The species is saprotrophic and produces a white rot, degrading both lignin and cellulose in hardwood fragments. Fresh sawdust and chip provide a large surface area and a high nutrient load, and P. petasatus is an aggressive early coloniser of these materials, sometimes fruiting within weeks of mulch being laid.

As the substrate is consumed and compacted the fungus is displaced by later-stage decomposers, so a given mulch bed may produce heavy crops for one or two seasons and then fall silent. Spores released from the free gills are carried on air currents and are readily moved between sites in transported chip and sawdust, which is one reason the species spreads so quickly through managed landscapes.

Similar species

Deer Shield (Pluteus cervinus) is the main comparison: it is fawn to dark brown across the whole cap with fine radial fibrils rather than a pale ground with a scaly centre, and its stipe is usually more slender and more heavily streaked with dark fibrils. Pale forms of P. cervinus can approach P. petasatus, in which case the concentration of distinct brown scales over the disc and the stouter stature point to the latter.

Rosegills (Volvariella bombycina, Volvopluteus gloiocephalus) also have free gills and pink spores but always show a sac-like volva at the stem base; V. bombycina additionally has a shaggy silky-hairy cap and grows from wounds high on standing trunks. Whitish Agaricus species look superficially similar but have a ring on the stem, gills that turn chocolate rather than pink, and a dark brown spore print.

Neither. Like all Pluteus species the stem is bare, rising directly from the substrate, which distinguishes the genus from ringed Agaricus and from volva-bearing rosegills.

Caps commonly reach 10–15 cm on rich sawdust and exceptional specimens spread wider still, flattening into a broad plate — the source of the name petasatus, meaning broad-hatted.
