Scarlet Waxcap Identification Guide
Working through Hygrocybe coccinea in short unimproved turf: the moist blood-red cap, the thick waxy gills with a decurrent tooth, the dry red stipe with a yellow base, and the white spore print. Includes the characters that split it from Crimson and Vermilion Waxcaps.
The setting and the first look
Waxcaps are found by walking slowly across short turf, and the ground tells you as much as the fungus. You want unimproved, nutrient-poor grassland: an old churchyard, a hill pasture that has never seen fertiliser, a mossy lawn that is mown but not fed, coastal dune grassland or an upland grass heath. In that setting a Scarlet Waxcap reads as a small, intensely blood-red or scarlet cap sitting a few centimetres above the moss, glossy when wet, and looking almost enamelled. It is usually scattered rather than clustered, and where you find one you will often find a dozen across the same sward, mixed with other waxcaps in yellow, orange and grey.
Before you pick, note the surrounding vegetation height and whether the turf is mossy. Waxcap grassland assemblages are habitat-specific, and the habitat note is part of the record.
Reading the cap
The cap is 2 to 5 cm across, occasionally 6. Young fruitbodies are bell-shaped to conical-convex; they expand to convex and then flat, often with a low broad umbo and, in age, a slightly wavy or upturned margin. The colour is a deep blood-red to scarlet, fading with age and sun from the margin inwards to orange, then to orange-yellow, so an old cap can be two-toned with a red disc and an orange rim.
Texture matters. The surface is moist and slightly greasy in wet weather but never glutinous or slimy: you can hold the cap without it sliding between your fingers. In dry weather it dries to a matt, silky finish, sometimes finely radially streaky. The margin may be faintly grooved when saturated but is not deeply striate.
The gills
This is the section that carries the most weight. Turn the cap over. The gills are thick, soft and distinctly waxy, moderately spaced rather than crowded, and broad in the middle. Rub one between finger and thumb: it smears into a soft waxy paste instead of shredding into fibres, which is the family character.
Attachment is the key detail. The gills are broadly adnate, and at the stipe they run down as a short decurrent tooth. Get down at eye level with the cap tilted, or slice the fruitbody vertically, and look for that little tooth. Colour runs from deep red or orange-red when young to orange or yellow-orange with age, and the gill edge is typically paler and yellowish. At maturity the gill faces are often connected by low veins near the stipe.
The stipe and base
The stipe is 3 to 7 cm tall and 4 to 10 mm thick, cylindrical, often slightly compressed or shallowly grooved along its length, smooth, and hollow with age. It is dry to the touch throughout, never slimy or sticky, which knocks out several small red and orange waxcaps immediately.
Colour it carefully. It is red to orange-red over almost its whole length, becoming yellow or orange at the extreme base, and the base is not white. There is no ring, no cortina and no volva; the stipe simply narrows into the turf with a few pale mycelial threads binding moss and soil. Excavate rather than pull, because the presence or absence of a white base is a deciding character.
Flesh and colour change
Slice the fruitbody vertically. The flesh is thin, fragile, red-orange under the cap skin and in the stipe cortex, paler to whitish-yellow within, and it is watery in texture. Nothing changes colour on cutting and nothing blackens on handling, which is important because the conical waxcaps do exactly that. There is no latex. The smell is faint and unremarkable, with no honey note.
Taking the spore print
Cut the cap free, lay it gills-down on white paper or on a glass slide, cover it with a cup and leave it two to four hours. The deposit is white, sometimes with the faintest cream tint under a thick pile, and that white print is what confirms the genus rather than a small red-capped species from an unrelated group. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, hyaline and roughly 7 to 11 by 4 to 5 micrometres, and the basidia are mostly four-spored and more than five times the length of a spore.
Habitat and season
The main season is early autumn to late autumn, September through November in temperate regions, sometimes running into mild early winter. It appears in short, closed, nutrient-poor grassland with abundant mosses: old pasture, hill grassland, churchyards, lawns and verges that are mown but never fertilised, dune grassland and upland grass heath, and occasionally in open glades on poor woodland soils. It disappears from ground that is fertilised, ploughed or heavily fed, so it functions as an indicator of long-undisturbed grassland.
The ecology of the group is still debated. The old idea that waxcaps are simple litter recyclers does not fit the evidence well, and stable isotope work points towards a biotrophic association with plant roots or mosses. Whatever the mechanism, the practical consequence is the same: search old turf, not fresh compost or wood chip.
Separating it from the close relatives
- Crimson Waxcap, Hygrocybe punicea: substantially larger, cap 5 to 12 cm and distinctly viscid when wet, stipe coarsely fibrous-streaky in yellow, orange and red, and, decisively, the stipe base is white. Flesh whitish rather than red-orange.
- Splendid Waxcap, Hygrocybe splendidissima: robust and dry-capped, gills more clearly decurrent, base yellow, and a strong honey smell as the fruitbody dries.
- Vermilion Waxcap, Hygrocybe miniata: much smaller, cap dry and, under a lens, minutely scurfy or finely scaly especially at the centre; gills adnate without a pronounced decurrent tooth; more orange-red overall; common on acid heath and dune, sometimes on bare soil.
- Hygrocybe reidii: orange-red rather than blood-red, gills decurrent, and a clear honey smell when the flesh is crushed or the specimen dries.
- Hygrocybe insipida: tiny, with both cap and stipe distinctly viscid, and a yellow stipe base.
- Blackening Waxcap, Hygrocybe conica and relatives: start red or orange but the cap is conical and pointed, and all parts stain grey-black where handled or with age.
- Yellow waxcaps such as Hygrocybe ceracea and Hygrocybe glutinipes: no red pigment at maturity; glutinipes has a strikingly slimy stipe.
The three-character shortcut
A medium-sized red waxcap with a moist but non-slimy cap, thick waxy gills that are adnate with a short decurrent tooth, and a dry red stipe whose base is yellow rather than white, is Scarlet Waxcap.
