Sculpted Puffball Identification Guide

How to recognise Calbovista subsculpta in western mountain forests: a large white ball patterned with low felty pyramidal warts, each with a dark central point, a thick tough rind and a firm white interior. Includes separation from Calvatia sculpta, Calvatia booniana and earthballs.

The setting and the first look

This is a mountain species, and the setting narrows things immediately. You are somewhere in the western North American ranges, in open conifer forest of fir, pine or spruce, often between about 1500 and 3000 metres, walking a roadbank, a trail edge or a patch of disturbed mineral soil in early summer as the ground dries out after snowmelt. What you see is a white ball, usually 8 to 15 cm across, sitting half-exposed on the soil, sometimes among several others in a loose group.

At a glance it looks smooth and pale, but the moment you get close the surface resolves into a pattern of low, blunt, pyramid-shaped plates. That patterned skin, more sculpted than spiny, gives the species its name and is the first character to record.

Reading the outer surface

Get down to the fruitbody and look across it with side light. The surface is divided into shallow warts roughly 2 to 6 mm across, each a low pyramid or truncated cone with a felted, matted texture. At the summit of each wart there is a darker brown or grey point, formed by fibrils converging to a tip, and this dark centre in a pale wart is the most reliable surface character.

The warts are firm and attached, not detachable spines: rub the surface and they do not come away as individual points the way the granules of a common puffball do. With age they flatten, wear down and slough off in patches, leaving a smoother, tan-stained skin, so old fruitbodies need looking at where the pattern survives near the base or in a sheltered fold.

Shape, size and base

The fruitbody is 6 to 15 cm wide, occasionally larger, and subglobose to broadly turbinate, meaning ball-shaped but often slightly flattened on top and narrowed a little below. It is white to cream when fresh and dulls to pale tan or brownish with age.

At the base there is a stout cord and a small rooting attachment binding soil and duff. Note that there is no long stalk and no big inflated sterile stem: what sterile tissue exists is confined to a small pad at the bottom of the interior. Lift the fruitbody free of the soil and check for a membranous sac or bag around the base, because its absence is part of the identification.

The rind, by touch and by knife

Press the fruitbody with a thumb. It feels firm and resistant, not spongy, because the rind is unusually thick and tough for a puffball, commonly 2 to 4 mm and leathery in section. That thickness is one of the strongest characters in the species and it is best appreciated by cutting.

Cutting it in half: the essential step

Slice the whole fruitbody vertically from top to bottom with a sharp knife and examine the cut face. In a fresh specimen the interior, the gleba, is pure white, firm and completely homogeneous, with a fine even texture like dense marshmallow and no internal structure whatsoever. There should be no chambers, no dark marbling, and no outline of any cap, gills or stipe pattern within.

As the fruitbody matures the gleba passes through pale yellow to olive-yellow, then to a powdery purple-brown or coffee-brown spore mass threaded through with capillitium. The small sterile base sits as a shallow pad at the bottom, occupying only a fraction of the interior. Old fruitbodies do not open by a neat apical pore; instead the top cracks and flakes away irregularly, and the ball weathers down through the season into a ragged cup that can persist into the following spring.

Spores

The usual spore print routine does not apply. Instead, let a mature fruitbody release its spores onto white paper by tapping it, or examine the brown powder directly. The spores are globose, roughly 3 to 5 micrometres, with fine warts and a short pedicel, and the capillitium threads are thick-walled and branched with tapering ends. In the field the practical test is simply that the mature interior is a dry brown dust, not a slimy or gelatinous mass.

Substrate and season

It fruits on soil in montane conifer forest, especially where the ground has been disturbed: roadcuts, trail edges, skid tracks, gravelly banks and open duff under fir and pine. The main flush is spring to early summer, often within a few weeks of snowmelt, with a smaller autumn appearance after rain in some years. It is saprotrophic, breaking down organic matter in duff and mineral soil, and it is frequently gregarious, so scanning ahead along a bank often produces several fruitbodies at different stages, which is useful because young and old specimens show different characters.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

  • Sculptured Giant Puffball, Calvatia sculpta: the closest confusion by name, but unmistakable in the flesh. Its warts are tall, sharply pointed pyramids often a centimetre or more high, frequently bent or leaning and sometimes joined at the tips, giving a spiky, angular outline. The fruitbody is more pear-shaped with a substantial sterile base, and the rind is thinner. Mostly Sierra Nevada and neighbouring ranges.
  • Western Giant Puffball, Calvatia booniana: far larger, commonly 20 to 50 cm, distinctly flattened, with the surface broken into low, flat, irregular plates or patches rather than pointed warts, a thin rind and a large sterile base. Typically in sagebrush country and open ground rather than montane forest duff.
  • Common Puffball, Lycoperdon perlatum: much smaller, pear-shaped with a distinct stalk-like base, covered in detachable conical spines with granules between them that leave a pockmarked pattern when rubbed off, and it opens by a neat round pore at the apex.
  • Earthballs, Scleroderma species: rind thin but very tough and often scaly or cracked, and the interior turns firm and purplish-black with a white marbled network very early, while still hard. No sterile base pad, and the whole texture in section is quite different from a homogeneous white gleba.
  • Amanita buttons: an egg-like white ball on the ground under host trees, but a vertical slice shows the outline of a folded cap, gills and stipe embedded in the interior, plus a distinct outer veil layer and often a rooting base.
  • Bovista species: smaller, becoming grey or brown, with a thin papery rind, and they detach from the substrate to roll free.

Working order

Altitude and forest type, then the low felty warts with dark centres, then the thick rind under a thumb, then a vertical cut showing a homogeneous white interior with a small sterile pad. If the warts are tall and pointed, or the interior is dark and marbled while still firm, you are looking at something else, and the sections above tell you where to go next.

Common questions

How does it differ from Calvatia sculpta, which has a very similar name?
By the warts. Sculpted Puffball has low, blunt, felty pyramids only a few millimetres high, each with a small dark converging point at the tip, and a thick tough rind. Calvatia sculpta has tall, sharply pointed pyramidal warts often a centimetre or more high, frequently bent or joined at the tips, giving a spiky outline, with a thinner rind and a larger sterile base.
What should the inside look like when I cut one open?
In a fresh fruitbody the gleba is pure white, firm and completely uniform, with no chambers, no dark marbling and no outline of a cap or stipe. With maturity it passes through yellow and olive to a dry purple-brown or coffee-brown powder, and a small sterile pad remains at the base.
