A small tawny-brown mushroom of woodchip beds and fallen twigs, recognised by the whitish scurfy veil flecks along its cap margin and its strongly hygrophanous, fading cap.
Overview
The Scurfy Twiglet is one of the commonest small brown mushrooms of gardens, park borders and path edges, and one of the few that can be found in almost any month of the year. It belongs to Tubaria, a modest genus of litter and twig decomposers whose members share thin caps, rather distant gills, and pale ochre-brown spores.
Its defining feature is the veil: young caps carry a fringe of whitish, mealy or cottony flecks around the margin, the remains of a thin partial veil, which gives the species both its English and Latin names (furfuraceus meaning bran-like or scurfy). These flecks wash away in heavy rain, which is why identification is easiest on fresh, young specimens.
The species is also notably hygrophanous, meaning the cap changes colour dramatically as it dries. A single troop can contain caps ranging from rich cinnamon to pale straw, which often misleads observers into thinking they have found two different fungi.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 1-4 cm across, at first convex with an inrolled margin, soon flattening and sometimes becoming slightly depressed or wavy. When moist it is tawny, cinnamon or date-brown with a translucently striate margin; as it dries it pales from the centre outwards to buff, ochre or pale tan. Scattered whitish scurfy veil flecks cling to the margin, especially in young specimens.
Gills
Gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, moderately broad and rather well spaced, pale ochre at first and darkening to cinnamon-brown as spores mature. The gill edges are often paler and finely fringed.
Stipe
The stem is 2-5 cm long and 2-4 mm thick, cylindrical, hollow, pale brown and often darker towards the base. It is covered with fine whitish fibrils, particularly in the lower half, and there is a mat of white mycelial threads binding the base to the substrate. A ring is absent, although a faint fibrillose veil zone can sometimes be traced near the top.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is thin, watery brown when moist, paler when dry, with no colour change when cut. The spore print is pale ochre-brown to clay-brown.
Where and when it grows
The Scurfy Twiglet is a colonist of small woody debris. It fruits abundantly on woodchip mulch in flowerbeds and municipal plantings, and also on buried twigs, fallen sticks, old bark, sawdust piles, hedge clippings and compacted soil along paths. It is often overlooked because it rarely grows on large logs, preferring material of finger thickness or less.
It is widespread across Europe, North America and much of the temperate northern hemisphere. Fruiting peaks in autumn and continues right through mild winter spells into early spring, making it one of the reliable cold-season finds where frost is not prolonged.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic fungus and a very effective early decomposer of small woody litter. Its mycelium colonises twigs, chips and bark fragments, breaking down cellulose and lignin and helping convert coarse mulch into humus. The white mycelial mat at the stem base is often visible binding chips together.
Because it tolerates cool temperatures and disturbed ground, it is one of the first fungi to appear in newly laid woodchip beds, frequently fruiting within months of the mulch being spread. In this role it is part of the succession of species that progressively softens and consumes a mulch layer over several years.
Similar species
Tubaria conspersa is very similar but has a more densely felted, whitish-flecked cap surface across the whole disc rather than just the margin, and it favours grassy ground and path edges. Galerina species overlap in size and colour but tend to have more conical or bell-shaped caps, rustier brown spore prints, and in the case of Galerina marginata a distinct membranous ring and a clustered habit on stumps.
Psathyrella species growing in the same mulch beds are separated by their very brittle, chalky-white stems and their dark purple-brown to blackish spore prints. Kuehneromyces mutabilis is larger, grows in dense tufts on hardwood stumps, and has a well-defined ring plus a scaly stem below it. None of these show the combination of pale ochre spores, distant slightly decurrent gills, and bran-like flecks on the cap edge.
