Shaggy Bracket Identification Guide

How to recognise Inonotus hispidus on a living ash trunk in both its states: the soft rusty-orange hairy cushion of late summer and the blackened, charred-looking shelf that clings on through winter.

The first impression, and where you are looking

Shaggy Bracket is usually spotted from a distance and from below. You are standing under a mature ash in a hedgerow, park or riverside strip, and something is projecting from the trunk two to five metres up, often directly above an old pruning wound or a broken branch stub. In late summer it reads as a thick, soft, foxy-orange cushion with a matted, unkempt upper surface. By midwinter the same shelf has turned near-black and looks like a lump of charred timber welded to the bark, and many people photograph the two states without realising they are the same fungus at different ages. Learning to name the black winter stage is half the skill with this species.

The upper surface

Fresh brackets are broadly semicircular to cushion-shaped, commonly 10 to 25 cm across and 3 to 10 cm thick at the point of attachment, with no stalk of any kind and a very broad, sessile join to the wood. The whole upper surface is clothed in a dense mat of coarse, stiff hairs a few millimetres long, which is what gives the species both its English and its Latin name. Run a hand over it and it feels like matted coir rather than the smooth suede of many other brackets.

Colour in the fresh state is a warm rusty ochre to yellow-orange. The margin is thick, blunt and rounded, usually paler and more yellow than the disc, and in humid weather it beads with amber droplets. As the season advances, the colour darkens progressively from the attachment outwards, running through rust-brown to umber and finally to a dull matt black; the hairs mat down and set into a stiff, cracked crust. Importantly, there are no crisp concentric colour bands of the kind you see on the thin, tough turkeytail-style brackets.

The spore-bearing surface

Turn a specimen over, or use a mirror or a phone camera on a stick if it is out of reach. The underside is poroid, not gilled. When young it is a pale cream to slightly greenish-yellow, and it bruises and ages to dull brown then rust. Pores are small and round, roughly two to three per millimetre, so a hand lens is worth using rather than judging by eye.

One structural point matters more than any other for the genus: cut the bracket vertically and you will see a single tube layer, one to four centimetres deep, sitting under the fibrous flesh. It is not stacked in stratified annual layers. That single layer marks an annual bracket that grows, spore-bearing and dies within one season, rather than a perennial that adds a new tube layer each year.

Flesh in section, and colour changes

A vertical cut through a fresh bracket is the most informative thing you can do. Young flesh is soft, spongy and remarkably watery; squeeze it and liquid runs out. It is radially fibrous, faintly zoned, and coloured a warm rusty tawny-brown all the way through. That rusty-brown context is the signature of the genus and separates it at a glance from the white-fleshed brackets. On drying, the same flesh becomes light, brittle and corky, crumbling easily between finger and thumb, and it darkens towards blackish-brown. There is no dramatic bruising reaction beyond a slow darkening. If you carry potassium hydroxide, a drop on the flesh turns it instantly and deeply black, a reliable genus-level reaction.

Reading the spores

You cannot lay a bracket on paper the way you would a capped mushroom, so improvise. Cut a wedge with an intact pore surface, prop it pores-down over a sheet of white paper and a strip of dark card, cover the whole arrangement with a box to keep the humidity up, and leave it overnight. The deposit is a yellowish to rusty brown, consistent with the flesh colour. In the field there is a shortcut: mature brackets shed so heavily that a fine rust-coloured dusting settles on the bark, ivy leaves and ground immediately below, and that dusting is often the thing that makes you look up and find the fruit body in the first place.

Substrate, season and ecology

This fungus fruits from living or very recently dead standing trunks of broadleaved trees. Ash is by far the commonest host, so much so that a big shaggy orange bracket high on an ash is a near-certain call. Walnut, apple, plane, elm, mulberry and occasionally oak also carry it. Infection typically begins at a wound, pruning scar or branch stub, and the fungus produces a white rot of the heartwood, hollowing the trunk from within while the outer sapwood and canopy may still look entirely intact. Brackets appear from July to October, usually singly or as a short vertical row above the entry wound, and the blackened remains hang on into the following spring.

Separating it from its look-alikes

Inonotus dryadeus also has rusty-brown flesh and weeps amber droplets, but it grows at the base and buttress roots of oak rather than high on ash, and its upper surface is lumpy, pale cream-ochre and smooth to finely velvety, never coarsely shaggy.

Inonotus cuticularis favours beech, forms thinner and often tiered brackets with finer, more appressed hairs and a sharper margin.

Inonotus radiatus makes small, thin, wavy tiers on alder and birch and never reaches the thick cushion form of Shaggy Bracket.

The hard perennial crust brackets, Phellinus and Fomitiporia species, share brown flesh but are woody-hard, grey-black and cracked above, and a section shows several stacked tube layers rather than one.

Laetiporus sulphureus is bright sulphur-yellow and orange with a smooth suede surface, sulphur-yellow pores and white flesh; the flesh colour alone settles it.

Phaeolus schweinitzii has brown flesh and a hairy surface but grows at the base of conifers or from their roots, forms a rosette on a stout central stem, and shows greenish-yellow pores that bruise brown.

Finally, an old blackened Shaggy Bracket can be mistaken for the hard black balls of Daldinia concentrica, which also favours ash. Cut it: Daldinia shows silvery concentric bands inside a solid ball, while the bracket shows fibrous rusty-black flesh with a poroid layer beneath.

Common questions

How do I recognise Shaggy Bracket in winter when it has gone black?
Look for the shape and position rather than the colour: a thick, broadly attached, stalkless shelf high on an ash trunk above a wound, hard and charred-looking, with a matted crust of flattened hairs on top. Cut it and you will still find fibrous rusty-black flesh and a single collapsed tube layer underneath.
Which trees does Shaggy Bracket grow on?
