Overview

The Shaggy Ink Cap (Coprinus comatus) is among the most recognisable fungi in the world. Young fruitbodies are tall white cylinders, like a barrister's wig standing on a slender stem, covered in coarse shaggy scales that curl outwards and upwards from a smooth pale apex. Nothing else of that shape and colour appears on roadsides and lawns.

Its most remarkable property is autodigestion, or deliquescence. Rather than drying out, the gills digest themselves from the cap margin upwards, converting into a black inky fluid that drips away and carries the mature spores with it. This progressive liquefaction lifts the cap edge, exposes successive bands of gills to the air and effectively creates a self-cleaning spore-dispersal mechanism. A fruitbody can go from pristine white to a black puddle within a day or two.

Modern classification restricts the genus Coprinus to this species and a few close relatives, with most other inkcaps moved to Coprinopsis, Coprinellus and Parasola on molecular grounds. Coprinus comatus remains the type and best-known member.

How to identify it

Cap

5 to 15 cm tall and 3 to 6 cm wide, at first a tall closed cylinder or bullet shape with a smooth pale tan apex, later opening slightly bell-shaped. The whitish surface breaks into large, coarse, shaggy, upturned scales that are buff to pale brown at their tips. The cap never expands flat; it dissolves instead.

Gills

Extremely crowded, thin, free from the stipe and packed vertically in the narrow cap. They pass through a clear colour sequence: white when young, then pink, then grey and finally black, deliquescing into ink from the lower margin upwards.

Stipe

10 to 30 cm tall and 1 to 2 cm thick, white, smooth, hollow with a fine internal fibrous strand, tapering upwards from a slightly bulbous base. A narrow membranous ring is present and is characteristically loose and movable, often slipping down the stipe or shed altogether.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin, soft and white, blackening as autodigestion proceeds. The spore print is black, and the spores are smooth, dark and ellipsoid with a distinct germ pore.

Where and when it grows

This species colonises disturbed, nutrient-rich ground: roadside verges, lawns and playing fields, park edges, gardens, wood-chip mulch beds, compost, landfill caps, building sites and newly landscaped ground. It often appears in dense troops or lines along a buried disturbance such as a pipe trench or old track.

Fruiting runs from summer to late autumn and continues until hard frosts, with big flushes after heavy rain. It is common and cosmopolitan across Europe, North America, Asia, Australasia and elsewhere, largely as a consequence of following human ground disturbance.

Ecological role

Coprinus comatus is saprotrophic, breaking down buried plant debris, grass thatch, wood chips and other organic matter in enriched soil. It is a vigorous coloniser of freshly disturbed ground, where competition from established fungi is low, and its rapid growth and quick spore release suit a short-lived, opportunistic strategy. Mycelium can also capture nematodes as an additional nitrogen source.

The deliquescing habit is central to its life cycle. Because the gills are packed so closely in a narrow cylinder there is no room for spores to fall clear, so the fungus dissolves the oldest tissue first, opening the cap margin and letting each successive layer of spores escape into the air or drip away in the ink. The whole process is completed in a day or two, and fruitbodies rarely persist long enough to weather.

Similar species

The Common Ink Cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria) shares the deliquescing habit but is grey-brown, ovoid to bell-shaped and essentially smooth, at most finely scaly near the apex, and typically grows in dense clusters from buried wood at the base of stumps. The Magpie Inkcap (Coprinopsis picacea) is dark brown to blackish with large flat white veil patches rather than shaggy upturned scales.

Coprinopsis nivea and other small white inkcaps are far more delicate, dung-associated and powdery-granular rather than shaggy. In arid regions the Desert Shaggy Mane (Podaxis pistillaris) has a similar tall scaly outline but is dry and woody, never deliquesces, and holds a mass of powdery brown spores inside a persistent shell. Young Agaricus species with white shaggy caps are separated by their non-deliquescing gills, chocolate-brown spore print and firm attached ring.
