A stout, heavily shaggy relative of the Parasol Mushroom with a smooth unbanded stem, a bulbous base and pale flesh that stains saffron then dull reddish brown where it is cut.

Overview

The Shaggy Parasol is a large agaric that was for many years placed in Macrolepiota and is still frequently listed under the name Macrolepiota rhacodes. Molecular studies moved it, along with the green-spored parasols, into the genus Chlorophyllum, where it sits as one of the white-spored members of an otherwise variable group. The spelling rachodes is also encountered in older literature.

It is a shorter, thicker-set fungus than the true Parasol, with a cap that rarely exceeds 15 cm and a proportionally stouter stem ending in a swollen, sometimes abruptly marginate bulb. Its defining visual character is the cap surface: large, coarse, backwards-curling scales that stand well clear of the surface, giving a genuinely ragged, unkempt outline rather than the neat concentric shingling of Macrolepiota procera.

Several closely related forms are recognised, including Chlorophyllum olivieri, with a duller greyish-brown, less strongly contrasting cap, and Chlorophyllum brunneum, which has an abrupt, rimmed basal bulb and a simpler ring. Together these form a species complex whose members are separated on bulb shape, ring structure and cap tone, and which is best treated as a group in the field unless those details are checked.

How to identify it

Cap

At first a rounded ball or barrel with a smooth pale brown skin, expanding to convex and finally flat, 6-15 cm across. As it expands the surface breaks into large, thick, irregular scales with upturned or recurved tips on a whitish to cream ground. A smoother, less broken area often remains near the centre, but it is not the sharply defined solid dark disc seen on the true Parasol. Overall tone is warm pale brown to greyish brown.

Gills

Free and separated from the stem by a collar, crowded, soft and broad. White to cream when fresh, dulling to buff and often developing reddish or brownish spotting where bruised or aged.

Stipe

10-20 cm tall, 1-2 cm thick, smooth and unpatterned, pale whitish to dingy brownish, and darkening or reddening where handled. The base is markedly swollen into a bulb, which in the related C. brunneum is abruptly flattened and rimmed. The ring is thick, double, felty on the underside and movable on the stem.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white and thick in the cap. Cutting or bruising provokes a distinctive colour reaction: an initial saffron to orange flush that deepens over a few minutes to dull reddish brown, most obvious in the stem and at the base. The spore print is white, distinguishing it from the green-spored members of the genus.

Where and when it grows

Chlorophyllum rhacodes favours richer, more disturbed and more sheltered ground than the true Parasol. Typical sites include hedge bottoms, shrubberies, garden borders, compost and leaf heaps, nettle beds, sand dune scrub, and the needle litter of conifer plantations, especially spruce and pine. It is common in parks and on nutrient-enriched soils near habitation, and readily appears in wood-chip mulch.

Fruiting is chiefly from late summer into late autumn, continuing until frost. Fruit bodies are usually gregarious, often in clusters, troops, arcs or full fairy rings, and the same patch may reappear in the same spot for many years. The species is widespread across Europe, is recorded through much of temperate North America and Asia, and has been carried to other regions with landscaping materials.

Ecological role

This is a saprotrophic decomposer of accumulated plant litter. Its mycelium colonises deep leaf mould, needle duff, compost and mulch, digesting cellulose and lignin and converting bulky woody debris into humus. The preference for nitrogen-rich, heavily composted substrates explains why it turns up so reliably in gardens, nursery beds and landscaped ground.

Like other litter saprotrophs it produces long-lived mycelial mats that expand outward year on year, which is why arcs and rings are so characteristic. Fruiting is triggered by autumn rainfall following warm ground temperatures, and the tall stem raises the spore-bearing gills above the litter layer to catch air movement beneath the shrub canopy.

Similar species

The true Parasol, Macrolepiota procera, is taller and slimmer, has a solid dark central disc on the cap, shows conspicuous snakeskin banding on the stem, and its flesh barely changes colour when cut. Chlorophyllum molybdites is very similar in stature and also has a smooth stem, but its gills turn dull green as they mature and it drops a green to grey-green spore print instead of a white one. Chlorophyllum brunneum differs in its abruptly rimmed, disc-like basal bulb and a thinner, single-edged ring, while C. olivieri has drab olive-grey rather than warm brown scales that contrast only weakly with the cap ground.

At a glance a young Shaggy Parasol can suggest a scaly Amanita, but Amanitas have a fixed ring that cannot be slid, cap ornaments consisting of loose, easily wiped warts, and a stem base sheathed in a membranous sac or set in a distinctly rimmed cup. None of them stains saffron then reddish brown when cut.
