A tufted stump mushroom whose hygrophanous cap dries in two tones from the centre out, above a narrow ring and a stem clad below in coarse dark upturned scales.
Overview
Kuehneromyces mutabilis is one of the most familiar clustering fungi of dead broadleaf wood in temperate woodland, forming crowded tufts on stumps and fallen trunks from spring right through to the first hard frosts. Its epithet mutabilis, meaning changeable, refers to the cap: it is strongly hygrophanous, so it loses colour as it loses water, drying pale ochre from the centre outwards while the outer zone stays dark and moist, giving the two-tone banded look that names it in English.
The genus Kuehneromyces sits in the family Strophariaceae alongside Pholiota, Hypholoma, and Stropharia. It is separated from Pholiota by its thinner flesh, smaller stature, hygrophanous cap, and a stem that is scaly only below the ring, and from Hypholoma by having a distinct membranous ring and a brown rather than purple-brown spore print.
Because it fruits repeatedly and over a long season on a single stump, and because its tufts are so densely packed, it is one of the most frequently photographed wood-decay fungi in Europe, and a good species with which to learn the structural characters of the wood-inhabiting Strophariaceae.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2-6 cm across, convex to broadly bell-shaped with a low central umbo, flattening with age. It is smooth, slightly greasy when very wet, and markedly hygrophanous. When fully moist it is a uniform date brown to warm cinnamon; as it dries the centre bleaches to pale ochre or tan while the marginal zone stays dark, producing a distinct two-toned ring pattern that is the species signature. The thin margin is often faintly striate and may hold whitish veil fragments.
Gills
The gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, crowded, and moderately broad. They are pale cream to buff when young, then dull clay, and finally cinnamon brown to rusty ochre as the spores mature.
Stipe
The stipe is 3-8 cm long and 3-8 mm thick, slender, tough, and usually curved because of crowding within the tuft. Its structure is the best confirming character: above the ring it is smooth, dry, and pale buff, while below the ring it is dark brown and clothed in coarse, upturned, recurved dark scales that give it a rough, shaggy, sheathed appearance, becoming almost blackish towards the base. The ring is narrow, membranous, and often stained brown by falling spores, and it may collapse or wear off in old specimens, leaving a distinct ring zone at the top of the scaly region.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, pale watery brown in the cap and tougher and browner in the stem, with a pleasant mild odour. The spore print is ochre-brown to cinnamon brown, not rusty orange and not purple-tinted.
Where and when it grows
Sheathed Woodtuft fruits in dense tufts, sometimes of dozens of fruiting bodies, on stumps, fallen trunks, large branches, and buried wood of broadleaf trees. Birch and beech are among the most frequent hosts, with alder, willow, oak, ash, and hazel also used, and it appears occasionally on conifer wood, particularly in northern regions. It is a fungus of damp deciduous woodland, wooded stream sides, parkland, and any place with rotting hardwood.
The season is long, extending from spring through summer and into late autumn, with the main flushes coming after rain. It is widespread and often abundant across temperate Europe, northern Asia, and North America. Individual stumps can support fruiting for several consecutive years until the wood is fully broken down.
Ecological role
This is a saprotroph causing a white rot in dead hardwood. Its mycelium colonises stumps, fallen trunks, and buried root wood, degrading lignin and cellulose so that the affected wood becomes pale, soft, and fibrous before crumbling into the soil. It is an efficient secondary coloniser, often working through wood that other fungi have already begun to open up.
In woodland ecosystems its role is the recycling of carbon and nutrients locked in dead hardwood, and the softened wood it leaves behind supports invertebrates, provides seedbeds, and holds moisture in the forest floor. The fruiting bodies arise from a shared mycelial mass at a single point, which crowds the stems, curves them outward, and fuses them at the base into the characteristic tight tuft.
Similar species
Galerina marginata is the most similar species in size, colour, and habit, fruiting on wood with a hygrophanous tawny cap and a small ring. The decisive character is the stem: in Galerina marginata the stem below the ring is smooth to finely silky and never bears coarse scales, and it is usually more slender, often in smaller groups or scattered rather than in large crowded tufts, with a rustier spore print. Always check the lower stem of any tufted brown wood mushroom.
The Poplar Fieldcap, Cyclocybe aegerita, is larger, with a paler tan cap that cracks rather than fading in two tones, and a smooth pale stem below its ring. Pholiota species are generally larger with viscid or conspicuously scaly caps, scales on both cap and stem, and rusty brown spore prints. Hypholoma species such as Sulphur Tuft cluster on the same stumps but have a purple-brown spore print and only a cobwebby ring zone, with no membranous ring and no shaggy scales.
