Overview

Lepiota clypeolaria is one of the commonest and most characteristic members of Lepiota, a genus of small to medium scaly-capped agarics in the Agaricaceae with free white gills, a white spore print and a partial veil that leaves a ring or ring zone. The name clypeolaria refers to the shield-like darker disc that remains unbroken at the cap centre while the rest of the surface splits into fibrous scales.

What makes it easy to recognise in the field is not the cap but the stem. Below the vague, cottony ring the stipe is wrapped in a loose woolly-fibrillose sheath, cream to pale ochre, which breaks into shaggy bands and tufts as the fungus grows. The effect is of a slender white stalk wearing a rumpled, oversized woollen stocking, and the veil material tears away readily when handled.

It is a litter-dwelling fungus of woodland floors, appearing in small scattered troops from late summer into autumn. Within the genus it belongs to a group of species with spurred, boat-shaped spores, and separating its close relatives often relies on spore dimensions and the exact colour of the stem wool.

How to identify it

Cap

3-8 cm across, at first ovoid to bell-shaped, expanding to convex or flat with a broad low hump. The centre is a smooth, unbroken shield of ochre-brown to warm tan skin; away from it, the surface splits into small fibrous ochre-brown scales scattered over a whitish to cream fibrillose ground, becoming sparser and paler toward the edge. The margin is characteristically ragged, hung with soft woolly veil fibres.

Gills

Free from the stipe, crowded, fairly broad, soft, white to cream, sometimes with a faint yellowish tint in age, and with finely fringed edges.

Stipe

5-10 cm long and 4-8 mm thick, slender, whitish and smooth above, and below the ring zone conspicuously clothed in a loose, woolly to cottony cream or pale ochre sheath that soon breaks into irregular shaggy bands and patches. The ring itself is indistinct, fibrous and fleeting, often no more than a fuzzy zone where the sheath ends. The base is slightly swollen but never abrupt or rimmed, and there is no volva.

Flesh & spore print

Flesh white, thin, soft, with a faint odour sometimes described as slightly rubbery or earthy. The spore print is white. Microscopically the spores are long, narrow and spurred at one end, giving a characteristic boat or projectile outline that distinguishes this group within the genus.

Where and when it grows

It fruits on the litter layer of woodland, in both broadleaved and coniferous stands, favouring beech, oak, hazel and spruce, and often turning up on richer soils along path edges, in shaded clearings and among moss and leaf drift. It also occurs in parks, churchyards and mature gardens where a good litter layer has built up under trees.

Distribution is broad through Europe, North America and temperate Asia. Fruiting runs from late summer to late autumn, peaking in the wettest weeks of the season. Fruit bodies appear singly or in small scattered groups rather than in tufts, and their slender build means they are easily bent or broken by rain.

Ecological role

The Shield Dapperling is a saprotroph of forest litter. Its mycelium colonises fallen leaves, needles, small twigs and the humus beneath, releasing enzymes that break down cellulose and lignin residues and converting the annual litter fall into soil organic matter and available nutrients.

Most Lepiota species occupy this same niche and are therefore not tied to particular tree partners in the way ectomycorrhizal genera are, which explains why the species can be found under such a wide range of trees. The abundant veil material that clothes the young fruit body probably protects the developing gills from drying and from litter debris in a habitat where fruit bodies must push up through a loose, mobile layer of leaves.

Similar species

Lepiota magnispora is very similar but has a yellower, more strongly ochre-yellow woolly stem sheath and a browner cap disc, and is separated definitively by its notably larger spurred spores. Lepiota ventriosospora is another close relative differing in spore shape and in the deeper ochre tones of the veil.

Lepiota cristata is much smaller and neater, with a white cap bearing concentric rings of small reddish-brown scales, a smooth stem without any woolly sheath, a distinct small ring, and a strong sharp odour. Cystolepiota species are smaller still and coated in a powdery, granular veil rather than woolly fibres, and Chlorophyllum and Macrolepiota species are far larger with thick movable rings.
