Shield Pinkgill Identification Guide

How to recognise Entoloma clypeatum, the springtime pinkgill of hawthorn and blackthorn hedges, from its grey streaky umbonate cap to its salmon spore print. Includes the spring look-alikes that share exactly the same hedge banks.

Where you will be standing

The Shield Pinkgill is a spring fungus of hedgerows, orchards and scrubby field edges, and the setting does half the identification for you. You will be at the base of a hawthorn, a blackthorn thicket, an old plum or apple, or a rose-tangled hedge bank, walking on short grass and moss in April, May or early June, at a time when almost nothing else of any size is up. The fruit bodies come in troops, sometimes in arcs and rings following the drip line of the shrub, and they are the colour of wet slate and old cardboard, so they read as grey lumps in the grass until you crouch. The overall build is solid and rather Tricholoma-like: a firm, broad, umbonate cap on a stout white stalk, with none of the fragility of the small woodland pinkgills.

Reading the cap

The cap is 4-10 cm across, occasionally larger, starting convex with a strongly inrolled margin and expanding to a broad shield shape with a low, blunt central boss - the shape that gives the species its name. Colour runs from pale grey-buff through mouse-grey to a dull greyish brown, and it is markedly hygrophanous, so a specimen half-dried by wind will be pale straw across the outer zone while the umbo stays dark. The surface is dry, matte and faintly silky, and under low light you can see fine radial fibrils streaking outward like brush marks, sometimes with darker watery-looking streaks after rain. The margin becomes wavy and often splits or lobes irregularly in older, expanded specimens. There is no veil, no ring zone and no viscid layer at any stage.

The gills as they age

The gills are the pivot of the identification, and you must read them on more than one specimen because they change. In a young button they are whitish to pale grey and rather nondescript. As the spores mature they take on a dull flesh-pink, then a definite salmon or ham-pink tone that spreads from the deep part of the gill outward. They are moderately crowded, fairly broad, and attached to the stalk with a shallow notch or sinus, frequently running down as a short decurrent tooth. Gill edges are even and concolorous, and the whole gill trama is soft. If you find only young grey-gilled specimens, dig out an older one from the same troop and the pink will be there.

Stalk, base and flesh

The stipe is 4-10 cm tall and up to 2 cm thick, solid and fibrous rather than hollow, and typically slightly curved or twisted where it has pushed through grass roots. It is white to pale grey, longitudinally fibrous-striate with silky lines running the full length, and it often has a faint bloom at the very apex. The base is not bulbous and carries no sac or ring of tissue, just white mycelial felt binding soil and rootlets. Cut the fruit body in half from cap edge to stipe base. The flesh is white, firm and thick in the centre of the cap, thinning quickly toward the margin, and it does not change colour on exposure beyond a slight greying as it dries. Crush a fragment between finger and thumb and smell it immediately: the odour is strongly mealy or farinaceous, like fresh-cut cucumber or damp flour, and it is a genuine field character.

Taking a spore print

Pinkgills are named for their spores and the print is the family test. Trim a mature cap free of its stalk, lay it gills-down on white paper, cover it, and give it six to twelve hours in a cool place. The Shield Pinkgill drops a pink to salmon-brown print - distinctly warmer and more brown-tinged than the clean rose-pink of the wood-dwelling Pluteus species, and utterly different from the white prints of the spring Tricholomataceae. Under a microscope the spores clinch the genus: they are heterodiametric and angular, five- to six-sided nodulose bodies rather than the smooth ellipsoids of most agarics, and once you have seen one field of them you will never confuse the genus again.

Substrate, partnership and season

Unlike most pinkgills, this species does not live on rotting litter. It forms a root partnership with woody members of the rose family, which is why it is so faithfully tied to hawthorn, blackthorn, plum, cherry, apple, pear and rose. That association is a genuine identification character, not a coincidence: if the fruit bodies are nowhere near a rosaceous shrub or tree, the identification is in doubt. The season is narrow and early, essentially the same window as the hawthorn coming into leaf, and it is over by midsummer. The fungus favours base-rich to neutral soils, hedge banks, old orchards, churchyards and scrub margins, and it will often reappear in exactly the same spot year after year.

Separating the look-alikes

Calocybe gambosa, the St George's mushroom, is the great confusion, because it fruits in the same weeks, in the same hedge banks and rings, and has the same mealy smell. Read the gills and the print: Calocybe has crowded, narrow, pure white gills that stay white, a cream-white cap without grey tones, and a white spore print. Any hint of salmon in the gills settles it.

Entoloma sepium shares the rosaceous habitat and the spring season but has a paler, more ochre-cream cap and, decisively, its stipe and cap flesh flush reddish or wine-brown where bruised or cut, which the Shield Pinkgill never does.

Entoloma saundersii is associated with elm rather than hawthorn, is whiter and more silky, and tends to fruit slightly later and in more shaded settings.

Melanoleuca species can match the grey-brown umbonate cap and slender striate stalk, but their gills stay white to cream and they give a white spore print.

Clitopilus prunulus also has pink spores, but it is white, soft and suede-textured, its gills run distinctly down the stalk, and its whole build is squat and asymmetrical.

Pluteus species have pink prints too, but their gills are completely free of the stalk and they fruit from wood, not soil.

Volvariella likewise has free gills plus a membranous sac at the stalk base, which the Shield Pinkgill lacks entirely.
