Short-stemmed Slippery Jack Identification Guide
How to work through Suillus brevipes in the field: the glossy chocolate cap, small yellow pores, and the short white ringless stalk that names it. Includes the ringed and dotted Suillus species that share the same pine stands.
The first impression
You meet this bolete under pines, usually on sandy or gravelly ground where the needle mat is thin - roadside plantations, dune woodland, campground margins, lodgepole and ponderosa stands in the mountains. In wet weather the caps shine from a distance like polished conkers, deep chocolate brown and slick, sitting so low that the cap often rests almost on the needles. Pick one up and the immediate impressions are that the stalk is absurdly short for the size of the cap, that it is clean white with no ring and no obvious speckling, and that the whole fruit body is soft and slightly spongy in the hand. Those three points - short, white, ringless - carry most of the identification.
Reading the cap
The cap is 4-10 cm across, occasionally to 15 cm, convex at first and flattening slowly, keeping a broadly rounded profile. Young caps are strikingly dark: deep chocolate, blackish brown, or dark reddish brown, and they fade with age and sun exposure through cinnamon and tan to dull ochre-buff, so a single troop may present three shades. The surface is distinctly viscid when moist, sticky enough to pick up needles and grit, and it dries to a smooth glossy sheen rather than becoming matte or fibrous. The cuticle peels away easily from the flesh at the margin. Note the negatives carefully: there are no dry fibrils, no scales, no mottled patchwork, and no fragments of veil hanging from the margin - the edge is even and clean.
The pore surface
Underneath is a tube layer, not gills. The pores are small, round and fairly regular, roughly one to two per millimetre, whitish to pale yellow in young buttons and deepening to a duller ochre-yellow as spores mature. The tubes are shallow, only a few millimetres deep, and attached to the stalk either squarely or with a slight decurrent run. Press the pore surface firmly with a thumb: there is no blue reaction, and at most a faint slow brownish or vinaceous discolouration where damaged. Look also for what is absent - young pores do not bead with milky droplets, a habit that is characteristic of a close relative.
Stalk, base and veil
The stipe is the name character: 2-6 cm tall, sometimes shorter than the cap is wide, and 1-2.5 cm thick, cylindric or slightly swollen below. When young it is clean white throughout, dry, and smooth; with age it yellows from the apex downward and may develop scattered small brownish dots or smudges on the upper half, but never the dense, conspicuous, dark glandular speckling of some relatives. There is no ring and no ring zone, because there is no partial veil to leave one. The base tapers or is bluntly rounded, with white mycelium in the sand, and there is no bulb, sac or rooting extension.
Flesh and colour change
Slice the fruit body from cap to base. The flesh is soft, thick and white to pale yellow, becoming more yellow in the stalk apex and near the tubes with age. On exposure it is essentially unchanging: expect at most a slow, weak yellowing or a faint brownish dulling over several minutes, and no blue, green or red flush anywhere. That stability is a genuine character worth testing every time, because several superficially similar boletes in the same forests do change. The odour and the overall texture are mild and unremarkable, and old fruit bodies become sodden and quickly colonised by insect larvae.
Taking a spore print
Cut the short stalk off flush, set the cap pores-down on white paper and cover it. A mature cap deposits heavily in a few hours. The print is cinnamon-brown to dull olive-brown, the standard colour for the slippery jack group and quite different from the white prints of gilled fungi or the olive-brown-to-blackish prints of some other bolete groups. Microscopically the spores are smooth, thin-walled and narrowly ellipsoid to subfusiform, typically around 7-10 by 3-4 micrometres, and the cap cuticle is built of gelatinised interwoven hyphae, which is exactly why the surface is so slimy in wet weather.
Substrate, partners and season
This is a root-partner fungus tied specifically to pines, and particularly to two- and three-needle pines. In western North America it is a constant associate of lodgepole and ponderosa pine, and it also appears with Monterey pine, jack pine and various eastern hard pines, including in planted shelterbelts and amenity plantings well outside natural pine range. It favours sandy, gravelly or otherwise poor soils and thin duff, and it fruits gregariously, often in large numbers along path edges and under isolated planted pines. The season is late summer through autumn in most of its range and extends deep into winter in mild coastal areas. If the associated tree is a spruce, larch, fir or a five-needle white pine, reconsider the identification.
Separating the look-alikes
Suillus luteus is the classic ringed slippery jack and the most important comparison. It carries a conspicuous membranous ring on the stalk, often banded purple-brown, and above that ring the stalk is covered in dense dark glandular dots. This species has neither.
Suillus granulatus and the closely allied Suillus weaverae are also ringless, but their caps are paler ochre to cinnamon rather than chocolate, their stalks are proportionally much longer and are conspicuously covered in brown to reddish glandular dots, and their young pores exude milky droplets that dry to sticky brown spots.
Suillus pungens starts with a mottled patchwork cap of white, olive and grey before turning brown, and has a strongly dotted stalk and a pungent odour.
Suillus placidus and other white-capped species partner with five-needle pines and have pale, almost ivory caps.
Suillus tomentosus has a dry, fibrillose to woolly ochre cap, dark specks on the surface, and flesh that stains blue when cut - the colour change alone separates it.
Larch-associated Suillus species have yellow caps or radially arranged, elongated pores and grow only under larch.
Dry-capped boletes in other genera can be ruled out on sight: none of them combine a viscid glossy cap with small yellow pores and a naked short white stalk.
