Overview

The Silky Pinkgill is one of the commonest small brown mushrooms of mown and grazed grassland across temperate Europe. Where waxcaps demand ancient turf, this species is far less fussy and turns up on ordinary lawns, playing fields, verges and pasture.

It belongs to the section of Entoloma sometimes treated as Nolanea, comprising slender, brown, non-fleshy species with conical to convex hygrophanous caps and fragile, fibrous stipes. All share the genus hallmarks of pink spore deposits and angular spores.

In the field its identity rests on a combination of features rather than any single one: dark date to sepia brown cap when moist, dramatic pallor as it dries, a silky sheen on cap and stipe, a strong farinaceous smell and gills that turn pink as spores ripen.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 2-5 cm across, convex to flattened with a low broad umbo, sometimes slightly depressed at the centre in age. When moist it is dark sepia to date brown and translucent-striate almost to the disc; as it dries it fades markedly from the centre outwards to pale grey-brown or beige, taking on a distinctly silky, faintly shining surface.

Gills

Gills are adnate to sinuate, moderately spaced, at first whitish to pale grey-brown, then clearly flushed salmon-pink as the spores mature. The gill edge is even and concolorous, without any darker margin.

Stipe

The stipe is 3-6 cm tall and slender, cylindrical, hollow and brittle, grey-brown and covered with silvery silky longitudinal fibrils that give it a polished look. The base is often white-downy where it grips the turf. There is no ring or volva.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is thin and brownish, watery when wet, with a strong farinaceous smell that is one of the best confirming characters. The spore print is pink, and the spores are angular with five to seven facets.

Where and when it grows

Silky Pinkgill grows on the ground in short grassland of almost any kind: garden lawns, playing fields, roadside verges, churchyards, grazed pasture, dune grassland and grassy woodland rides. Unlike the waxcaps that often share these places, it is tolerant of moderately improved and disturbed turf, which explains its abundance.

Fruiting starts as early as late spring and continues through summer and autumn, with the biggest flushes after autumn rain. It is common and widespread throughout Europe and is also recorded across northern Asia and North America. Fruitbodies typically appear scattered or in small loose groups rather than in tight clusters.

Ecological role

This species is a saprotroph of grassland soil and thatch, breaking down dead grass roots, leaf bases and accumulated organic matter in the upper few centimetres of turf. Its saprotrophic habit is the reason it can colonise recently created or regularly disturbed grassland where mycorrhizal and biotrophic grassland fungi cannot survive.

The mycelium spreads through the root mat and fruits repeatedly through a long season whenever moisture allows. Because it is so widespread and undemanding, it carries little weight as an indicator species in grassland quality surveys, unlike the waxcaps and the scarcer pinkgills it may grow beside.

Similar species

Entoloma conferendum, the Star Pinkgill, is very similar in size, colour and habitat but has a more conical, silvery-streaked cap and, decisively, cross-shaped (cruciform) spores rather than the many-sided angular spores of E. sericeum.

Entoloma sericeoides and other members of the sericeum complex differ in subtle cap and spore details and often require microscopy. Small brown Panaeolus and Psathyrella species in the same lawns have black or dark brown spore prints and mottled or rapidly deliquescing gills. Grassland Inocybe species have radially fibrillose to cracked caps and rusty to snuff-brown spore prints. A pink print plus a farinaceous smell points firmly to Entoloma.

What does hygrophanous mean here?
The cap changes colour dramatically as it loses water. Moist caps are dark date-brown and striate; drying caps pale from the centre outward to buff or grey-brown with a silky sheen, so one troop can show several apparent colours at once.
How is it separated from the Star Pinkgill?
Reliably only by microscope: Star Pinkgill has cross-shaped spores, Silky Pinkgill has ordinary many-sided angular spores. In the field, Star Pinkgill tends to be more conical with a more silvery, streaked cap.
Does it need old undisturbed grassland?
No. It is a soil saprotroph and grows happily on ordinary lawns, playing fields and verges, which is why it is far more frequent than the waxcaps that share the same turf.
What colour are the gills?
