A tall pale mushroom of compost and cultivated ground with a slightly greasy grey cap, free gills that turn salmon pink, no ring, and a large white sac at the stem base.
Overview
Volvopluteus gloiocephalus is a conspicuous mushroom of rich disturbed ground, often appearing suddenly in numbers on compost heaps, ploughed stubble, and freshly spread wood chip. It has carried several names over the years, including Volvariella gloiocephala and Volvariella speciosa, and modern molecular work moved it and a small number of relatives into the genus Volvopluteus, distinguished from Volvariella proper by its viscid cap cuticle and larger spores.
Like the rest of the family Pluteaceae it has completely free gills and a pink spore deposit. What sets Volvopluteus and Volvariella apart from Pluteus is the universal veil: the young fruiting body is fully enclosed in a membrane which tears as the mushroom elongates, leaving a substantial sac around the stem base. There is no partial veil, so the stem is left clean and ringless.
It is one of the larger mushrooms of open cultivated land, and its habit of appearing in loose troops on bare enriched soil makes it a familiar sight around farmyards, allotments, and municipal mulch beds across the temperate world.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 5-15 cm across, occasionally larger, egg-shaped at first, then bell-shaped and finally broadly convex to flat with a low broad umbo. The surface is smooth and distinctly greasy or sticky to the touch when damp, drying to a silky sheen with faint radial streaks. Colour ranges from white through pale ash grey to grey-brown, usually darkest at the centre; the margin is thin and can split radially in dry weather.
Gills
The gills are free, crowded, broad and ventricose, with finely fringed edges. They are white in the button stage and shift through pale pink to a deep salmon or flesh pink as the spores ripen, which can happen quickly on a warm day.
Stipe
The stipe is tall and slender relative to the cap, 5-20 cm long, white to off-white, smooth or minutely silky-downy, solid, and tapering gradually upwards from a somewhat swollen base. It carries no ring and no ring zone. The base is enclosed in a large, thick, persistent, sac-like volva that is white to greyish, with a free upper rim that is often lobed or split into two or three flaps.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white, soft, and does not change colour appreciably on cutting. The odour is faintly earthy or slightly radish-like. The spore print is pink to salmon, the deposit sometimes appearing brownish pink when thick.
Where and when it grows
This species is bound to nutrient-rich, disturbed, open substrates rather than to woodland. Typical sites include garden compost heaps, manure and silage piles, arable stubble left after cutting, allotments, nursery beds, fresh wood chip and bark mulch, sawdust piles, and roadside soil that has been recently worked. It also turns up in greenhouse beds and on the enriched margins of pathways.
Fruiting runs from late spring through to late autumn, with the largest flushes in warm damp spells, and it can appear only weeks after fresh material is laid down. Distribution is essentially worldwide in temperate and warm temperate regions, including Europe, North America, Asia, Australasia, and southern Africa, its spread helped along by the transport of composts and mulches.
Ecological role
Volvopluteus gloiocephalus is a saprotroph and an opportunistic early coloniser of freshly enriched organic material. It has no mycorrhizal partners, which is why it is equally at home in a farmyard, a flowerbed, or a stubble field with no trees in sight. Its mycelium exploits partially decomposed straw, manure, leaf litter, and wood chip, and it contributes to the rapid turnover of these materials into humus.
The fruiting cycle is quick. Mycelium colonises a fresh substrate, then produces small egg-like primordia enclosed in a universal veil. As the stem extends, the veil tears near the apex and remains as the basal sac. The cap expands, sheds its pink spores over a day or two, and then softens and collapses. Because colonisation is fast but the substrate is soon exhausted or taken over by competitors, populations at a given site tend to be brief and are often replaced by other decomposers in following seasons.
Similar species
The Paddy Straw Mushroom, Volvariella volvacea, is the closest relative in general form but is smaller, distinctly grey-brown to sooty, with a dry silky-fibrillose rather than greasy cap, a darker brown volva, and a tropical distribution on straw. Volvariella bombycina is white and conspicuously shaggy-hairy and grows from wounds in living broadleaf trunks rather than from soil or compost.
White Amanita species can look similar at a distance because they too have a sac-like volva. They separate cleanly on gill and spore colour: Amanita gills remain white or cream and the spore print is white, whereas this species has salmon-pink gills and a pink print. Most Amanita species also carry a ring on the stem, which Volvopluteus never does, and they grow from soil in partnership with tree roots rather than on compost. Large Agaricus species have free gills too, but their gills darken to chocolate and finally blackish brown, they give a dark brown spore print, and they have a membranous ring but no volva.
