A firm, slate-grey to grey-brown scaber stalk of poplars, with a long rooting stem, dark scabers, and cut flesh that reddens then turns blue-green at the base.
Overview
The Slate Bolete is a substantial Leccinum whose muted grey and grey-brown colouring separates it from the brightly capped members of the genus and whose exceptionally firm flesh gives it its scientific epithet, meaning somewhat hard. In young fruit bodies the cap is genuinely tough and rubbery to the touch, quite different from the soft, spongy texture of the brown birch bolete.
It is a poplar specialist, and as poplars are widely planted in cities, along roads, and in shelterbelts, this species turns up in far more urban and artificial settings than most boletes. Rows of grey poplar or white poplar along a suburban avenue can produce good numbers of it, sometimes pushing through hard-packed ground at the edge of pavements.
Along with the mottled and the white birch boletes, it belongs to the subset of scaber stalks that show a blue-green reaction in the base of the stem when cut. Combining that reaction with a slate-toned cap, a long tapering stem, and poplar overhead makes for a fairly straightforward identification.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 6 to 20 cm across, thick-fleshed and convex, expanding slowly. Colour is a dull grey-brown, slate-grey, or greyish-fawn, sometimes with a faint pinkish or vinaceous flush and darker mottling. The surface is dry to slightly greasy, smooth or minutely felted, and can become finely wrinkled or pitted as it expands.
Pores
Tubes are pale cream to whitish, becoming greyish-buff or dingy ochre with age. Pores are small, round, and crowded, depressed around the stem, and slowly stain brownish or ochre where pressed.
Stipe
The stem is long and often deeply rooting, 8 to 20 cm tall, tapering upward from a swollen base that may push well down into the soil. The surface is whitish to pale grey and is covered with scabers that darken from pale brown to dark brown or blackish, becoming coarser toward the base. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white and very firm, especially in young specimens. Cut surfaces first turn pinkish or vinaceous-red, particularly in the stem, then grey and eventually darker, while the flesh of the extreme stem base characteristically stains blue-green. The spore print is ochre-brown.
Where and when it grows
This species partners with poplars, including grey poplar, white poplar, black poplar, and hybrid cultivars, as well as aspen. It fruits in parks and gardens, along suburban streets and roadsides, in poplar plantations and shelterbelts, on riverbanks, and in wet woodland where poplars are established.
It occurs across much of Europe and temperate Asia and has spread with planted poplars into other regions. Fruiting runs from midsummer through autumn, and because the stem roots deeply the fruit body can emerge from surprisingly compacted or gravelly ground, often at the base of a tree or under a grassy verge nearby.
Ecological role
Leccinum duriusculum is ectomycorrhizal with poplar and aspen. Its hyphae wrap the fine roots and radiate outward into the soil, functioning as an extended nutrient-absorbing organ for the tree while drawing carbon from it in return. Poplars are fast-growing, water-demanding trees, and their fungal partners help supply the mineral nutrients that rapid growth requires.
Because the species is content with planted and urban poplars, it is a useful reminder that mycorrhizal networks establish readily in artificial landscapes. Its deeply rooting stem base allows the fruit body to originate from mycelium well below the compacted surface layers typical of roadside and park soils, which may explain why it tolerates such sites better than many woodland fungi.
Similar species
Leccinum scabrum is similar in colour but has softer, more easily waterlogged flesh, a less rooting stem, no blue-green base reaction, and grows with birch rather than poplar. Leccinum variicolor is also birch-associated and shows the blue-green stem base, but its cap is distinctly mottled with pale and dark patches and its flesh is far softer.
Leccinum aurantiacum shares the poplar habitat but is immediately separated by its bright orange-red cap. Leccinellum pseudoscabrum has comparably dull colours but a strongly wrinkled and pitted cap, blackening flesh without the blue-green base, and hazel or hornbeam as its partner. Firmness of flesh, the deep-rooting stem, and the slate-toned cap under poplar are the practical combination for L. duriusculum.
