A tall, elegantly slim parasol whose pale cap carries a distinctly pointed nipple at the centre and only fine, sparse scales. Its stem is slender and faintly fibrillose rather than boldly snakeskin-patterned.
Overview
Macrolepiota mastoidea is the graceful cousin of the great parasol mushrooms. Everything about it is drawn out and finely made: a long thin stem, a cap that opens almost flat like a stretched umbrella, and a sharply protruding central papilla that gives the species its name - mastoides means nipple-shaped.
The genus Macrolepiota, in the Agaricaceae, is defined by large fruiting bodies with free white gills, a white spore print, a complex double ring that slides on the stem, and a cap cuticle that breaks into scales as the cap expands. In M. mastoidea the scaling is much finer and more scattered than in the common parasol, so the cap looks paler and cleaner, with the intact brown disc standing out as a dark point at the summit.
Taxonomy here is unsettled: several closely similar slender parasols with pointed umbos, including material long called Macrolepiota gracilenta and M. konradii, have been merged, split and re-merged over the years. Field guides generally treat the group as a set of variants distinguished by the density of cap scales and the degree of stem banding.
How to identify it
Cap
6-12 cm across, occasionally larger, egg-shaped when young and expanding to almost flat, always with a prominent, sharply conical central papilla that projects like a nipple above the disc. The ground colour is pale cream to greyish-buff, overlain by small, flat, ochre to pale brown scales that are sparse and become smaller toward the margin; the disc itself remains an unbroken smooth brown cap of cuticle. The margin is thin, often finely fringed with veil fragments, and may be slightly striate in wet weather.
Gills
Free from the stem and separated by a distinct collar, crowded, broad, soft, white to pale cream, sometimes with a faint pinkish cast in age. Bruising produces at most a faint brownish stain along the edge.
Stipe
8-16 cm tall but only 5-12 mm thick, hollow, straight, tapering upward from a distinctly bulbous base. The surface is whitish to pale buff, smooth or covered with faint fine fibrils that may form indistinct pale bands - never the bold dark snakeskin girdling of the common parasol. The ring is white, membranous, double-edged and movable, though thinner and less elaborate than in larger relatives.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh thin, white and soft, unchanging or at most faintly discolouring when cut. The spore print is white, and the spores are large, smooth, thick-walled ellipsoids with a germ pore, dextrinoid in iodine reagents.
Where and when it grows
The Slender Parasol favours open, well-drained ground: unimproved grassland, pasture, downland, dune grassland, roadside verges, woodland rides and the grassy margins of broadleaf woods. It shows a preference for calcareous or sandy soils and is often found scattered among short turf where the soil is warm, sometimes forming loose arcs or rings.
It is widespread across Europe, with comparable material reported from North Africa, Asia and North America, though the exact limits of the species are blurred by the taxonomic confusion within the group. Fruiting begins in late summer and continues into mid-autumn, following spells of rain after warm weather.
Ecological role
Like the other large parasols, this species is a soil saprotroph rather than a partner of trees. Its mycelium works through the humus layer and root thatch of grassland and woodland edge, decomposing accumulated dead plant material and recycling nitrogen and minerals back into the turf. This independence from tree roots is why parasols appear in fields and verges where mycorrhizal species cannot grow.
The tall stem serves an obvious purpose in grassland: it lifts the flat, wide cap above the sward so that the white spores can be caught by moving air. Colonies persist for years in undisturbed turf and may expand outward slowly, producing scattered troops or partial fairy rings in the same spot each autumn.
Similar species
Macrolepiota procera is much larger and its stem is boldly patterned with dark brown snakeskin bands; its umbo is broad and rounded rather than a sharp nipple, and its cap scales are coarse and shaggy. Macrolepiota excoriata has a paler, nearly smooth cap whose cuticle tears into a frayed, ragged margin, and it lacks the pointed papilla.
Chlorophyllum rhacodes is stockier, with coarse upturned scales, a clubbed stem base and flesh that reddens when cut. Chlorophyllum molybdites, found in lawns in warm regions, is broad-umboned and drops a green spore print rather than a white one. Smaller Lepiota species such as L. clypeolaria have woolly stems and simple, non-movable ring zones.
