Slippery Jill Identification Guide
A field walkthrough for recognising Suillus salmonicolor in pine plantations, from its glue-like cap slime and glandular stipe dots to the salmon tint hidden in the stipe base.
What You Are Standing In When You Find It
Almost every encounter with Slippery Jill happens under pine. Picture a planted stand of red pine or jack pine, a windbreak of Scots pine along a field edge, or the softer margins of a mixed wood where a few two- and three-needle pines lean out over the path. The floor is a springy brown mat of fallen needles, the light is low, and what catches your eye first is a shine. Even on a dry afternoon these caps look wet.
The second clue arrives before you have even crouched down: needles, bark flakes and small leaves are stuck to the cap as though someone had glued them on. That is exactly what has happened. The cap carries a thick, tacky coating that traps litter, so a mature specimen often looks like a small brown dome wearing a collage. Fruit bodies come up scattered or in loose troops, sometimes in a rough arc, and many push up half-buried so that only a slick patch of cap breaks the surface of the needle duff.
Getting to the genus is easy once you have seen a few: a bolete with a slimy cap, a stipe speckled with dots rather than covered in a raised net, and an obvious attachment to pines. Getting from Suillus to this particular species comes down to three deliberate observations - the veil, the dots, and the colour inside the base of the stipe.
Reading the Cap
Caps run roughly 3 to 10 cm across. They start as a low convex button and flatten to a broad dome, rarely becoming truly plane. Colour sits in the warm ochre to dull orange-brown range, sometimes with a distinctly cinnamon or reddish-tawny wash, and typically pales toward the margin. Wipe the slime aside with a leaf and the surface underneath is smooth and unbroken, without scales, fibrils or granules.
The slime layer itself is worth pausing on. In wet weather it is genuinely glutinous, stringing slightly if you touch it and lift a finger. In dry weather it dries to a varnished, sticky film that still grabs debris. On young specimens look at the cap margin: it often carries hanging fragments of the partial veil, appearing as a fringe of soft whitish or buff tissue that later shrivels away.
The Pore Surface
Turn the cap over. Suillus species have tubes, not gills, and here they are pale yellow to dull ochre-yellow when young, slowly ageing to a duller brownish-yellow or olive-tinged tan. The tube mouths are small, angular and often faintly arranged in radiating rows, which gives the surface a subtly ribbed look under a hand lens. Attachment is adnate to slightly decurrent, so the tube layer runs a short way down onto the top of the stipe.
On fresh young specimens the pore mouths frequently bead with pale milky droplets. Those droplets dry down and leave scattered brownish flecks across the pore surface - a small but useful confirmation. Pressing a fingertip into the pores produces at most a dull brownish stain, never a strong blue.
The Veil and the Ring
This is the character that separates Slippery Jill from the dotted-stiped Suillus species that have no veil at all. Young buttons are sealed by a thick, soft partial veil stretched from the cap margin to the stipe. As the cap expands the veil tears and collapses into a conspicuous ring - and it is not a dry papery ring. It is baggy, thick, often gelatinous or slimy to the touch, and it tends to slump into a sagging collar or a smeared band rather than standing out as a neat skirt. With age it darkens and can look like a brownish sticky girdle glued to the stipe.
The Stipe and Its Dots
The stipe is 4 to 10 cm long, fairly slender, more or less equal or slightly swollen below, and it is not netted. Instead, look closely at the surface above the ring and you will see small resinous glandular dots scattered over a pale yellow to whitish-yellow ground. Young dots are pale and inconspicuous; with age and handling they darken to brown, purple-brown or almost blackish, so an old stipe can look speckled or streaked with dark points. Below the ring the stipe is usually paler, less obviously dotted and often smeared with the remains of the veil.
The Base and the Flesh
Now do the one cut that settles the identification. Slice the whole fruit body from cap to base lengthways. The cap flesh is soft and pale yellow. The stipe flesh is yellow above - and in the lower stipe, especially in the base itself, it is washed with a distinct salmon-pink, coral or orange-pink tone. That salmon base is the origin of the epithet salmonicolor and is the single most reliable feature in the field. It is strongest in fresh, well-grown specimens and can be faint in very young buttons or waterlogged old ones, so cut more than one.
The flesh may darken slightly to a dull tan where it is exposed, but there is no dramatic bruising reaction and no blueing.
Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Cut the stipe off flush and set the cap pore-side down on white paper. Because the cap is slimy, put it on a scrap of paper you can discard, and expect the cap itself to stick. Cover it with an upturned cup to keep air movement and drying out of the equation, and leave it three to eight hours or overnight in a cool spot. The deposit is a dull cinnamon-brown, sometimes with an olive or clay cast. That brown print rules out a great many orange-brown capped agarics and confirms you are in the bolete camp; combined with the dotted stipe and the pine association it puts you firmly in Suillus.
Substrate, Partners and Season
Slippery Jill is ectomycorrhizal and its partners are pines with needles in bundles of two or three - red pine, jack pine, Scots pine and their relatives. It fruits from soil and needle litter, never from wood, and it appears from midsummer through autumn, flushing hard a few days after soaking rain. Plantations, roadside pine rows, sandy pine barrens and reclaimed ground planted with pine are all typical. If you are under spruce, fir or a five-needle white pine, look for a different Suillus.
Separating It from the Nearest Look-alikes
Suillus granulatus and its allies share the slimy cap, dotted stipe and pine habitat, but they have no partial veil at all - no ring, no baggy collar, no veil fringe on the cap margin - and no salmon tone in the stipe base.
Suillus luteus has a strong ring, but it is a different ring: membranous, firm, often with a purple-brown or violaceous underside, standing out as a proper skirt rather than sagging as a gelatinous band. Its cap is usually a darker chocolate or purple-brown, and its stipe base is whitish, not salmon.
Suillus cothurnatus, a southern pine associate, is genuinely close and also has a veil, but its ring tends to form a more banded, sheath-like collar and the salmon base colour is weaker or absent.
Suillus acidus and the paler veiled species have whitish to straw-coloured caps rather than the warm orange-brown of Slippery Jill, again without the salmon base.
Finally, do not confuse the glandular dots of Suillus with the raised reticulum of some other boletes, or the shaggy scaly stipes of Leccinum. Dots are flat, resinous and darken with age; a net is a raised mesh; scabers are tufted and stand proud of the surface.
A Working Sequence
Under pine, slimy cap, litter stuck to the surface, yellow angular pores, dotted stipe, baggy gelatinous ring, salmon-tinted stipe base, dull cinnamon-brown print. Run that list in order and Slippery Jill separates cleanly from every other Suillus you are likely to meet in the same plantation.
