Small Stagshorn Identification Guide
A practical route to recognising Calocera cornea, the little rubbery orange spindles that line the cracks of bare hardwood, and how texture alone separates it from coral fungi.
The First Impression
Small Stagshorn is one of those fungi you notice as a colour before you notice a shape. You are walking a damp wood in autumn, stepping over a fallen beech or oak trunk that has lost most of its bark, and a line of orange pinpricks runs along the pale grey wood. Get down to the log and the pinpricks resolve into dozens of tiny upright spindles, each only a few millimetres tall, standing in rows along the cracks and splits of the timber.
They almost always come in numbers. A good log carries scores or hundreds, following the grain, crowding into the seams where water sits, occasionally fusing at the base into little clusters of two or three. The overall effect is a dotted orange stitching across the wood.
The second impression, and the one that matters most, is textural. Touch one. It is not soft and fleshy like a coral fungus and not brittle like a small club fungus. It is rubbery, elastic and slightly greasy, closer to a gummy sweet than to mushroom tissue. That single sensation puts you in the jelly fungi and saves you a long detour through the club and coral genera.
Reading the Fruit Body
Individual fruit bodies are 2 to 10 mm tall, occasionally reaching 15 mm in sheltered damp conditions, and 1 to 2 mm thick. The shape is an awl or a narrow spindle: broadest a little above the base, tapering to a pointed or slightly blunted tip. Most are simple and unbranched. A minority split near the apex into two or three short prongs, which is where the stagshorn name comes from, but if you are looking at a richly antlered structure with many branches you are almost certainly looking at a different species.
Colour ranges from pale yellow through egg-yolk to a warm orange, occasionally with a slightly translucent, waxy look when fully hydrated. In sunlight the surface can appear varnished. As the fruit body dries it shrinks dramatically, darkens to a hard orange-red or almost brick-coloured fleck, and can look like a resin droplet stuck to the wood. Wet it again and it swells and revives, which is a good confirmation test - cut a chip of wood with dried specimens, wet it, and watch them plump back up over a few minutes.
The entire outer surface is fertile. There is no separate cap, no gills, no pores, no defined stipe, and no ring. Under a lens the surface is smooth, matte to slightly glossy, without granules or hairs.
The Base and the Interior
Look at the point of attachment. Each spindle sits on a small, narrowed, often darker or blackish foot that is rooted into the wood surface rather than sitting on top of it. If you pare away a sliver of wood with a knife you will see that the base continues into the timber as a small anchoring plug. This rooting habit is normal for the genus and helps distinguish it from surface jellies that simply sit on the substrate.
Cut a fruit body lengthways with a razor or a fingernail. The interior is uniform, gelatinous-tough and the same colour throughout or slightly paler, with no distinct rind, no hollow core and no separate flesh layers. There is no colour change on cutting, no latex, and no bruising reaction. The cut edge behaves elastically: it compresses and springs back rather than crumbling.
Texture as a Diagnostic Test
Because the fungus is so small, texture does more work here than measurement. Take one specimen between thumb and forefinger and bend it. Small Stagshorn flexes through a right angle and returns to shape. Squeeze it and it deforms and rebounds. Try the same with a Clavaria or Clavulinopsis club of similar size and it snaps cleanly with an audible break, leaving a chalky white interior. Try it with a Tremella and it is soft and slack, collapsing rather than springing.
That three-way texture comparison - elastic, brittle or slack - is the single most efficient field test in this group.
Spore Print and What It Tells You
A spore print from a fungus a few millimetres tall requires a little staging. Cut out a small block of wood carrying a dense stand of fruit bodies, invert it over a sheet of dark glass or black paper with a matchstick propping one edge, and cover the whole arrangement with a container to keep the humidity up. Leave it overnight, and preferably longer, because a fungus this small deposits slowly. The print is white to very pale yellowish and will be visible only as a faint bloom.
More usefully, the spore deposit gives you material for a microscope. The genus Calocera has a decisive microscopic character: the basidia are forked into two long prongs, giving them a tuning-fork appearance quite unlike the four-sterigmate club-shaped basidia of coral and club fungi. The spores themselves are sausage-shaped and usually develop a single cross-wall at maturity. If you have any access to a lens above 400x, a squash mount of a single spindle settles the family question in seconds.
Substrate and Season
Small Stagshorn is a wood decayer, and it is specific about the state of the wood. It wants dead hardwood - beech, oak, birch, hornbeam, ash and similar broadleaf timber - that has lost its bark and been weathered enough to grey and crack. Fallen trunks, large limbs on the ground, cut stumps, sawn log stacks and split-rail fencing all serve. Wood in contact with damp ground produces the best colonies.
It is not fussy about season. Fruit bodies are present through much of the year and are most conspicuous from late summer to late autumn, but a mild damp winter spell will bring them out, and dried specimens persist for months waiting to revive. Because the fungus is drought-tolerant in its dried state, it is one of the more reliable finds in a dry season - just wet the log and wait.
Ecologically it is a saprotroph, breaking down the cellulose and lignin of the outer wood layers and contributing to the slow reduction of fallen timber to soil. Its habit of colonising the cracks means it is often among the pioneer visible fungi on newly exposed heartwood.
Separating It from the Look-alikes
Calocera viscosa is the species most often confused with it, but the differences are clear once you have both in mind. Viscosa is much larger, 3 to 10 cm tall, richly and repeatedly branched into a small antler or coral shape, deep egg-yellow to orange, and it grows on conifer wood with a conspicuous rooting yellow base that often pulls out with a plug of wood attached. Cornea is small, mostly unbranched, and lives on hardwood.
Calocera pallidospathulata has flattened, spatula-shaped to club-shaped fruit bodies in paler cream to dull yellow tones, a different silhouette from the narrow awls of cornea.
Dacrymyces stillatus shares the colour, texture and habitat but not the shape: it forms soft orange cushions, blobs and irregular discs pressed to the wood, never upright spindles.
Clavulinopsis and Clavaria species can be yellow and spindle-like, but they grow from soil, moss and grassland rather than from bare wood, and their flesh is dry and brittle rather than elastic.
Typhula and Macrotyphula species are whitish and threadlike, usually on leaf litter or twigs, and they too snap rather than flex.
Finally, resin droplets and insect-secreted material on weathered logs can mimic dried Small Stagshorn quite convincingly. The wetting test resolves it: fungal tissue swells and softens, resin does not.
A Working Sequence
Barkless hardwood, rows of small orange spindles along the cracks, rubbery elastic texture, mostly unbranched with occasional forked tips, small dark rooting base, revival on wetting. Six observations and Small Stagshorn is settled without a microscope.
