Smith's Amanita Identification Guide

A step-by-step field read of Amanita smithiana in Pacific Northwest conifer duff, focusing on its cottony universal veil, rooting tapered base and free white gills.

The Setting and the First Impression

Smith's Amanita is an autumn fungus of western North American conifer forest, and the classic encounter is on well-drained ground under Douglas-fir, often with hemlock and pine nearby, on a slope where the duff is deep and springy. You are usually looking at needle litter rather than leafy humus, and the fruit bodies frequently push up half-buried, so the first thing you see is a pale hump lifting a lid of needles and moss.

The first impression is of something large, solid and white. This is a stocky, heavy mushroom - a cap the size of a fist or larger on a thick, firm stipe - and it looks powdery or shaggy rather than smooth. Fruit bodies occur singly or scattered, occasionally a few together, and they emerge slowly, so a single patch may show buttons, half-expanded specimens and fully open caps at the same time.

Brush the litter away from the base before you do anything else. The underground portion is where several of the decisive characters live, and levering the mushroom out by the stipe destroys exactly the tissue you need. Dig around it with your fingers or a knife and lift the whole structure intact.

Reading the Cap

Caps run roughly 5 to 15 cm across and occasionally larger, starting as a firm rounded button and expanding to broadly convex and eventually nearly flat, sometimes with a low central hump. The ground colour is white to creamy white, discolouring to pale buff, dingy tan or faint pinkish-brown with age and in wet weather, particularly at the centre.

The surface is dry, never slimy, and it carries the remains of the universal veil as soft, cottony to felty patches and low wart-like flakes scattered irregularly across the cap. These are not firm pyramidal warts glued down hard; they are soft, floccose and easily wiped away with a thumb, and rain often removes them entirely from the disc while leaving them near the margin. The cap edge frequently hangs with ragged veil fragments, giving an untidy fringed outline.

The Gills

Turn the cap over carefully. The gills are white to cream, sometimes with a faint pinkish or buff cast in age, close to crowded, and moderately broad. Attachment is the crucial detail: they are free from the stipe or at most very narrowly attached, so a gap runs around the top of the stipe when you cut the mushroom in half. Short gills of several lengths are interspersed between the full-length ones.

Under a lens the gill edges look minutely fluffy or floccose rather than smooth and even. Damage produces no milk, no strong staining and no rusty discolouration.

Stipe, Ring and Base

The stipe is 5 to 15 cm long and thick, often 1.5 to 3 cm at the apex, solid, white, and typically widening downward before narrowing again into the ground. Above the ring zone the surface is smooth to finely mealy; below it, the stipe is decorated with soft cottony scales, shaggy patches and floccose bands.

The ring is easy to miss because it is poorly formed. It is a fragile, cottony, sometimes barely differentiated collar of veil tissue near the top of the stipe, and it frequently disintegrates into a vague fibrous zone or falls apart as the cap expands. If you are looking for a neat persistent skirt, you will not find one - and that absence is informative.

The base is the single most characteristic feature. Instead of a free membranous sac, the universal veil forms a friable, powdery to scaly covering on a swollen, spindle-shaped or abruptly enlarged bulb that then tapers downward into a distinct rooting point driven into the duff. Small recurved cottony scales and a ragged rim of veil tissue sit around the top of that bulb. The overall silhouette of the extracted mushroom is a carrot or spindle rather than a bulb sitting in a cup.

Flesh, Cut Surfaces and Odour

Split the mushroom lengthways from the centre of the cap to the tip of the root. The flesh is white and firm throughout, thick over the gills, and either unchanging on exposure or slowly developing a faint tan or dull pinkish tone in the stipe base after some minutes. There is no blueing, no reddening and no latex.

Smell the cut surface. Collections are commonly described as having a distinctly chlorine-like or bleachy odour, sometimes with an unpleasant sweetish undertone that strengthens as the specimen ages in a bag. It is not the spicy, aromatic, cinnamon-and-pine fragrance of Tricholoma. Odour on its own is never conclusive, but combined with the rooting base it is very useful.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe flush with the gills and lay the cap gill-side down on black paper or a dark tile - a white print is invisible on white paper. Cover with a bowl and leave for several hours or overnight in a cool place. The deposit is white.

That white print, combined with free gills, a universal veil that leaves debris on the cap, and a partial veil, places the mushroom in Amanita and immediately rules out the brown-spored and pink-spored genera that produce similar-sized white mushrooms. If you have iodine reagent, the spores of this group react amyloid, turning blue-grey, which further separates them from several white-spored genera whose spores do not.

Substrate, Partners and Season

Smith's Amanita is ectomycorrhizal, and its principal partner in the Pacific Northwest is Douglas-fir, with other conifers involved across its range. It fruits from soil and conifer duff on well-drained ground, often on slopes, banks and old road cuts, in mature forest as well as in second growth.

The season is autumn, typically September through November depending on latitude, elevation and the timing of the first sustained rains. It shares ground and season with several other pale forest fungi, including Tricholoma species, which is precisely why the base and the gill attachment need checking on every specimen rather than assumed from the cap.

Separating It from the Look-alikes

The most important morphological comparison is with the white matsutake, Tricholoma murrillianum. That species has gills that are attached to the stipe with a notch, not free, and they stain rusty-brown where bruised or aged. Its partial veil forms a firm, persistent, membranous ring high on the stipe rather than a crumbling cottony zone. Its base is simply tapered or club-shaped with no scaly friable veil covering and no long rooting spindle. Its cap develops brownish fibrils and flattened scales over a white ground, and the whole mushroom has a strongly aromatic, spicy scent. Any one of gill attachment, ring structure or base shape will separate the two.

Amanita silvicola is closer in construction, being another white western Lepidella, but it is generally smaller and softer, its universal veil is more powdery and evenly distributed, and its base forms a rounded or marginate bulb without the long tapering root.

Amanita magniverrucata and its relatives carry conspicuous, firm, pyramidal warts on the cap that are far more sharply defined than the soft cottony flakes here, and they are associated chiefly with pines.

Amanita ocreata and the other white members of the destroying angel group have smooth caps free of veil debris, a prominent membranous sac at the base, and a well-formed persistent skirt-like ring, all of which are absent in Smith's Amanita.

Large white Leucoagaricus and Agaricus species share the free gills but not the base: they have no universal veil covering, no rooting spindle, and Agaricus in addition produces a chocolate-brown spore print and pink young gills.

Catathelasma species are heavy and pale but have decurrent gills running down the stipe and a double ring, again with no volval tissue.

A Working Sequence
