A large ringless Amanita whose bronze-brown cap carries ragged grey veil patches and whose stem is wrapped in snakeskin-like grey bands above a crumbling volva.
Overview
Amanita ceciliae is the largest and most heavily patterned of the common grisettes. It shares the section Vaginatae features of a ringless stem, free white gills, a grooved cap margin and a white spore print, but it departs from its relatives in the fate of its universal veil, which is unusually soft and friable.
Instead of splitting cleanly and leaving a tall intact sac, the veil in this species fragments. Part of it stays on the cap as large, irregular, ash-grey to dirty grey cottony patches, and the rest breaks up around the stem base into loose concentric bands and crumbling rings rather than a persistent bag. That combination is why it also carries the older name strangulated amanita, from the appearance of the constricted, girdled base.
The stem contributes the other half of the name: it is typically covered in fine greyish fibrillose banding arranged in irregular transverse zigzags, giving a scaly, reptilian look against the pale ground. Together with the substantial size and the bronze cap, these features make it one of the more distinctive ringless Amanita species in temperate woodland.
How to identify it
Cap
6-12 cm across, occasionally to 15 cm, ovoid then broadly convex, finally flat with a shallow umbo. The ground colour is bronze-brown, greyish-brown or warm olive-brown, darker at the centre, and the surface is thinly fleshed and slightly greasy when wet. Scattered across it are large, irregular, thick, ash-grey to dark grey felty patches of universal veil that are easily dislodged by rain. The margin is strongly grooved for a third of the radius.
Gills
Free from the stem, crowded, broad, white to cream, with a distinctly floccose grey-flecked edge that is visible with a lens. Short gills of several lengths are interspersed between the full-length ones.
Stipe
8-20 cm tall and 1-2 cm thick, tapering upward from a thickened base, whitish to pale grey-brown, and characteristically patterned with fine greyish fibrillose bands and zigzag scales arranged in irregular transverse rings, the snakeskin effect that gives the species its name. There is no ring. The base is not enclosed in a persistent sac; instead the fragile volva breaks into two or three soft grey concentric bands or crumbling collars that sit against the stem and are often destroyed on collection.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white, thin and brittle, unchanging on cutting, with a mild odour. The spore print is white and the spores are globose.
Where and when it grows
This species grows on the ground in broadleaf woodland, with a marked preference for oak and beech, and it also occurs with hornbeam, lime, birch and occasionally conifers in mixed stands. It favours richer, loamy and often calcareous soils, and is frequently found along woodland rides, on shaded banks and in wooded parkland with mature trees.
Fruiting runs from midsummer into autumn, generally peaking a little earlier than the smaller grisettes. It is widespread but rather scattered across Europe, being locally frequent in southern and central regions, and comparable material occurs in North America, where it has often been recorded under this name from oak-dominated woods.
Ecological role
Amanita ceciliae is ectomycorrhizal, wrapping the fine roots of its broadleaf partners in a fungal sheath that transfers soil-derived water and minerals to the tree in return for photosynthetic carbon. Its preference for mature, undisturbed stands on richer soils gives it a patchier distribution than the more generalist grisettes.
The soft, poorly organised universal veil determines much of the fungus's appearance. Because the veil tissue is friable rather than membranous, it tears in two directions as the stem extends, sticking to the cap as grey patches and collapsing around the base as loose bands. Heavy rain can wash the cap patches off entirely, in which case the banded stem base and the greyish-flecked gill edges become the most reliable remaining characters.
Similar species
Amanita vaginata and Amanita fulva are smaller, have essentially bare caps, plain stems and a tall intact membranous sac at the base rather than crumbling grey bands. Amanita pantherina has a similar brown cap studded with white veil warts but carries a clear membranous ring on the stem and a distinctly rimmed, collared basal bulb. Amanita franchetii also has a ring and its veil remnants are yellowish rather than grey.
Amanita rubescens is another patchy brown Amanita of the same woods, separated by its ring, its greyish-pink cap warts, and above all by the flesh slowly staining wine-red where cut or damaged, a change absent in the snakeskin grisette. Where the cap patches have washed away, the greyish zigzag banding on the stem and the absence of any ring remain the deciding features.
