Snow False Morel Identification Guide
How to recognise Gyromitra montana along melting snowbanks in montane conifer forest, using its lobed brain-like cap, chambered stout stipe and a single decisive vertical cut.
The Setting
The Snow False Morel is a creature of the spring melt in western montane conifer country. You find it between roughly March and June, at elevations where snow still lies in patches - often between about 1,200 and 2,700 metres - along the edge of a receding snowbank, in the soggy duff under firs, spruces and pines, on gravelly forest roadsides, along old skid trails, and in disturbed ground where the soil has been turned. It frequently pushes up through leaf duff and needle litter with only a dome of tan showing, so a lot of finding it is scanning at a low angle for anything that does not match the litter texture.
The first impression is of a fat, pale, wrinkled brain sitting on a thick white pedestal. It is heavy for its size, feels solid rather than papery, and is often half-buried, with soil and needles trapped in the folds of the cap.
Reading The Cap
Call it a cap only as shorthand - the fertile head of a Gyromitra is not built like a gilled mushroom's cap. It is usually 5-15 cm across, sometimes considerably larger, and it is compact, rounded and lumpy rather than tall or conical. The surface is thrown into broad, blunt, irregular lobes and folds that give it a cauliflower or cerebral look. Crucially, those folds are convolutions of a continuous surface, not pits: there are no vertical ridges enclosing sunken chambers as there would be on a true morel.
Colour runs pale yellow-brown, tan, ochre, buff or warm reddish-brown, generally darkening with age and paling toward the margin. Young specimens are often quite pale. The undersurface of the lobes - the sterile side - is whitish to cream and slightly downy or scurfy.
The margin is where much of the identification lives. The lower edges of the cap turn under and fuse to the top of the stipe at several irregular points, so the head is partly attached and partly free, with pockets and tunnels running back between the cap and the stem. Trace the rim with a fingertip and you feel it lift away in some places and grip tight in others.
Reading The Stipe
The stipe is stout, short relative to the cap, and often thicker at the base. It is white to cream, sometimes flushed pale pinkish-buff, and its surface is uneven - ribbed, wrinkled, folded and often with vertical channels running down it. On many specimens the stipe is nearly as broad as it is tall, giving the fruit body a squat, bulldog build.
The Decisive Cut
Nothing beats slicing the whole fruit body vertically from the top of the cap right down through the base. Do it on every collection.
Inside a Snow False Morel you find a maze. The stipe interior is not one clean hollow tube; it is divided by folded white tissue into a network of irregular chambers and pockets - the technical word is lacunose. Some chambers are large, others narrow slits, and the partitions are continuous with the folds you can see on the outside. The cap flesh is white, brittle, and 2-5 mm thick, and the cap cavity above the stipe is likewise broken up by folds.
The flesh is whitish throughout and stays whitish. There is no milky exudate, no bruising to blue, red or black, and no strong colour reaction on exposure to air. Odour is mild and faintly earthy or fungal.
Spore Print And Microscopy
Gyromitra is an ascomycete, so its spores are shot from the exposed upper surface of the cap rather than dropped from beneath it. To collect a print, lay a piece of the fertile lobe fertile-side down on paper or, better, glass, and cover it; alternatively invert a whole fresh cap over a sheet. Fresh, well-hydrated material often puffs a visible cloud of spores if you breathe warm air over it.
The deposit is whitish to pale cream or faintly yellowish. Under the microscope the spores are large, smooth to very finely roughened, ellipsoid, roughly 25-35 by 10-15 micrometres, usually with a pair of prominent oil droplets and a small pointed apiculus at each end. Those tiny end-points and the two guttules are a useful confirmation, and they distinguish the group from the smooth, apiculus-free spores of true morels.
Substrate, Season And Ecology
The Snow False Morel is a saprotroph and probably an opportunistic litter and wood decomposer. It fruits on soil rich in conifer duff, over buried woody debris, and in ground disturbed by logging, road-cutting or snow-plough scraping. It is tightly tied to snowmelt: the fruiting front tracks the retreating snowline uphill through the spring, so a slope that has finished fruiting at 1,500 metres may just be starting at 2,000 metres two weeks later. Where you find one you will usually find several, often in loose arcs or scattered groups.
Separating It From Look-alikes By Structure
True morels (Morchella species) are the most common confusion. A true morel has a cap covered in distinct pits separated by raised ridges, like a honeycomb, and the cap is fused to the stipe along its whole lower margin. Most decisively, a vertical cut through a true morel shows one continuous hollow chamber running from the very tip of the cap to the base of the stipe, with no internal partitions at all. The Snow False Morel is lobed rather than pitted and chambered rather than hollow.
False Morel (Gyromitra esculenta) is smaller and thinner-fleshed, with a much more finely and sharply convoluted, reddish-brown to date-brown cap that looks genuinely brain-like, carried on a comparatively slim, often furrowed stipe. It also tends to appear under pines at lower elevations.
Gyromitra caroliniana is a large eastern species with a darker red-brown, more deeply and finely wrinkled head.
Gyromitra ancilis and the disc-like Discina group are shallow cups or wavy discs sitting almost directly on the substrate with a very short, stubby, ribbed base rather than a substantial stipe.
Verpa species hang their smooth or wrinkled thimble-like caps free from the stipe apex, attached only at the very top, and their stipes are stuffed with cottony pith rather than divided into chambers.
