Splendid Waxcap Identification Guide

A field routine for the large scarlet waxcap of old unimproved grassland, built around its dry non-slimy cap, thick waxy gills, yellow-based stem and honey-scented drying flesh.

The Grassland You Have to Be Standing In

Splendid Waxcap is a species of place as much as of shape. To find it you need old grassland that has never been ploughed, reseeded or fertilised: sheep-grazed hill pasture, a closely mown churchyard, a coastal cliff-top sward, a dune slack, or an ancient lawn on a country estate. The turf is short, tight, mossy, and full of small herbs rather than a monoculture of lush ryegrass. In autumn, after a wet spell followed by mild days, waxcaps push through that turf in numbers, and the Splendid Waxcap stands out even among the reds because of its size and its saturated colour. A mature cap can be 5 to 8 cm across, occasionally 10, and the colour is a deep blood-scarlet rather than the softer orange-red of many companions. From a few paces the impression is of a lacquered red disc sitting on a red stem in green moss.

Reading the Cap

Get close and check the surface texture first, because it is the character that carries the most weight in this group. The cap of Splendid Waxcap is dry to slightly greasy, never glutinous, and never leaves slime on the fingers. Under a lens it is minutely fibrillose or silky, sometimes finely cracked over the disc in dry weather, and it may develop a low irregular sheen rather than a wet gloss. The shape starts convex, often with a slight point or broad umbo, then expands to flattened and finally to shallowly depressed with a wavy, lobed or split margin in large specimens. Colour ages informatively: the deep scarlet fades from the margin inward through orange-red to orange, and old caps can be almost apricot at the rim while the centre stays red. That two-tone fading pattern is normal and should not push you toward a different species.

Reading the Gills

Waxcap gills are the reason for the name and this species shows them at their best. They are thick, broad, soft and distinctly waxy to the touch, well spaced, and often connected by low cross-veins near the stipe. Attachment is broadly adnate, usually with a short decurrent tooth running a little way down the stem. Colour is orange-red to red on the faces, typically paler and yellower toward the gill edge and toward the margin of the cap, so the underside looks two-toned in good light. Smear a gill between finger and thumb: it will crush to a soft waxy paste rather than shredding into fibres, which separates the waxcaps as a group from red-capped brittlegills and from small red mycenas.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is 4 to 8 cm long and 0.6 to 1.5 cm thick, roughly cylindrical, often slightly flattened or grooved lengthwise, and it tapers a little toward the base. It is dry, smooth and never slimy, coloured red to orange-red over most of its length. The base is where the diagnosis is settled: in typical material the extreme base is yellow, orange-yellow or whitish, giving a clean colour break from the red above. There is no ring, no cortina and no volva. Cut the fruit body vertically: the flesh is yellowish to orange, tinged red directly beneath the cap surface, firm in the cap and fibrous in the stipe, which becomes hollow with age. It does not blacken, blue or redden on cutting, and no colour change of any kind should appear over the following minutes. A red waxcap that turns black where bruised belongs to a different group entirely.

Odour

Set a couple of specimens in a paper bag or on a windowsill and check them again after a few hours as they begin to dry. Splendid Waxcap develops a distinct sweet honey-like odour, which strengthens as the flesh loses water. Fresh material in the field is often odourless, so absence of the smell on a wet morning proves nothing, but its appearance during drying is strong supporting evidence.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut a mature cap free and lay it gills down on black paper under a cover for three to six hours. The deposit is white, sometimes with the faintest cream tone, and it must be read on a dark background to be visible at all. A white print immediately eliminates the red-capped species with pink, rust or brown spores that can otherwise catch out an inexperienced eye in grassland, and it confirms membership of the waxcap group.

Season, Substrate and Ecology

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn and into early winter in mild coastal areas, peaking with the first sustained damp spells after the grass has stopped growing hard. The fungus lives in the soil of long-established grassland, associated with the moss and turf layer, and it is highly sensitive to disturbance: ploughing, fertiliser and reseeding remove it and it does not readily return. That sensitivity is why waxcap grassland is treated as an indicator habitat, and why a good site produces the same species from the same patches over decades. Look also on well-drained hillsides, old golf-course roughs, and steep banks too awkward to have been improved.

Separating the Look-alikes

Crimson waxcap, Hygrocybe punicea, is the closest large red species. Its cap is viscid to slimy when wet, often with a darker blood-red centre and a paler margin, its stipe is coarsely fibrous and streaky, and crucially the base of the stipe is white and fibrous rather than cleanly yellow. It is usually a slightly larger, more robust fungus with a more scaly-fibrous stem surface.

Scarlet waxcap, Hygrocybe coccinea, is smaller and neater, its cap moist and greasy rather than dry-silky, its stem uniformly red or orange-red right to the base, and its gills more strongly decurrent-toothed with red flesh directly beneath the cuticle.

Vermilion waxcap, Hygrocybe miniata, is a small species with a dry cap that is minutely scurfy or scaly over the disc under a lens, and a slender stem rarely more than 4 mm thick.

Honey waxcap, Hygrocybe reidii, shares the honey odour and will confuse a nose-led identification. It is markedly smaller, with a moist orange-red cap, and it lacks the deep blood-scarlet, dry, silky cap of Splendid Waxcap.

The blackening waxcaps, Hygrocybe conica and relatives, may start red or orange but bruise and age black on cap, gills and stem, which no part of Splendid Waxcap ever does.

Finally, red brittlegills are ruled out instantly by their brittle, chalk-like flesh that snaps, their crowded thin gills and their non-waxy texture.

Field Checklist

Old unimproved short turf; large deep scarlet cap, dry to slightly greasy and silky-fibrillose; thick waxy well-spaced red gills paler at the edge with a short decurrent tooth; dry red stipe with a yellow or whitish base; yellowish flesh with no colour change; honey scent as it dries; white spore print; autumn. How do I separate Splendid Waxcap from Crimson Waxcap in the field?
Feel the cap and look at the stem base. Splendid Waxcap has a dry to barely greasy, silky-fibrillose cap and a stem whose extreme base is yellow or whitish against red above. Crimson Waxcap has a viscid to slimy cap when wet and a coarsely fibrous stem with a white fibrous base rather than a clean yellow one.
What kind of grassland supports this species?
Old, undisturbed, nutrient-poor turf that has never been ploughed, reseeded or fertilised: hill pasture, churchyards, coastal cliff-top swards, dune grassland, estate lawns and unimproved golf-course roughs. The sward is typically short, mossy and rich in small herbs.
