Split Fibrecap Identification Guide

A practical guide to recognising the conical, radially split straw-ochre fibrecap of path edges and woodland margins, using its umbo, fibrous cap splitting, dull clay-brown spore print and distinctive odour.

The First Look

Split Fibrecap is a mushroom of edges. You meet it along woodland rides and footpath verges, on mossy banks under lime and hazel, in parkland grass beneath planted broadleaves, and on the compacted soil beside tracks, from summer through autumn. The silhouette registers before the colour: a sharply conical to bell-shaped cap with a distinct pointed centre, perched on a straight pale stem, standing a little above the surrounding vegetation. Colour is straw-yellow to warm ochre-brown, and the surface has a silky sheen that catches low light. Fruit bodies are usually scattered or in small groups rather than tufted, and different ages sit side by side, letting you watch the cap open and tear.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 2 to 8 cm across and its development is the heart of the identification. It begins as a narrow cone, almost sharply pointed, with the margin pressed against the stem. As it expands the margin lifts and flares outward while the centre keeps a firm pointed or blunt umbo, so mature caps look like a shallow bell with a raised nipple. The surface is entirely dry and covered in fine radiating fibrils, silky and appressed rather than woolly. Because those fibrils run outward and the cap is expanding faster at the rim than at the centre, the surface splits radially from the margin inward, producing the deep clefts that name the species. In dry weather the splits are dramatic and the margin becomes a ragged star, sometimes uplifted and torn back to expose the pale flesh between the fibre bundles. There are no true scales, no slime and no veil patches on the disc.

Reading the Gills

The gills are crowded, narrow to moderately broad, and adnexed to almost free, often pulling well away from the stem in mature caps. Colour progression is important and easy to misread: they begin whitish to pale greyish, pass through pale straw and olive-grey, and end a dull clay-brown or snuff-brown with a faint olive cast. They never become bright rust, never pink and never purple-brown. Look at the gill edge with a lens: it is usually paler, whitish, and minutely fringed or floccose. That pale fringed edge against a duller brown face is typical of the whole fibrecap group.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stipe is 3 to 9 cm long and 4 to 12 mm thick, straight or slightly bent, solid and firm, and it does not snap crisply but tears fibrously. Its colour is whitish to pale straw, often flushing brownish toward the base with handling and age, and the surface is finely longitudinally fibrillose along its whole length. There is no ring and no cortina worth the name; at most a scattering of fine fibres near the apex in very young material. Examine the extreme apex with a lens: it is faintly pruinose, dusted as if with the finest flour, but that pruinosity does not continue down the stem, which is a useful group-level character. The base is at most slightly thickened and never forms an abrupt rimmed bulb.

Cut the fruit body lengthways. The flesh is white to pale straw, unchanging, firm in the cap and fibrous in the stem. No reddening, no blueing and no blackening should occur, and a fibrecap that flushes distinctly red on the cap surface or in cut flesh belongs to a different species altogether.

Odour

Crush a fragment of cap flesh between your fingers and smell it immediately. Split Fibrecap has a strong, sharply distinctive odour usually described as spermatic, sometimes read as mealy or as fresh-cut green stems. It is not subtle and it is one of the best confirmations that you are in the fibrecap group at all, though it does not separate species within the group.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut a fully expanded cap free and set it gills down on white paper for three to five hours. The deposit is a dull clay-brown to snuff-brown or tobacco shade, distinctly duller and greyer than the bright rust of a webcap or rustgill. Under a microscope the spores are smooth and almond-shaped with a slight apical point, not nodulose or knobbly, which places this species in the smooth-spored section of the group and rules out the many lumpy-spored fibrecaps that can look similar in the field.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Split Fibrecap is ectomycorrhizal, forming sheaths on the fine roots of broadleaved trees and sometimes conifers, so it always occurs within rooting distance of a tree even when it appears to be growing in open grass. Lime, hazel, beech, oak, birch and poplar all support it. It favours disturbed and compacted ground with thin litter: track sides, path shoulders, mown parkland under specimen trees, and the bare margins of woodland rides. Fruiting runs from early summer through to late autumn, and it often appears after moderate rain when heavier litter species are still dormant.

Separating the Look-alikes

Within the fibrecaps, several relatives share the conical split cap. Inocybe maculata has a distinctly darker chestnut-brown cap with a conspicuous whitish veil patch left on the umbo, and its stem is more clearly swollen at the base. The small bulbous-based species such as Inocybe cookei have an abrupt, rimmed marginate bulb and paler, more ochre caps. Several fibrecaps stain red on the cap, gills or flesh, and any reddening dismisses Split Fibrecap outright. Beyond that, honest separation within the group often depends on microscopy, particularly spore shape and the presence or absence of thick-walled cystidia on the gill faces, so a confident field call rests on the whole combination rather than any single feature.

Outside the group, Hebeloma species have smooth to slightly viscid, pale buff caps that do not split radially, a radish odour, and paler clay prints with more of a pinkish tone. Pinkgills, Entoloma species, may share the conical shape but have gills that turn salmon-pink and a pink spore print. Conecaps and Pholiotina have fragile, smooth, hygrophanous caps, hollow slender stems and rusty-brown prints. Webcaps, Cortinarius species, are excluded by their cobwebby cortina and bright rust prints. And the deceivers and their kin have thick, distant, flesh-pink gills and white prints.

Common questions

Why does the cap split so dramatically?
The cap surface is built from strong radiating fibre bundles, and as the cap expands the margin stretches faster than those fibres can accommodate, so the surface tears along the lines between them. Dry, breezy weather exaggerates the effect until the margin becomes a ragged star with pale flesh visible between the splits.
Where does Split Fibrecap grow?
On soil within rooting distance of broadleaved trees, especially on disturbed, compacted or thinly littered ground: path shoulders, woodland ride edges, mossy banks under lime and hazel, and mown parkland beneath specimen trees. It fruits from early summer through late autumn.
Is it associated with trees or does it decay litter?
It is ectomycorrhizal. Its mycelium sheathes the fine roots of lime, hazel, beech, oak, birch, poplar and sometimes conifers, trading soil-derived water and minerals for tree sugars. Even specimens that appear to be in open grass are within reach of a tree's root system.
How do I tell a fibrecap from a webcap in the field?
Check the veil and the print colour. Webcaps show a cobwebby cortina between cap margin and stem when young and drop bright rusty spores, whereas Split Fibrecap has no cobweb, a dry radially split silky cap, and a duller snuff-brown to clay-brown print. The strong spermatic odour of the fibrecap is a further pointer.
