Spring Fieldcap Identification Guide
A practical walkthrough for Agrocybe praecox: a tan, often cracked spring mushroom of woodchip and mulch, with a membranous ring, tobacco-brown gills and white cords at the stem base.
The First Impression
Late April or May, and a mulched bed in a park, a landscaped car park border, or a woodland path freshly surfaced with chips. Dozens of medium-sized ochre-tan mushrooms are pushing up through the woodchip in loose troops, some singly, some in small huddles. They have a plain, slightly dusty look, a dry pale-clay cap that in dry weather is finely cracked like old paintwork, and — the character that quickly cuts the field of candidates in half — a ring on the stem.
This is a brown-spored mushroom of disturbed and mulched ground, and the earliness of the season is a real part of the identification, not just a footnote.
Reading the Cap
Caps are usually 3-8 cm across, occasionally to 10 cm. They begin hemispherical to convex with a slightly inrolled margin, then expand broadly convex to almost flat, often with a low blunt umbo and an uneven or slightly wavy margin.
The surface is dry and dull, smooth to faintly silky, without scales. Colour is pale tan, clay-buff, ochre or a warm milky coffee, generally darker over the centre and paler toward the edge; in wet weather it looks slightly greasy but is not truly viscid. In dry spells, expanded caps commonly develop a fine network of surface cracks over the disc, a texture worth learning because it recurs across the genus.
On very young specimens, look for a fringe of pale veil fragments hanging from the cap margin. These are remnants of the same membrane that produces the stem ring, and they usually fall away as the cap opens.
The Gills
Gills are adnate, sometimes with a small decurrent tooth, moderately crowded and fairly narrow. The colour sequence matters: pale greyish or clay-buff when very young, then dull cinnamon, then a flat tobacco or milk-chocolate brown when the spores ripen. There is no pink or lilac phase, and no black.
Under a lens the gill edge appears finely paler, almost white-mealy, against the darker face.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stem is 4-10 cm long and 5-12 mm thick, cylindric or slightly thickened downward, whitish to pale cream and often browning from the base upward with age. Its surface is finely fibrillose and often longitudinally lined above the ring.
The ring itself is the key structure. It is a thin membranous annulus set in the upper half of the stem, usually striate or grooved on its upper surface where the gill edges pressed against it. It is fragile: in older specimens it may collapse into a ragged skirt, tear away entirely, or persist only as a fibrous ring zone stained darker by fallen spores. Always check several fruit bodies, including the youngest.
Now excavate the base rather than snapping the stem off. Below ground you should find conspicuous white mycelial cords — rhizomorphs — running out through the woodchip or soil, sometimes several centimetres of them, binding fragments of substrate. Those cords are a genuinely useful confirming character for this species.
Cut a fruit body lengthwise. The flesh is white and firm in the cap, more fibrous in the stem, and it does not change colour when exposed. The odour is strongly farinaceous — think of fresh flour or crushed grain — and it is one of the most reliable non-visual characters here.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free just below the gills and set it gill-side down on white paper, covered with a cup or bowl. A few hours is usually enough; the caps are fleshy and release generously.
The print is a dull brown: tobacco brown, milky coffee, dark cinnamon-clay. It is a matt brown without the purple tint of a Stropharia or Psathyrella, and without the bright rusty orange-brown of a Gymnopilus or Pholiota. Comparing your print directly against a known purple-brown deposit is the fastest way to train your eye.
Under the microscope, the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, roughly 8-11 x 5-6 micrometres, with a clear truncate germ pore at one end.
Substrate and Season
This is a saprotroph of disturbed, nutrient-rich, woody ground. Its classic modern habitat is landscaping mulch: bark chips, wood chips, sawdust piles, mulched shrub beds in gardens, parks and industrial planting. It also grows in grassy woodland margins, hedge bottoms, on old bonfire and dump sites, and along path edges where soil has been turned.
The season is spring to early summer, roughly April to June, sometimes with a smaller flush later in the year on freshly laid mulch. It fruits in scattered troops and small clusters, often producing dozens of fruit bodies from a single mulched bed over a couple of weeks.
Separating the Look-Alikes on Morphology
Agrocybe molesta (also known as A. dura). Cap much paler, whitish to cream, thicker fleshed and typically far more strongly cracked; grows in grassland, lawns and verges rather than mulch; the ring is often less well formed. Microscopically the spores are noticeably larger.
Agrocybe rivulosa. Also a woodchip species, but the cap is paler cream-ochre and distinctly wrinkled and veined when young, the stature is taller, and the ring is large, flaring and set high on the stem.
Agrocybe pediades. Much smaller, hemispherical, ochre-yellow, growing in short grass, and completely ringless.
Cyclocybe aegerita (Poplar Fieldcap). Grows in tufts directly on standing or fallen hardwood trunks rather than in mulch, has a strongly cracked wrinkled cap, a persistent ring, and a much more clustered habit.
Stropharia species on woodchip. Several fruit in the same beds. They are separated by their darker purple-brown to purplish-black spore print, gills that pass through a mottled grey-lilac phase, and in many species a slimy cap or bluish-green tints.
Pholiota species. Usually scaly-capped, brighter yellow or tawny, clustered on wood, with a rusty brown print.
Hebeloma species. Cap smooth and often viscid, gills clay-brown with weeping droplets on the edge when fresh, no ring at all, spore print dull clay-brown, and a mycorrhizal association with trees rather than a life in mulch.
Agaricus species. Free gills that pass through bright pink to chocolate, a thicker ring, and a truly dark chocolate-brown print.
