Springtime Amanita Identification Guide
A careful field read of Amanita velosa: a salmon-buff spring Amanita of California oak woodland with a long-striate margin, a single broad veil patch, free white gills, a sheathing volva and no ring.
The First Impression
Late winter into spring, a California oak woodland in the foothills: coast live oak or blue oak, grass greening between the trunks, deep drifts of old leaves under the canopy. Standing in the duff at the drip line is a single warm-coloured Amanita, its cap a soft salmon-buff or apricot-tan, with one large white membranous patch stuck to the top like a torn sheet of paper, and a margin cut with deep radial grooves.
The impression you should register instantly is: Amanita, striate margin, and — running an eye down the stem — no ring. That trio of observations already places the collection in a small group.
Reading the Cap
Caps are 5-12 cm across, occasionally to 15 cm. They start egg-shaped or bell-shaped and expand to convex and finally plane, sometimes with a very low broad umbo and often with a slightly upturned margin in old specimens.
Colour is the first striking thing: salmon-pink, apricot, pale orange-buff, warm tan, occasionally fading toward cream at the margin or in weathered specimens. The surface is smooth, bare, and slightly tacky when wet, drying to a soft matt sheen.
Sitting on the disc there is usually a single large membranous patch of universal-veil tissue, white to pale buff, sometimes covering a good part of the cap, occasionally torn into two or three pieces. It is a removable sheet rather than a mass of warts, and rain can wash it off entirely, so its absence in one specimen means little if the rest of the collection agrees.
The margin is the character you must measure. It is strongly and conspicuously striate — grooved with radial lines that correspond to the gills below — and those striations are long, commonly running a quarter to a third of the way from margin to centre. Hold the cap edge-on against the sky and the grooves are obvious. This long striation is a sectional character, not just a decoration.
The Gills
Gills are free from the stem, or at most very narrowly attached, close to crowded, and moderately broad. Colour is white to cream, sometimes with a faint pinkish or buff flush, especially in age.
Between the full-length gills are shorter ones, the lamellulae, and their ends are worth checking with a lens: in this group they are typically truncate, cut off squarely rather than tapering to a point. Gill edges are often minutely floccose, giving a faintly powdered look under magnification.
Stipe, Base and the All-Important Volva
The stem is 6-15 cm long, tapering upward from a thicker base, white to pale pinkish-buff, silky-fibrillose and sometimes finely flocculose, stuffed with cottony tissue and eventually hollowing.
Then make the single most decisive check: run your eye and finger down the whole stem looking for a ring. In this species there is none. No skirt, no collar, no ring zone. Some specimens carry a loose sheath of volval tissue clinging partway up, which can be mistaken for a ring by a hurried eye, but it is a continuation of the basal sac, not a separate membrane hanging free from the cap margin.
The base is where identifications in this genus are won or lost, and it is also where they are most often thrown away. The volva here is membranous and sac-like but relatively thin, and it commonly hugs the stem base closely rather than standing out as a wide loose bag; sometimes it forms only a short free collar. It is white when fresh and frequently stains buff, pinkish or rusty with age or handling.
Because that structure is thin, buried in duff and easily left behind, never pull the fruit body. Push a knife or trowel into the litter well outside the stem base and lever the whole thing out with the soil, then brush the duff away carefully. A collection without an intact base is a collection you cannot finish identifying.
Cut a fruit body from cap to base. The flesh is white, soft, and unchanging when exposed; the odour is mild.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stem off flush with the gills and set the cap gill-side down on dark paper or glass, covered with a bowl. Amanitas print heavily; a few hours is normally plenty.
The print is white. Judging white on white is impossible, so use a dark surface or a glass slide held over dark cloth.
Under a microscope, the spores are broadly ellipsoid, smooth, and roughly 8-11 x 6.5-8 micrometres. Test a mount with Melzer's reagent: they are inamyloid, meaning they do not turn blue-black. Inamyloid spores together with the absent ring and the long-striate margin place the species in section Vaginatae, the ringless grisettes, which is exactly the frame you want when you start comparing look-alikes.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. It forms a root-sheath partnership with oaks — coast live oak, blue oak, valley oak and their relatives — and sometimes with madrone in mixed stands. It never grows on wood, and never in open ground away from host trees.
The season is early: late winter through spring, roughly February into May depending on latitude and elevation, following the winter rains as the ground warms. Fruit bodies are usually solitary or in small scattered groups pushing up through oak leaf litter and grass, rather than in troops or clusters.
Separating the Look-Alikes on Morphology
Amanita pachycolea. Also ringless and long-striate, but on a much larger scale: taller and heavier, with a dark umber to blackish-brown cap that pales toward the margin, and a thick, tall, sac-like volva that stains orange-brown to rusty in age. Predominantly a late-year fungus.
Amanita constricta. Grey to grey-brown cap, and its volva has a distinctive constricted collar where it grips the stem base — a structural difference, easily seen once the base is excavated whole.
Amanita vaginata group. Same ringless, long-striate architecture, but the caps are grey to grey-brown rather than salmon or apricot.
Amanita calyptroderma. Superficially similar in that it carries a big white veil patch on the cap, but it is a much larger autumn species with a deeper orange-brown cap, a well-developed ring on the stem, and a thick, firm volva. The ring alone settles it.
Amanita phalloides. Cap greenish, olive or yellowish rather than salmon, margin smooth and not striate, a persistent ring present, and a thick sac-like volva. Three independent characters differ.
Amanita ocreata. Fruits in the same oak woodland in the same spring season, so it must be checked, but it is white to cream overall, has a ring, and lacks the long-striate margin.
Volvopluteus and Volvariella. These also have free gills and a sac-like volva but no ring, so structurally they are close. Separate them by the gills, which turn distinctly salmon-pink as they mature, and by the pink spore print.
