A field walkthrough for the cinnabar-red spore head, its melting jelly coat and its stalk of woven cords, with the structural points that separate it from its two North American relatives and from earthstars.

The moment you find it

You rarely go looking for this fungus and find it; you round a bend on a wooded trail in the southern Appalachians or the Ozarks and see what looks like several scarlet beads pressed into raw clay at ankle height. The setting is almost always the same: an eroded bank, a road cut, the lip of a gully, a place where rain has stripped the leaf litter away and left bare mineral soil under oaks. Fruit bodies come in loose troops, sometimes dozens strung along a metre of bank, sometimes just two or three tucked into moss. Nothing else in an eastern hardwood forest reads as a marble-sized red ball sitting on a short spongy brown column, so the initial recognition is quick. The work afterwards is confirming which Calostoma you have.

Sizing up the whole fruit body

Work from the ground up before you touch anything. The total height is usually 2 to 4 cm, occasionally more when the fungus has pushed up through moss. The head is a rounded spore case 1 to 2 cm across, sitting on a shorter and often narrower stalk. On young material the whole structure looks glazed, as though it had been dipped in a clear varnish, and the outline is softened by that coating. On weathered material the outline is crisp and the surface matt.

The jelly, and how it disappears

The gelatinous layer is the character the common name is built around. Press a young head with a fingertip and it dimples like set jelly, then springs back. As the fungus matures, the layer breaks into translucent, faintly yellowish chunks that slide down and lodge among the cords of the stalk, where they dry to amber flakes. Half-shed material is the commonest state you will encounter, and it is diagnostic in itself: a bright red ball with clear jelly clinging to one side and glassy lumps caught in the base. In dry weather the jelly may already have gone, so its absence on an old specimen is not evidence against the species. Look instead for the amber residue.

The spore case and its starred mouth

Under the jelly the spore case is smooth, firm and a saturated cinnabar to orange-red. With age, sun and rain the red fades unevenly to dull orange, brick or ochre-brown. Put a lens on the apex. There you will find a raised mouth made of four to seven (most often five) sharply defined ridges arranged like a small star, or like a set of stitched lips. Those ridges hold their colour far longer than the rest of the head, so on a badly faded specimen the little red star at the top may be the last pigment left, and it is often the fastest way to confirm the genus at a glance.

The stalk, which is not a stipe

This is the second structural surprise. The stalk is not fleshy tissue but a spongy column of interwoven, fused cords that you can tease apart with a thumbnail. It stands 1 to 4 cm tall, is deeply pitted and lacunose, and ranges from yellowish through reddish-brown to dull ochre. Slice it lengthwise and you see a lattice of channels rather than solid flesh. Follow it down and the same cords continue into the clay, binding a plug of soil. Any specimen you dig should come up with that root-like mass attached; a clean, solid, fibrous stipe would rule the genus out immediately.

Interior and colour change

Cut a mature head in half. Inside is a dry, loose powder held in a wispy network, pale yellow to buff. Immature heads are white to pale yellow and dense in section, darkening slowly as spores mature. There is no colour change worth recording: nothing bruises blue, red or black, and the only shift over time is the slow fading of the red exterior and the drying of the jelly. Fresh jelly may leave a faint stickiness on the fingers, nothing more.

Getting a spore deposit

A conventional gilled-mushroom spore print is impossible here, because the spores are never exposed on an open surface. The equivalent step is to take a mature head, hold it mouth-down over a sheet of dark paper and tap or squeeze it gently. A puff of fine powder falls out through the starred mouth. Read the colour against the dark background: pale yellow to buff or cream, never brown, never pink, never olive. Under a microscope the spores are ellipsoid, colourless rather than pigmented, and conspicuously pitted, which is a clean separation from the round, brown, spiny spores of the earthballs.

Substrate, partners and season

Calostoma cinnabarinum is ectomycorrhizal and its partners are oaks, with other hardwoods sometimes involved. That means you should be under or near mature broadleaf trees, and the fruit bodies sit on soil, never on wood. The strong preference is for exposed mineral soil, particularly clay: cut banks, path edges, slumped slopes, mossy road cuts. The season runs from midsummer into autumn, with fruiting following heavy rain, and troops often reappear on the same bank year after year.

Separating it from look-alikes by structure

Calostoma lutescens. Larger, with a yellow to ochre head where only the peristome ridges are red, and, decisively, a conspicuous flattened collar of tissue at the junction of head and stalk. Its gelatinous layer is thin and easily missed.

Calostoma ravenelii. No jelly at all at any stage. The head is dull yellowish-brown and the surface is scurfy or granular rather than smooth and glazed. Its mouth ridges are brownish and fringed, not a sharp red star.

Earthstars (Geastrum). The outer wall splits into rays that lie flat on the ground, and a separate papery spore sac with a defined pore sits in the middle. There is no cord stalk and no jelly.

Earthballs (Scleroderma). Sessile or with a short rooting base, thick warty rind, and a powdery interior that matures to purple-black rather than pale yellow.

Lycogala and other red slime moulds. Sometimes mistaken at a distance because of the colour, but they sit directly on rotten wood, have no stalk, and their interior is a paste rather than a dry powder.

A working field sequence

  1. Red head at ankle height on bare soil under oaks.
  2. Jelly present, or amber flakes caught in the stalk.
  3. Lens on the apex: a raised star of four to seven red ridges.
  4. Stalk made of woven cords, pitted and spongy, not solid flesh.
  5. Tapped powder pale yellow to buff.
  6. Digging confirms cords running into clay, no wood involved.

If all six agree, you have Calostoma cinnabarinum. If step two fails and the head is dull and granular, move to C. ravenelii; if the head is yellow with a collar, move to C. lutescens.

Look at the apex with a hand lens.
