Sulphur Knight Identification Guide
How to work through Tricholoma sulphureum in the field: uniform sulphur-yellow colouring, thick distant notched gills, a white spore print, and an unmistakable coal-gas odour.
The First Impression
The Sulphur Knight announces itself by colour and smell long before you get to the fine detail. You are typically standing in an oak or beech wood in early to mid autumn, on the soil among leaf litter, and a small group of stocky yellow mushrooms is pushing up through the leaves. The yellow is not a bright buttercup nor an orange-tan; it is a slightly dirty, greenish sulphur — the colour of old powdered brimstone — and it runs right through the fungus, cap, gills and stipe alike.
Pick one up and hold it near your face. The odour is the strongest single character in the species: a sharp, chemical smell of coal gas, tar or hot bitumen that is completely unlike the pleasant or mealy odours of most woodland agarics. On a still day you can sometimes smell a colony before you see it. Odour alone should never close an identification, but here it is an enormously useful signpost that tells you which set of characters to check next.
Reading the Cap
The cap is 3–8 cm across, at first convex with an inrolled margin, expanding to broadly convex or flat and often keeping a low broad umbo at the centre. The surface is dry and matt to slightly silky-fibrillose — never sticky or greasy, even in rain. Colour is sulphur-yellow overall, usually a shade browner or more olive at the disc, and older caps can weather to a dull brownish-ochre while the margin keeps the yellow. The flesh at the margin is thin and the edge often becomes slightly wavy or splits with age.
A useful variant to be aware of is the form with a dark purplish-brown cap sometimes treated as Tricholoma bufonium. Everything else — gills, stipe, odour — matches the Sulphur Knight, so a brown-capped mushroom with sulphur gills and a gassy smell has not defeated you.
The Gills
Turn the cap over. The gills are the second key character and they are markedly different from most yellow agarics. They are:
- Thick and waxy-looking rather than thin and papery
- Distant to fairly distant, with clear gaps between them, so you can count them without a lens
- Deeply notched (emarginate) at the stipe, the classic Tricholoma attachment, with a small tooth running down
- Sulphur-yellow throughout, the same shade as the cap, with slightly paler and sometimes uneven edges
Because the spores are white, the gill colour does not darken as the fruitbody ages; a mature specimen still has yellow gills, only a little duller and browner where damaged.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 4–9 cm tall and 0.6–1.5 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly swollen or curved at the base, solid at first and becoming stuffed or hollow. It is the same sulphur-yellow as the cap, streaked with fine longitudinal fibrils that are often a shade browner, and it has no ring and no volva — a fresh cortina or membranous ring rules the species out. The base sits directly in soil and litter, sometimes with pale mycelial threads, but there is no sheath, bag or basal bulb.
Split a fruitbody lengthwise. The flesh is pale yellow throughout, firmer in the stipe than in the thin cap, and does not change colour appreciably on exposure — no blueing, no reddening, no milk or latex. The gassy odour intensifies noticeably as soon as the flesh is broken, which is itself a confirmation step worth performing on every collection.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap from the stipe and set it gills-down on a piece of dark card or a glass slide over black paper — with a white-spored species this contrast matters. Cover with a bowl and leave for two to four hours in a draught-free place. The deposit is white, sometimes with the faintest cream tinge. That single result eliminates a very large slice of the possible confusions: any rust-brown, ochre, pink or purple-brown deposit means you are not in Tricholoma at all. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, broadly ellipsoid and about 9–12 × 5–7 µm, and they are not amyloid.
Substrate and Season
Tricholoma sulphureum is ectomycorrhizal and grows from soil, never from wood. Its usual partners are oak and beech, with occasional records under other broadleaves and rarely conifers, so look in mature deciduous woodland, in old parkland with veteran oaks, and along wooded lane banks. It favours neutral to slightly acid soils and appears from late summer through autumn, most often in small scattered troops or loose clusters of three to a dozen fruitbodies rather than singly. Because it is mycorrhizal, it recurs in the same spot year after year as long as the partner tree stands.
Separating the Look-alikes
- Yellow Knight (Tricholoma equestre / T. flavovirens) — the closest yellow Tricholoma. Its cap is viscid when damp and streaked with brownish fibrils, the flesh is white rather than yellow, the gills are usually more crowded, and the odour is faintly farinaceous, not gassy. It is a species of sandy soil under pines.
- Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) — superficially similar in colour but grows in dense clusters on wood, has crowded gills that turn greenish then purple-brown, and gives a purple-brown spore print.
- Webcaps (Cortinarius spp.) — several are yellow-toned, but young fruitbodies show a cobwebby cortina between cap margin and stipe, and the mature gills and stipe are dusted rust-brown by the spores.
- Rustgills (Gymnopilus spp.) — bright yellow-orange, but lignicolous, usually with a ring zone, scaly caps and a rusty print.
- Waxcaps (Hygrocybe spp.) — yellow, but with thick, widely spaced, distinctly waxy and often decurrent gills, greasy caps, and no gassy odour.
- Honey Fungus (Armillaria spp.) — clustered at tree bases with a persistent ring and darker fibrillose scales.
