Boletus reticulatus

An early-season relative of the porcini with a dry, velvety, often crazed brown cap and a pale net covering the whole length of the stipe. Flesh is white and unchanging.
Overview
Boletus reticulatus, also widely published as Boletus aestivalis, is one of the four core European species of the Boletus edulis group. It is the earliest of them to appear, sometimes fruiting while spring foliage is still expanding, and it is a mushroom of warm, sheltered broadleaf woodland rather than the cool conifer plantations favoured by B. edulis itself.
The species is defined by two easy characters: a dry, matte to finely velvety cap that habitually cracks into a network of shallow fissures in dry weather, and a raised pale net that extends from the very top of the stipe right down to the base. In the other members of the group the reticulation is confined to the upper portion and fades downward.
Because of these features it is one of the more straightforward large boletes to place to species in the field, and it serves as a good introduction to the reticulation patterns that structure identification across the whole genus.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 8-20 cm across, hemispherical then broadly convex to almost flat in age. Colours run from pale clay and ochre-buff to mid or greyish-brown, usually more uniform than in B. edulis and without a conspicuously paler rim. The surface is dry and finely felted or velvety to the touch, never sticky, and in warm dry spells it splits into a mosaic of shallow cracks showing paler flesh between the plates.
Pores
The pore surface starts whitish and stuffed, passing through cream and pale yellow to olive-yellow. Pores are small and circular, and the tube layer separates cleanly from the cap. There is no blue reaction to bruising.
Stipe
The stipe is 8-15 cm tall and 2-5 cm thick, stout and club-shaped at first, often becoming more cylindrical and slender as it elongates. Its ground colour is pale brown to buff, and it is covered from apex to base in a conspicuous raised network that is whitish above and can darken to brownish below. The full-length net is the single most useful field character.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is white, firm when young and softening with age, and does not change colour when cut. The spore print is olive-brown.
Where and when it grows
This bolete is a species of warm broadleaf woodland, associating chiefly with oak and beech and also with sweet chestnut, hornbeam and lime. It prefers well-drained calcareous or neutral soils, sunlit woodland edges, coppice, parkland and open rides where the ground warms quickly, and it is much less frequent in dense shade or on cold acid soils.
Fruiting begins in late spring, sometimes as early as May in mild regions, peaks through June and July and can continue sporadically into early autumn. It is common through central and southern Europe, becomes scarcer northwards, and extends east into western Asia. Closely related forms occur in eastern North America.
Ecological role
Like the rest of the edulis group, Boletus reticulatus is ectomycorrhizal, wrapping the fine roots of its broadleaf partners in a fungal sheath and exchanging soil-derived water and mineral nutrients for photosynthetic sugars. Its preference for warm, freely drained soils explains both its southern distribution and its early season: the mycelium becomes active as soon as soil temperatures rise in spring.
The association is long-lived, and productive patches under mature oaks may fruit for many decades. Early fruiting places it ahead of most other large boletes in the season, so it occupies a distinct temporal niche within the same woodlands that later produce B. edulis and B. aereus.
Similar species
Boletus edulis is the main comparison: it has a smoother, often tacky cap with a pale marginal rim, and its white net covers only the upper part of a markedly swollen stipe. Boletus aereus shares the dry cap and warm broadleaf habitat but is far darker, sooty bronze to blackish-brown, with a browner stipe and finer net.
Tylopilus felleus can look similar in size and cap colour but develops pink-tinged pores and bears a coarse dark net on a paler stipe. Boletus pinophilus is a deeper mahogany colour, occurs with conifers, and its net has a reddish cast on a brown ground rather than the pale full-length net seen here.
