Summer Truffle Identification Guide
How to recognise Tuber aestivum from the outside in: coarse black pyramidal warts, a pale hazel interior marbled with white veins, and reticulate spores under the microscope.
The First Impression
Identifying the Summer Truffle begins with a habit that separates it from almost everything else in a field guide: it never appears above ground. Tuber aestivum is hypogeous, forming its fruitbodies a few centimetres to a foot below the surface in the root zone of a host tree, so the "first impression" is usually of a place rather than a fungus.
The setting to learn is calcareous woodland — thin, stony, free-draining soil over chalk or limestone, with oak, beech, hazel, hornbeam or lime overhead, often on a sunny bank or a woodland edge rather than deep shade. Around a productive tree there is frequently a brûlé: a roughly circular patch of bare or sparsely vegetated ground where the truffle mycelium suppresses competing plants. Fresh soil disturbance is another clue, since squirrels, voles, deer and wild boar excavate truffles and disperse the spores in doing so.
Specimens are then found by careful excavation, and the identification proper starts once one is in your hand.
Reading the Outside
A mature Summer Truffle is 2–8 cm across, occasionally larger, and shaped like an irregular potato: subglobose, often lumpy, sometimes with a shallow basal depression. It is black to very dark brown all over, dry, and hard.
The peridium — the outer rind — carries the most useful macroscopic characters:
- Warts are large and coarse, typically 3–8 mm across at the base
- Each wart is pyramidal, with four to six flat polygonal faces meeting at a blunt or slightly pointed apex
- The wart faces are usually crossed by faint transverse striations visible with a hand lens
- The warts are not detachable — they are part of the rind, not loose scales
- There is no obvious stalk, no basal cavity of any size, and no persistent white mycelial felt
Run a thumbnail over the surface. It feels like coarse, sharply faceted gravel — noticeably rougher than the fine, close warts of the winter species.
Reading the Inside
Cut the truffle cleanly in half with a sharp blade; the interior is where the identification is confirmed. The fertile tissue, the gleba, in a mature Tuber aestivum is:
- Pale hazel, greyish-brown or biscuit — never black, never purple-black
- Firm and slightly crumbly, not gelatinous or powdery
- Marbled with abundant, branching white sterile veins that are narrow, numerous and run through the whole section like the venation of a leaf
- The white veins stay white when exposed to air; they do not redden or blacken
Immature specimens are much paler, almost whitish inside, with the veins less contrasted — a common source of confusion. Colour the gleba with maturity, not with a single specimen. The odour is strong and characteristic, and is a genuine field character even though it can never be the sole basis of a determination.
Spores Instead of a Spore Print
You cannot take a spore print from a truffle, and this is worth understanding rather than merely noting. Tuber is an ascomycete whose spores develop inside sac-like asci enclosed within the gleba, with no exposed hymenium and no mechanism for releasing spores into the air. Dispersal depends instead on soil animals locating and excavating the ascocarps and carrying the spores away through the ground, which is why the odour is so powerful.
To read the spores, scrape a tiny fragment of mature gleba onto a slide, squash it in water, and examine at 400×. Look for:
- Asci that are broadly ellipsoid to subglobose, usually short-stalked, containing one to four spores (occasionally five or six)
- Spores that are ellipsoid, yellow-brown to amber, 25–40 µm long, and ornamented with a reticulate, honeycomb-like network of raised ridges enclosing irregular polygonal alveoli
That reticulate ornamentation is the definitive microscopic character and separates Tuber aestivum immediately from species with spiny, isolated ornamentation.
Season and Ecology
Tuber aestivum is ectomycorrhizal, sheathing the fine roots of its hosts and exchanging soil nutrients for photosynthate. It requires alkaline, well-aerated, stony soils and is intolerant of waterlogging, which is why chalk downland woods, limestone escarpments and old calcareous hedge banks are its strongholds. Ascocarps mature from roughly May through to November, with the bulk in summer and early autumn; later-maturing collections with a darker gleba and a stronger odour are sometimes distinguished as Tuber uncinatum, which many treat as an autumn form of the same species.
Separating the Look-alikes
- Périgord Truffle (Tuber melanosporum) — warts are smaller and finer, the gleba is purplish-black to nearly black with fine white veins that redden then darken on exposure, spores are spiny, not netted, and maturity falls in winter.
- Winter Truffle (Tuber brumale) — small, low warts, grey-black gleba with coarse, sparse white veins, spiny spores, and a winter season.
- Bitter Truffle (Tuber mesentericum) — very similar warty exterior, but with a distinct basal cavity and an infolded gleba, plus a markedly different odour.
- Deer Truffles (Elaphomyces spp.) — roughly spherical, but with a thick, tough, cracked yellowish-brown rind and an interior that becomes a dry black powdery mass with no white marbling. Frequently host to the parasitic Elaphocordyceps club emerging above ground.
- Earthballs (Scleroderma spp.) — often half-emergent rather than fully buried, with a thick warty rind and an interior that turns from white to purplish-black and finally to dusty spore powder; no persistent veins.
- False Truffles (Rhizopogon spp.) — pale ochre to olive, soft, with cottony rhizomorphs on the surface, and a chambered rather than marbled interior; found under conifers on acid soil.
