Tawny Funnel

A rusty orange-brown funnel that fruits in dense crowded troops and rings in woodland litter, with very crowded decurrent gills that age to the cap colour.
Overview
The Tawny Funnel is a warm-coloured, gregarious woodland mushroom that carpets litter under conifers and broadleaves in late autumn, often in overlapping clusters or curved rows. Its rich rust to orange-brown colouring and very crowded gills give it a distinctive appearance among the mostly pale funnels.
The species has moved between genera repeatedly and can be found in the literature as Clitocybe flaccida, Lepista flaccida and Lepista inversa as well as under its current name Paralepista flaccida. The reason for the shuffling is microscopic: the spores are finely warted and roughened, like those of Lepista, rather than smooth like those of true Clitocybe, but the fruit body shape is classically clitocyboid.
Whether or not L. inversa is treated as a separate species is a long-running debate. Field material that is darker, more crowded-gilled and more clustered is often given the inversa name, but most modern treatments merge the two.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 4-9 cm across, convex at first, soon flat and then deeply funnel-shaped with a wavy, sometimes lobed margin. The surface is smooth, matt and hygrophanous, rich tawny orange, rust-brown or foxy red-brown when moist, drying to a paler ochre or leather colour, and old specimens often show darker watery blotches.
Gills
The gills are extremely crowded, narrow, thin and strongly decurrent. They start cream or pale buff and soon take on the tawny orange-brown colour of the cap. Their density is one of the best field characters: they are noticeably more crowded than in the Common Funnel.
Stipe
The stipe is 3-6 cm long and 6-12 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly widened at the base, tawny to pale orange-buff, fibrous and elastic. The base is densely matted with orange-tinted mycelium and bound leaf litter or needles. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, pale tawny and unchanging when cut, with a faint sweetish or slightly earthy smell. The spore print is pale cream to very pale buff, and the spores are minutely warted, which distinguishes the genus microscopically from Clitocybe.
Where and when it grows
The Tawny Funnel grows in leaf litter and needle duff in woodland of all kinds, showing a particular liking for spruce, pine and larch plantations as well as beech and mixed broadleaf woods. It is also found among bracken litter, in shelterbelts and along shaded woodland tracks.
Fruiting is late, running from mid-autumn into early winter and often continuing after most other agarics have gone. Fruit bodies typically appear in dense troops, tight clusters or long serpentine rows rather than singly, and the species is widespread and common in Europe, temperate Asia and North America.
Ecological role
Paralepista flaccida is a litter saprotroph that decomposes fallen needles, leaves and small woody fragments. Its mycelium forms an extensive orange-tinted mat that binds the duff layer, which is why lifting a fruit body usually brings a plate of matted litter with it.
The mycelium spreads outward year on year, producing arcs and partial rings, and it competes strongly with other litter fungi, sometimes dominating whole patches of plantation floor. Its very late fruiting suggests it tolerates lower soil temperatures than many co-occurring woodland agarics, extending its season into the first frosts.
Similar species
Infundibulicybe gibba, the Common Funnel, is paler pinkish-tan, has white gills that never take on the cap colour, is thinner-fleshed and grows scattered rather than clustered. Lepista nuda, Wood Blewit, shares the crowded gills and pale pink-cream spore print but is lilac to violet-tinged when fresh with a fleshy, streaked stipe and sinuate rather than deeply decurrent gills.
Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, the False Chanterelle, overlaps in colour and habitat but has soft, repeatedly forked orange gills, a suede-like cap, and a slimmer stipe. Tawny Lactarius species with funnel caps release milk when the gills are damaged, a feature never seen in Paralepista.
