A small orange-buff hedgehog fungus whose cap underside carries crowded brittle spines instead of gills. It is slimmer and distinctly warmer in colour than the common Wood Hedgehog.
Overview
The Terracotta Hedgehog is a compact member of Hydnum, the genus that gives the hedgehog fungi their name. Instead of gills or pores, the underside of the cap is packed with hundreds of soft, brittle, downward-pointing spines that shed easily when rubbed with a fingertip. That single character places any Hydnum immediately in the hydnoid group and separates it from the gilled mushrooms it otherwise resembles in stature.
Hydnum sits in the Cantharellales, the same order as chanterelles and the club-like Clavulina species. Despite looking like an ordinary capped-and-stalked mushroom, its closest relatives are the folded, gill-less chanterelles, and it shares their pale, brittle, slightly rubbery flesh and their habit of forming mycorrhizal partnerships with trees.
What makes this species distinctive within the genus is its colour and build: a warm terracotta to apricot-orange cap on a slender, usually central stalk, at a smaller scale than the pale buff Hydnum repandum. Modern work has shown that what was long called Hydnum rufescens is really a cluster of closely similar species across the Northern Hemisphere, so the name is best treated as covering a small group of orange-toned hedgehogs.
How to identify it
Cap
Typically 2-7 cm across, convex when young and soon flattening or becoming shallowly depressed at the centre. The surface is dry and finely suede-like, never slimy, and the colour is a warm apricot, orange-buff or terracotta, usually deeper than the cream-buff of the Wood Hedgehog. The margin is often irregular, wavy or lobed and stays slightly inrolled for a long time.
Spines
The fertile surface is a dense mat of slender, brittle, tapering spines 2-6 mm long, pale cream to pale salmon-buff, becoming a little more orange with age. They are crowded and easily broken off. In this species the spines usually stop at the top of the stalk or run only very slightly onto it, whereas H. repandum commonly has spines running noticeably down the stem.
Stipe
Slender, 3-7 cm tall and 0.5-1.5 cm thick, more or less cylindrical and usually attached centrally rather than off to one side. It is whitish to pale buff, dry and smooth, and often develops orange to brownish stains where handled or bruised.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white to pale cream, firm but brittle, snapping cleanly like a chanterelle rather than tearing fibrously, and it discolours slowly to orange-buff when cut. The spore print is white to pale cream; the spores are broadly ellipsoid to almost round, smooth and colourless.
Where and when it grows
This is a woodland species of mossy, often mildly acidic ground. It appears among moss, needle litter and leaf litter in coniferous woodland with spruce and pine, and also under beech, oak and birch in mixed and broadleaf woodland. It favours older, undisturbed stands and often reappears in the same patch of moss year after year, sometimes in arcs or loose troops rather than tight clusters.
Fruiting runs from late summer into late autumn, peaking after periods of steady rain. The species group is widespread across temperate and boreal Europe, is recorded across northern Asia, and orange-toned hedgehogs of this type occur widely in North America, though several of those populations are now recognised as separate species.
Ecological role
Like all Hydnum species this is an ectomycorrhizal fungus. Its mycelium sheathes the fine absorbing roots of its host trees, forming an interface where the fungus supplies water and mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen scavenged from thin forest soils, and receives sugars from the tree in return. It cannot be grown apart from a living partner, which is why fruiting bodies are always tied to standing woodland rather than dead wood.
Because the mycelium is long-lived and slow-spreading, colonies tend to persist for many years in the same square metres of moss, and the fungus is often treated as an indicator of stable, unfertilised woodland soils. The brittle spines shatter easily, releasing spores that are dispersed by air currents and by small animals moving through the litter layer.
Similar species
The main comparison is with the Wood Hedgehog (Hydnum repandum), which is larger and stouter, paler cream to pinkish-buff rather than orange, and typically has an off-centre stalk with spines running conspicuously down it. The Depressed Hedgehog (Hydnum umbilicatum) is closer in colour but has a narrower cap with a distinct navel-like pit at the centre and a notably slim, more evenly cylindrical stalk. Both share the same brittle white-spored flesh, so the separation rests on size, stalk position and cap profile.
At a glance an orange hedgehog can be mistaken for a chanterelle, but Cantharellus has blunt, forking, gill-like folds that cannot be rubbed off, not free-standing spines. Toothed fungi in Sarcodon and Hydnellum also carry spines, but they are far larger or tougher, brown-scaly or corky and concentrically zoned, and they drop a brown spore print rather than a white one.
